Michelin May Not Leave F1 After All

SpeedTV.com has reported that McLaren boss, Ron Dennis, has hinted that Michelin’s announced withdrawal from F1 might not be definitive. Dennis said that the French company might change its position and continue into 2007 for what is supposed to be the last season of tyre competition. “Bridgestone has opened discussions with the teams and us as well. But I think there’s also some indication that it may change. We are not at this stage focusing on next year’s tyre supply. At the moment we’re very comfortable that Michelin have done a very good job.

“Of course we’re looking at two Ferraris on the front row on Bridgestone, and it’s a little confusing to see the pace of the other teams on Bridgestone, so we don’t know where we are. But I think Michelin has done a very good job, and we’d love them to continue, and I don’t think that is beyond the realms of possibility,” Dennis is reported to have said.

UK Fulda Challenge Team ‘Best Ever’

The 2006 Fulda Challenge UK team is heading back to Britain after its best Arctic performance yet. Kate Balchin (26) and Martin Yardley (38) travelled to the breathtaking Yukon Territory at the end of January to take part in the annual extreme sports adventure. The UK team finished in fourth place, 30 points behind the winning team. Kate finished third overall in a field of world-class female athletes and was presented with a cheque for $1,000 (Canadian).

Belgium’s Liesbeth Buytart and Germany’s Martin Hollerbach were the top performing woman and man respectively and they received a cheque for $3,000 (Canadian) each. The final results meant that the German Lowa team won the 2006 Fulda Challenge after leading the event from start to finish. They were awarded a Klondike gold nugget each.

Victory For UK Fulda Challenge Team

The UK Fulda Challenge team pumped up its points total by winning two events. Kate Balchin won the mountain biking while Martin Yardley was victorious at car pulling. The UK team is currently fourth overall.

The tough 55km mountain bike course was been designed to test the competitors stamina and determination to the absolute limit. The freezing temperatures (-20°C) and extreme road conditions made the competition hard work for even the toughest of the 20 world-class competitors. Their challenge was made all the more arduous by oncoming vehicles creating complete white-outs for up to three seconds at a time.

The Challenge Begins

Today marks the beginning of the gruelling eight-day 2006 Fulda Challenge. For the UK team, Kate Balchin (from Bagshot in Surrey) and Martin Yardley (from Portsmouth), this means battling the elements in an extreme sports competition in Canada’s Yukon Territory.

The female Metropolitan Police Officer and the Royal Marine PTI travelled to Canada last Friday to begin preparations for the event. They will compete against nine other countries – including Germany, Belgium, Austria and Canada – to win two Klondike gold nuggets and the title of 2006 Fulda Challenge champions. The punishing schedule allows no break for the team as they compete in a wide range of sporting events in temperatures as low as –50ºC.

Titan Trades Land in Brownsville Suit Deal

(Akron/Tire Review) Tire and wheel maker Titan International Inc has settled a dispute with the City of Brownsville, Texas, home of its now closed tyre plant, agreeing to give the city 73.5 acres of land. The agreement ends a two-year lawsuit filed by Brownsville in the wake of Titan’s sudden closing of the plant in 2003.

Michelin to Leave Formula One After 2006

Michelin is to end its Formula One involvement after the 2006 season, the French manufacturer has reported. Explaining its decision, Michelin said it would not supply a single supplier Formula 1 series and was not happy with F1’s new direction, but did not rule out rejoining the series, if the rules were modified.

For many motorsport observers this is a somewhat understated way of describing the rift that has emerged between the manufacturer and the sport’s governing bodies. The manufacturer also complained of “constant changes to racing regulations without warning.” Following a disastrous US Grand Prix, and public disagreements with the FIA chief, Max Mosely, Michelin have obvious decided to leave the Formula 1 circus to the only other act on the scene – Bridgestone.

Hankook Announces Autosport International Plans

Hankook is set to unveil a raft of motorsport plans at Autosport International in January, building on its successful rallying programme this year. Motorsport manager Mike Patterson said the company, which has its UK headquarters in Daventry, is currently finalising plans to support both race and rally programmes for 2006.

Hayes Lemmerz 3Q Sales Up 11 per cent

Hayes Lemmerz International, Inc today reported that sales for the fiscal third quarter ended 31 October 2005, rose 11 per cent to $604.0 million from $545.9 million for the same period last year. However Hayes Lemmerz reported net losses of $13.3 million, compared with $5.3 million in the same period last year, and issued revised guidance for 2005.

Disqualification Gives Pirelli Victory in Bahrain

In the final FIA GT Championship event, held at Sakhir, Bahrain, in late November, the Ferrari 550 Maranello driven by Gabriele Gardel has been excluded from the final results because the vehicle did not contain the required minimum of three litres of fuel in its tank at the end of the race.

The disqualification (which is being appealed) cancels the points earned by Gardel, so that the FIA GT Drivers’ Championship goes to Michael Bartels and Timo Scheider in the Pirelli P Zero Racing-shod Maserati MC12 of the Vitaphone Racing Team.
