From Cats’ Paws to Elephant Legs

Continental reports that it is constantly seeking to improve tread pattern design on both passenger tyres and truck tyre products. What you may not know is that many of their new developments are based on a bionic approach. Don’t worry this doesn’t have anything to do with the $6 million dollar man – instead it is all about applying the “perfect methods and systems found in nature…to modern technology.” The design of the ContiPremiumContact, for example, is based on the principle of the cat’s paw. It has a narrow contour when rolling, and a wider contour when braking which is said to give it better grip on the road.

Toyo Announces Increases Sales and Profits in 1H 2006

Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. has announced first half 2006 financial results that show increases in both sales and profits, particularly with regards to net income. Compared with the same period of fiscal 2005, net sales increased to 145.7 billion yen (up 3.1% to £651 million), operating income increased to 5,931 million yen (up 8.7% to £26.4 million), ordinary income decreased to 4,404 million yen (down 22.6% to £19.67 million), and net income for the interim period increased to 8,596 million yen (up 292.4% to £38.4 million). While the net sales for the half year hit a new high for the second straight year, the net income was the highest ever for interim earnings, bolstered by extraordinary income from the sale of the shopping centre leasing business operated in Itami City.

IQv Series Cordless Impact Wrench

Up to now, says Ingersoll Rand, the power and reliability of cordless impact wrenches did not quite live up to users’ expectations. However, the company says that its new IQv range provides an ideal solution by featuring reverse torque levels of up to 500 Nm and a durability 3 times longer than the competition. The IQv series is also the most compact and the lightest available, adds Ingersoll Rand.

Amtel-Vredestein Wins Branding Award

Amtel-Vredestein has won the EFFIE/Best Brand silver medal in the automotive category for its Vredestein brand promotion marketing project. Of 300 leading companies competing in 30 different categories, Amtel-Vredestein was the only tyre manufacturer to take a prize. The awards ceremony took place at the Forum Hall complex on 26 October. The EFFIE awards organisers describe the accolade as the most prestigious advertising and marketing award.

Matador Middleton is just Champion

Llandrindod Wells-based Craig Middleton produced a polished performance to take third place on the final round of the MSA National Gravel Rally Championship. More importantly, on the Bulldog Rally Middleton has done enough to secure his first major championship title alongside his three National Junior titles.

Michelin Happy With New MotoGP Rules

New regulations aimed at maintaining competition between tyre manufacturers in the MotoGP World Championship have received the backing of Michelin. The rules, concerning tyres and testing, come into effect on January 1 2007 and the tyre regulations were formulated following discussions among the three tyre manufacturers involved in MotoGP.

Alcoa Wheel Products is a finalist in the 2007 Automotive News PACE Award competition. The 13th annual PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers’ Contribution to Excellence) Award is presented by Microsoft, SAP, Transportation Research Center Inc. (TRC Inc.) and Automotive News.

Bridgestone Firestone Begins Dayton Plant Closure Programme

Back in April, Bridgestone Firestone North America gave notice that the Dayton plant in Oklahoma City would be closed down by the end of the year. The first tranche of layoffs has begun, with around 400 of the 1,400-strong workforce being told that they will lose their jobs by the end of this month.

MAHA Commits to Aftermarket Show

Maha, a world-leader in the garage equipment sector, has confirmed it is set to use January’s Aftermarket Show as a platform for showcasing the latest product in its Dynamometer range. The event will be held at the NEC in Birmingham from 11-14 January. The company, specialists in the manufacture and supply of Brake Testing Equipment, Vehicle Lifts, and Chassis Dynamometers, is returning to the show after enjoying considerable success at the event earlier this year.

F1 Experience For T&A Competition Winner, Courtesy Of Firestone

A car enthusiast enjoyed a unique taste of life in the fast lane, after taking an exclusive tour of the Williams F1 factory as a guest of Bridgestone. Robert Newton was given open access to the F1 team’s state-of-the-art Grove head office as the winner of a Tyres & Accessories competition to promote the Firestone brand. The trip enabled him to indulge his passion for fast cars and pick up some useful tips for one of his hobbies-cum-business ventures – building rally cars.

Kwik-Fit Fleet Wins Pendragon Deal

Kwik-Fit Fleet has won a two-year sole supply contract with Pendragon Group to supply fast-fit and tyre management services to the three contract hire and fleet management companies within the organisation. The new deal, which Kwik-Fit Fleet won after fighting off competition in a competitive tender, means Britain’s largest independent fast-fit company will supply services to the 25,178 vehicles operated by Pendragon Contracts, Bramall Contracts and Vardy Contract Motoring.

Performance Fibers to Idle Tyre Fibre Production in Alabama

(Akron/Tire Review) The downturn in the North American tyre industry has begun taking its toll on suppliers. Performance Fibers, a leading supplier of polyester fibres for tyres, is idling its polyester fibre production at its Scottsboro, Alabama, facility. The company said the move was “due to slowing demand in North America caused by U.S. tyre manufacturing cutbacks, high raw material costs and other factors.”

Having counted all the entries, checked all the answers and contacted the winners, Tyres & Accessories is pleased to announce that Mike Garwood of National Tyres and Autocare and James E Gilmore of Cooper Tires have each won the star prize.

T&A visited Mike Garwood at National’s Stockport office to present the prize. Garwood, who currently works as a project manager for the well known retail chain, is celebrated 30 years in the tyre business in September, so the prize could not have come at a better time.

Cooper Kenda JV Making Progress in China

Seven months after officially starting the project construction workers building Cooper/Kenda’s joint venture manufacturing plant have almost finished. The 800,000-square-foot manufacturing facility is situated in an industrial park in Kunshan, a suburb west of Shanghai. This first phase of the project is expected to be completed by December.
