Spoiled for Choice

Here in the UK buying a new set of alloys for your car is a much different experience than in many countries. A trip to the local tyre shop won’t usually result in a satisfied customer rolling home on the wheels of their dreams – very few tyre specialists also deal in alloy wheels, and those that do mostly have a limited range on offer. This means that the bulk of alloy wheel purchases in the UK are made through dedicated wheel suppliers, and these days that equates to two options – in person shopping or ordering online.

Larger stores, such as the deceptively named South West Tyres (they do sell tyres, but the company’s specialty is definitely their large range of alloy wheels), offer the advantage of having a wide selection of both leading brands and budget alloys on hand, so little is left to the customer’s imagination. And with in-store fitting bays, such as at South West Tyres’ 10,000 sq. ft. premises, wheels can be selected, purchased and fitted all in a single convenient procedure.

Michelin Introduces Endurance Competition

(Akron/Tire Review) Groupe Michelin has created a new endurance race based on the 2007 Le Mans 24 Hours and the six rounds of the 2007 Le Mans Series – the Michelin Energy Endurance Challenge.

As part of the competition, Michelin will reward those teams that make the best use of fuel using an Energy Performance Index (EPI) calculated after each event. Prizes will be awarded to the best-performing teams in all four categories (LM P1, LM P2, GT1, GT2).

The EPI will consider each vehicle’s average speed, weight and actual fuel consumed.

Accuride Takes Weight Out

(Akron/Tire Review) Accuride Corp. rolled out its new Accu-Lite line of steel wheels at the Mid America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky.

According to the company, Accu-Lite wheels weigh in eight pounds less than standard steel wheels, and “are the lightest available version of the industry-standard two and five hand hole 22.5×8.25-inch steel wheels. Accuride’s standard five hand hole steel wheels weigh 68 pounds, the company said.

“As new emission standards are resulting in weight being added to vehicles, we knew our customers needed an easy solution for counterbalancing the added weight,” said Larry Taylor, Accuride senior vice president of sales and marketing. “We designed Accu-Lite wheels as a weight reduction solution for our customers so that they could maximise payload and fuel savings without reducing load ratings.

Vogue Tyre Launches Redesigned Site

(Akron/Tire Review) Vogue Tyre has redesigned its Website – www.voguetyre.com – to give consumers and retailers enhanced access to tyre, wheel and accessory product information and to locate a nearby Vogue dealer.

“This new Web site represents the culmination of months of work and discussions with our customers, our dealers and automotive enthusiasts around the country,” said Doug Dodson, Vogue’s vice chairman. “These days anybody can build a Website just like anyone can purchase a set of tyres. What sets this Web site apart from others is the same thing that sets our products apart from the competition: style and function.”

Winner of Michelin Motorcycle Competition

A Mansfield man has won a BMW motorcycle in a competition run by Stoke-on-Trent based tyre company, Michelin. Mark Wagstaff, a self-employed HGV driver, entered the competition to win the Michelin shod BMW F800S worth £5,995 at a Motor Cycle News event in Skegness and was randomly picked from around 17,000 entries. The competition also ran in a number of motorcycle magazines.

Diesel Power enters the Dunlop BTCC

Dunlop has announced that a diesel-powered car will be competing in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship for the first time in the championship’s 49-year history. BMW club series champion Rick Kerry indicates that he plans to enter a turbocharged BMW 1 Series acquired from BMW Motorsport in Germany.

Federal Tyres Supports new Lotus Race Series.

Taiwan’s Federal Tyres have been named sponsor and official tyre supplier to the Australia 2007 X Challenge one make series for Lotus cars. Federal Corporation’s CEO, Jamie Ma, announced that the competition’s debut series would be also backed by Federal Tyres, and all competing vehicles will run on Federal’s new 595RS X Challenge Special Edition Tyres.

Alcoa Launches New Lines for LT Wheel Market

(Akron/Tire Review) Alcoa Forged Specialty Wheels has expanded its off-road light truck wheel line with the addition of the Pro Series and Adventure Series lines. Forged from one-piece 6061-T6 aluminum, both Pro Series and Adventure Series wheels are now available for most ½-ton trucks, full size SUVs and Jeeps. A variety of 17- to 20-inch sizes, with polished clearcoat and chrome finish options, are available.

Completely Different – Michelin MotoGP Tyre

Gauloises Yamaha MotoGP rider Colin Edwards has given Michelin’s new 16- inch front tyre a definite thumbs up during pre-championship simulation races in Sepang. The smaller diameter front tyre is designed to provide greater stability during braking and cornering for the new generation of 800cc machines being introduced into the MotoGP competition.

Pirelli Chosen as BRC Control Tyre

Pirelli has been selected as the control tyre for the Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship (BRC). A three-year agreement between Pirelli Tyres and the BRC will lead to, in the view of the BRC, a more equal competition in which the driver’s talent and ability can be showcased during the six-round championship. The decision to switch to a single tyre supplier comes after a control fuel was successfully introduced at the start of the 2006 season.

Essex Man Wins Marangoni-Shod MGF

David Johnson of Essex proved to be the lucky winner of the Marangoni Tyre-sponsored MG Enthusiast Magazine prize MGF. The prize was drawn at the recent NEC Classic Motor Show and the resplendent MGF was handed over at the beginning of December, a very special early Christmas present!

The competition, which ran over a six-month duration during the summer of 2006 in MG Enthusiast and at various events including the Classic Motor Show, attracted thousands of entries. The prize MGF had been restored to perfection over a six-month period by a group of specialist companies. Marangoni supplied a set of Ultra High Performance Zeta Linea tyres for the prize vehicle.

The Marangoni involvement, coordinated by Midlands marketing consultancy Torqback Ltd, was the result of a unique partnership with publisher Octane Media Ltd, parent company of MG Enthusiast Magazine, the joint venture being planned by Octane Media Managing Director Geoff Love, Managing Editor David Lillywhite and Derek Carruthers, Marangoni (Car Tyre Division) Global Sales & Marketing Director.

“We have been delighted by the response to our participation at the Classic Motor Show with Octane Media and being able to communicate the Marangoni story to an informed and discerning audience. We were more than happy to supply the Zeta Linea tyres for the MG Enthusiast project MGF, which highlights their suitability for this hugely popular sports car. Our NEC involvement has certainly proved a very successful and rewarding partnership and has provided an ideal platform for building Marangoni brand awareness in the Classic Car market segment,” said Derek Carruthers.

Ling Industrial Services Buys New Shredder

North Yorkshire company Riverside Waste Machinery, a major national player in the provision of equipment to tackle industrial waste in an environmentally friendly manner, recently supplied a second tyre shredder to Ling Industrial Services, the Kent-based specialists in demolition and waste management which helps dispose of a “good proportion” of the 40-million waste tyres generated each year across the UK.

Parker Hannifin Supplies Nitrogen to BMW Team

Parker Hannifin has supplied its TyreSaver nitrogen generator technology to Nexa Racing, the Formula BMW UK Champions. According to the company, the TyreSaver units are enabling the team to fill their tyres with nitrogen efficiently within particularly demanding timescales, significantly improving their control over their performance on the race track. The Nexa team entered the Formula BMW UK Championship in 2005, going on to win the competition last year.
