Goodyear’s Search for Innovative Farmers Continues

In June Goodyear announced its search for the UK’s most innovative farmer, offering the prize of £3500 worth of Goodyear Optitrac farm tyres and the Farming Innovation Award 2008 at October’s British Ploughing Championships. With the deadline rushing ever closer, Goodyear reports the search is hotting up, and says great interest has been expressed in the campaign. Farmers from across the UK have entered the competition, impressing Goodyear with their innovative thinking.

“The competition has launched to a great start and we have had numerous entries already,” comments Goodyear communications specialist Kate Rock. “Farmers are telling us about their eco friendly initiatives, including the use of solar energy, compost conversions and the reduction of carbon emissions. All of the entries we have had so far are top contenders but there is still time to submit an innovation and win the competition!”

Win Online with Yokohama

Yokohama HPT says it is ‘win-time’, with the UK distributor for the Japanese performance tyre brand holding a series of competitions through its yokohama.co.uk website. Winners will have the chance to visit the UK round of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, a series for which Yokohama supplies its flagship Advan products as control tyre. Furthermore, contestants visiting the site can pit their skills against ‘drivers’ from across Europe to win a Speed Racer Go!!! slot car racing set and a set of Yokohama tyres.

The 2008 racing season is the third of four in which the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) runs on Yokohama control tyres, and Yokohama comment that the ADVAN A005 and A006 dry slick and wet-weather tyres have drawn critical acclaim from the drivers and teams alike, praised for their grip, performance and consistency in the widely varying conditions that make up the championship.

Pirelli to Continue Supplying Tyres for Superbike Championship

Following recent negotiations, FGSport, the planners behind the FIM Superbike World Championship, has signed an agreement with Pirelli to provide the tyres for the competition, as well as the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup and the UEM Supersport 600 European Championship, until 2012. Pirelli is the current supplier for all of these events, and the new contract will extend the run beyond the end of the season, where the current deal would have ended.

According to FGSport, the deal is reflective of the excellence shown by the Italian manufacturer over the past three years, in which no tyre has caused any incidents or recorded any breakages showing optimal reliability. Additionally, Pirelli’s ability to offer strong service and support made competitive bids difficult.

Pirelli Carlisle Cuts 60 Manufacturing Jobs

Pirelli’s Carlisle factory, which employs 1,000 workers, is set to cut back 60 jobs from the firm’s operation due to foreign competition and lost orders, say local news sources. The redundancies are to come into effect in the autumn of this year.

Pirelli’s spokesmen have told news sources that the cuts are necessary to ensure the future survival of the large facility. They also stressed that there are no current plans to move out of the factory and that the company is pursuing an ongoing investment plan bringing machine upgrades and increased production capacity to the plant. Talks with the trade union over the redundancies are underway, though union officials declined to comment on news of the job losses.

Indian Tyre Industry Faces Price Fixing Probe

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has suggested that there may be an issue of price fixing within the Indian tyre industry.

According to a study carried out at the Jawaharlal Nehru University and commissioned by the CCI, certain companies have enjoyed similar sales realisation with “widely differing profit rates.”

MAM Software is introducing new software to help workshops manage their business effectively. Deployed as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Autowork Online will be accessed online via an Internet browser – so there’s no software to install, manage, or update.

Following-on from MAM’s popular Autowork application, Autowork Online will offer functionality for managing all core workshop activities including creating job cards and invoices, managing work diaries and maintaining accurate service records. Furthermore, it will provide a range of web-driven features including vehicle registration mark (VRM) lookup, Autocat+ parts cataloguing, repair times, technical data and online parts ordering.

Pirelli Name-checked on Ferrari Game

Pirelli has been given a name-check, as the virtual-competition sponsor in the title of the new racing game, Ferrari Challenge: Trofeo Pirelli. The Italian tyre manufacturer features in-game, with its tyres expertly modelled in similar detail to the lovingly-rendered cars.

The game, which has received its UK release, has garnered mostly positive reviews and is released on Playstation 3 and 2 platforms, in addition to Nintendo’s Wii and DS.

Snap-On Signs 3-Year Aston Martin Sponsorship Deal

Snap-on Tools has announced a three-year sponsorship deal with Aston Martin Racing, which recently won the GT1 class at the recent Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race. The 009 Aston Martin Racing DBR9, driven by David Brabham, Antonio Garcia and Darren Turner – resplendent in its iconic Gulf livery (pictured) – took the Le Mans specialist class victory for sports cars which are based closely on their road-going equivalents. This was the second consecutive victory for Aston Martin Racing in the GT1 Class.

“We were delighted to have been able to announce just before Le Mans our three year partnership with Aston Martin Racing,” says Terry Barcham, Managing Director of Snap-on Tools. “Aston Martin Racing’s exhilarating success at this year’s Le Mans gave us particular pleasure. Federal Sponsors Top Drift Cup 2008 for Third Year

Federal has secured its sponsorship of this year’s Top Drift competition, giving its name to the trophy. The Federal Cup is one of drift racing’s premier contests, and is held on the West Coast of the USA. This is the third consecutive year in which Federal is the contest’s key sponsor, and the company has entered into the spirit of the exciting contest, in which drivers are judged on their ability to handle high-speed, long-distance slides around the racetrack.

Round Three of the Championship will take place towards the end of September and represents the beginning of the back straight of the contest in which Federal’s US dealer City Tires continues to service 13 of the 16 top drivers.

I hurtled through a range of negative emotions after watching ABC’s “20/20” assault on the tire industry. After turning the whole thing over in my mind countless times, I finally came to the conclusion that it didn’t really matter.

They were right. 100% right.

ABC’s 10-minute primetime pasting of tire retailers and manufacturers selling so-called “old tires” was dead nuts on.

New First Stop Fantasy Football League

Bridgestone’s First Stop network of independent tyre dealerships is launching its very own Fantasy Football league. The game will allow individuals and garages across the network to compete in a dedicated league to find the best Fantasy team. First Stop stores across the UK will, from mid July, be able to plan and prepare their teams ahead of the start of the Premiership season on Saturday 16 August.

Dunlop Showcases Its Race-to-Road Technology

In touring car racing, Dunlop is the tyre supplier of choice in the German DTM, Australian V8 Supercars and the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship. Goodyear Refunds Customers After “Unsubstantiated” Claims

Goodyear Tyres has issued an apology and offered refunds to Australian customers who purchased the company’s Eagle LS2000 range, following the manufacturer’s unsubstantiated claims about the tyres’ environmental friendliness. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission had investigated and found misleading or deceptive the company’s claims that the range was “environmentally friendly”, had “minimal environmental impact”, could “improve fuel economy” and that its production process resulted in “reduced carbon dioxide emissions.

Three Jailed Over Marine Hose Industry Cartel

Three men have been imprisoned for rigging bids, fixing prices, restricting supplies and allocating customers within the global marine hose industry following prosecution by the Office of Fair Trading in Britain. This is the first case of its kind since the implementation of a law in 2002, which gave the consumer watchdog the ability to crack down on cartel activities.

The UK-based trio, Peter Whittle, David Brammar and Bryan Allison were sentenced to jail time of up to three years after pleading guilty. The men had already been successfully prosecuted in Texas, but the British stretch will serve towards the 20 to 30 months they were handed by the US court. After sentencing, the OFT named Dunlop Oil and Marine Ltd, Bridgestone Corp, Yokohama Rubber Co Ltd, Parker ITR S.r.l., Manuli Rubber Industries SPA and Trelleborg Industrie SA as the businesses involved in the cartel. An investigation into these companies’ activities, conducted by the European Commission, is ongoing.
