Hankook to Sponsor Scottish Rally Championship

Next year the MSA Scottish Rally Championship will gain the backing of Hankook Tire – and the manufacturer is apparently already considering extending the sponsorship deal further. Hankook replaces the County Saab motor group, following five years’ involvement, as the championship’s main sponsor.

“We are delighted to be focusing our attention in 2009 on the Scottish Rally Championship,” said Hankook motorsport manager Mike Patterson. “The series attracts some intense competition and the enthusiasm and professionalism of the organising team has been instrumental in finalising this deal.”

Just Motorcycles Wins Bike Tyrestore Christmas Hamper

Christmas may be even a touch more fun this year, at Just Motorcycles in Basingstoke, now that they have won a luxury Christmas hamper packed by Royal grocers, Fortnum and Mason of London. ust Motorcycles was one of hundreds of customers who replied to the annual customer survey by two-wheel tyre wholesaler Bike Tyrestore and fortunately for them was the first to be drawn when the survey competition closed on 30 November.

BTS managing director, Peter Smith, told Tyres & Accessories: “Uniformly high scores were given to all aspects of the company’s service and customer support package. Reading each reply personally gives…a great handle on how customers rate the trading experience with Bike Tyrestore.”

Director Doug Snaps Up Photography Prize

Doug Wyatt, director of Airway Tyres, was recently crowned East of England runner up in the prestigious nationwide ‘Postcards from the Park’ photography competition, run by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Big Lottery Fund and GreenSpace. The competition encouraged people to capture what they love about their local park.

Bridgestone Leads Look at NHL’s Best Captains

Bridgestone Americas has kicked off a couple of promotions to support the Bridgestone brand role as the official tyre of the NHL. The Bridgestone Greatest NHL Captains promotion allows hockey fans to visit NHL.com and select the greatest NHL captains for each of the past four decades. The Nov. 11 to Dec. 21 effort will also present captains programming and content via the NHL Network and NHL.com.

The promotion will culminate with the greatest captains of each decade being announced in a special tribute during the NHL SuperSkills competition on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the Bell Centre in Montreal during the NHL All-Star Weekend. In cooperation with the NHL Network and NHL.com, a 20-part original series “Captains Driven By Bridgestone” will be broadcast on the NHL Network from November 2008 through April 2009. Each show will include a feature on one NHL Captain through exclusive interviews and profiles. (Tire Review/Akron)

Question of the Month Update

Initial responses to the Tyrepress.com question of the month suggest that industry professionals believe that motorsport series should consider the benefits of having more than one tyre supplier. So far, almost half of readers supported manufacturer competition, with only around 25 per cent of responses standing up for the lone tyre supplier. Other readers trod a more balanced path; one suggests that “Tyres are capable of creating an uneven playing surface… in the premier divisions of motorsport there is a need to ensure that as much can be delivered in driver capability and vehicle innovation. In the lower levels of clubman championships a good mixture of tyres is healthy for the sport.”

Daly Name Racing Again on Avon Tyres

The Formula Ford Festival in October 2008 saw the return of the Daly name on Avon Tyres. Conor Daly, son of Former Formula 1 driver Derek Daly, performed well for Team USA at the festival – trousering a sixth-place finish – more than 25 years after his father raced on Avon rubber in Formula 1.

Derek Daly was born in Ireland and competed in F1 for teams including Hesketh, Williams and Tyrrell in the late 1970s and early 80s and now lives in the USA. There his son won the Skip Barber National Championship and a drive with Team USA in the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch.

Bandvulc Tyre Contracts to Manage Sainsbury’s Tyres

Sainsbury’s has awarded its tyre management contract to Bandvulc Tyre Contracts, the tyre management division of the Bandvulc Group. Before the announcement, the Devon-based retreading company was already responsible for tyres belonging to the top three UK supermarkets. The latest three-year agreement sees BTC manage every aspect of Sainsbury’s Logistics tyre operation.

The contract will use Bandvulc’s range of drive axle and trailer patterns together with Continental front steer tyres. In addition, BTC’s network utilises some of the Continental Network Partners (CNPs) and therefore is probably the most flexible offer in the UK today enabling solutions to be delivered even in the most difficult areas.

“UK Car Dealer Numbers Will Decline” – Analysts

There will be significantly fewer car retailers operating in the UK in the years to come, as a result of vehicle manufacturers tightening control over dealership standards, according to analysts PricewaterhouseCoopers. Chris Kent, a director in the automotive team at PricewaterhouseCoopers, will be presenting at the forthcoming EurotaxGlass’s conference entitled ‘Driving Business – opportunities for profit and growth in an uncertain market’.

Speaking ahead of the event, he said that many more dealers are expected to follow those that have already closed their doors this year. The theme will be explored in greater detail at the event, being staged on 13 November at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.

Bridgestone Presents Safety Award at Paris Motor Show

For the third consecutive year, Bridgestone has sponsored the “Best Safety Innovation” prize in the international competition for automotive design students organised by Interior Motives magazine. The award was presented by Benoit Raulin, managing director Bridgestone France, at the Interior Motives Design Awards 2008 ceremony, held during the Paris Motor Show.

The audience of leading motor industry professionals attending the motor show saw the safety award and cash prize presented to French student Pierre Sabas for his design of a futuristic protective shell that wraps around each occupant of the vehicle and protective side panels integrated in the roll bars. This imaginative concept also won him the top Interior Motives Student Designer of the Year award.

MotoGP Riders Express Support for One Tyre Rule

Bridgestone, the only tyre manufacturer to submit a tyre supply proposal for the 2009 MotoGP season, has been all but officially confirmed as the official supplier in next year’s single tyre competition. This is a development that has reportedly been generally well received by the majority of riders in the top racing category.

Hankook Renews Jones Link for Swiss IRC Event

Hankook has renewed its links with leading rally driver Stuart Jones for the final round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge in Switzerland – the Rallye International du Valais – in October. The manufacturer has been working with Jones and his family business, SJR Motorsport since the driver’s British Rally Championship days, and Hankook motorsport manager, Mike Patterson declared himself, “delighted to be renewing our partnership for such an exciting event.’’

“We have been developing tyres specifically for the S2000 cars and Valais will provide the perfect opportunity to test these in some tricky conditions and against some of the best rally competition around.’’ The Hankook MG Super 2000 will be in action at the three-day event, which gets underway on Thursday October 23 from the rally’s base in Martigny. The crews will tackle more than 260 km of competitive stage miles.

The Slowest Race in Town Visits Michelin

Michelin invited participants in this year’s MPG Marathon to “Fill up With Air” at a specially prepared pit-stop at the company’s Campbell Road UK headquarters. This year 39 cars and 9 vans are taking part in what must be the only race where going slow helps you win. The two-day event sees the whole spectrum of car and light commercial vehicles follow a 411 mile course with one simple object – use as little fuel as possible.

Drivers come from a range of backgrounds including: fleet companies, the motor industry and the media. According to company representatives, roughly a third of cars were sporting Michelin tyres a fact that the company hopes will help communicate the message that good tyres and the right tyre pressures have a great impact on fuel economy.

To this end Team Michelin has entered two cars of its own into the competition. Tyres & Accessories witnessed the arrival, second from last, of the company’s Peugeot 308 entrant. Fitted with 195/65 R15 Michelin Energy Saver tyres, the team Michelin car was said to be doing well. The results won’t be released until tomorrow, however, Michelin’s Pegeot 308 was achieving fuel consumption of roughly 78 miles-per-gallon when it reached Stoke (12 mpg better than what the car’s handbook quotes for a combined cycle).

At the other end of the spectrum, the Corvette Z06 Coupe T&A saw roll into the Campbell Road car park was hypermiling its way to a normal level of fuel consumption. With a handbook mpg of 19.2 miles per gallon, the drivers of this 7-litres 505 BHP V8 managed to squeeze 26.9 mpg at the Stoke pit-stop.

Michelin also unveiled its new “Fill Up With Air” van, which has been purchased in preparation for the company’s 2009 pressure-check campaign.

Michelin Not Bidding for MotoGP Tyre Supply Contract

Despite stating on September 28 it “notes with interest” the switch to a single tyre supplier for the 2009 MotoGP World Championship, Michelin has decided not to submit a bid to the championship’s governing body. Upon announcing this decision on October 4, the company added that it “regrets not being able to contribute to the organisers’ important discussions to improve rider safety and reduce costs.

Pirelli Tyres “a real step up” for Endurance Series

Saturday 20 September saw the conclusion of this year’s Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series at the Miller Motorsports Park in Utah; a finale that also witnessed the curtain drop on Pirelli’s first-year performance as tyre supplier for the series. The performance – according to participants – has been ovation-worthy.

The winning team – the No. 6 Michael Shank Racing Ford Riley driven by Raphael Matos, John Pew and Ian James – was particularly won over by the P Zero. James commented, “This year when we got the Pirelli it was a real step up in the competition. The consistency has been great and I think you have seen that in the racing. The racing has been great; the Pirellis always give the driver a good stint. The tyres have really added to the series.”
