Dealers team up with schools in Bridgestone and McConechy’s art contest

Bridgestone and McConechy’s tyre dealerships are running “Re-inventing the Wheel” drawing competition in schools across Scotland. Pupils from schools in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Kirkcaldy are drawing their ideas of how they could reuse tyres from their family cars after they are no longer road safe. Each of the four schools: Sighthill Primary, Giffnock Primary, Merkinch Primary and Torbain Primary are paired with a local McConechy’s dealership.

Michelin announces 2012 additions to motorcycle track portfolio

Next year, Michelin will introduce three new track-oriented motorcycle tyre ranges: The Power Cup, a replacement for the Power One Competition, and the Power Slick and Power Rain to replace the company’s current slick and rain line-ups.

HiQ announces grid girl finalists

It’s said to have required “much deliberating, cogitating and digesting,” yet the shortlist for HiQ's national grid girl competition is now ready. The fast fitter says this year’s competition received an overwhelming response from grid girl wannabes all over the UK. According to HiQ marketing manager Geraldine McGovern, the company was “overwhelmed with entries and it was a tough decision shortlisting the final ten.”

Marangoni shod Hill Climb European champions

Marangoni tyres helped Simone Faggioli rout the field at Ilirska Bistrica in Slovenia to record the best time in both heats of the race, winning the FIA Hill Climb European Championship with one race still remaining. Faggioli drove his Osella FA30-Zytek with Marangoni Zeta Linea racing tyres to a fourth championship victory, making him one of the legends of the sport. Marangoni said Faggioli’s victory and domination of hill climb races over recent years is “confirmation of the exceptional work done by the engineers and technicians at the Italian company’s research & development department”.

‘Surprise’ at Goodyear performance – Morgan Stanley

Analysts at Morgan Stanley have reported their “surprise” at Goodyear’s performance in the second quarter of the financial year. The reason they gave for being caught unaware by the US tyre maker’s 24 per cent increase in sales (to US$5.6 billion) and 66.7 per cent rise in net profit (to $40 million) is that “it came in a quarter of weak shipments and rising raw material headwinds.” Despite unit demand being slightly down, Goodyear’s price/mix of $552 million “comfortably beat” Morgan Stanley’s estimate of $450 million and segment operating income for its North American Tire business was $137 million with a margin of 5.7 per cent, which Morgan Stanley notes is the highest level in a decade and in line with the company’s medium-term target.

Snap-on sponsors vocational training event

Snap-on has announced that it will sponsor WorldSkills London 2011, a world-leading vocational training event to be held at the ExCel centre in London from 5-8 October. Chris Behan, Snap-on Equipment’s general manager, comments: “We’re pleased to be supporting Snap-on’s sponsorship of WorldSkills London 2011, which will give contestants from across the globe the chance to put their skills to the test on the latest wheel alignment equipment. Bridgestone rubber helps decrease Brno MotoGP race time as Stoner wins

Casey Stoner clinched his sixth victory at Brno on Sunday following an early battle with teammate Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo. Pedrosa crashed out of the lead on the third lap, leaving the remaining two steps of the podium to be fought over by Andrea Dovizioso, who finished second, and Marco Simoncelli who secured his first podium in the premier class. Every rider on the grid used the softer option rear tyre for the race, and almost all riders used the harder option front. The only riders who didn’t were Suzuki’s Álvaro Bautista, who was chasing down Valentino Rossi for sixth position when he crashed out, and Lorenzo, who led early on before crossing the finish line fourth ahead of his Yamaha teammate Ben Spies.

Market development lobby push for rejuvenation of steel wheels

On 2 August the Steel Market Development Institute’s (SMDI) Wheels Task Force announced plans to begin a lightweight high-strength steel wheel development project, with a “cost-effective design and manufacturing” process. As well as developing the next generation of steel wheel products, it appears that the group also wants to rejuvenate the OE steel wheel market that has faced strong competition from cast and forged aluminium alternatives in recent years. Project results are expected in the Autumn.

Conti unveils ‘most innovative’ North American market 4×4 tyre

Continental Tire the Americas has introduced what it calls its “most innovative SUV, crossover and light truck tyre to date,” the CrossContact LX20. Priorities when developing this all-season tyre were fuel economy and tread wear improvements along with competition-beating wet braking. In respect to this last-mentioned quality, Continental says that in an independent wet braking test the CrossContact LX20 in size 265/70R17 stopped 34 feet shorter than its leading competitor, Pirelli’s Scorpion STR A P265/70R17 113H.

Treadsetters launches Torque truck tyre range

Telford based tyre wholesaler, Treadsetters recently expanded its product portfolio with the introduction of its own truck tyre private brand called “Torque.” This latest addition to Treadsetters’ extensive truck range is designed to complement the already established Hifly range, which is pitched as a 'value for money' tyre along with the Insa Turbo range of retreaded tyres.

EC clears Evonik carbon black acquisition

The European Commission has cleared the proposed acquisition of German chemical company Evonik’s carbon black business under the EU Merger Regulation. This approval under the EU Merger Regulation means that the business’ purchase by US based firm Rhône Capital and Jersey’s Triton is not considered one that will significantly alter the structure of the carbon black market or significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA); the Commission reached this decision as neither firm has any existing ownership interests in any business that manufactures or sells carbon black.

Australian Consumer magazine recommends Nexen CP661

Australian consumer test magazine “Choice” recently recommended the Nexen CP661 summer tyre as its “Choice to buy”. The recommendation was given to only six of the 18 175/65 R14 tyres tested. “Choice”, a well known consumer magazine in Australia, selected a common tyre size which is fitted to many compact cars.

Infinity Tyres exhibited at Ireland’s Charleville show

Infinity Tyres aimed to stand out at the recent Charleville Show, Ireland’s largest agricultrual show. Irish dealer, Daly Tyres, and the Infinity-backed rally car placed at the brand’s stand were said to have caught visitors’ attention. The car, an Infinity-branded Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 was available all day for photo shoots with the many budding young drivers and their parents queuing to get their children, who were wearing their own competition helmet and gloves, into the car. As Eamon Daly, owner of Daly Tyres, said: “The Infinity car gave pleasure to many people and hopefully, when they view the pictures, they will come back to buy Infinity products”.

Solvay notifies EC of Rhodia friendly takeover bid

Belgian company Solvay has informed the European Commission of its friendly takeover bid on Rhodia in order to gain the competition authority’s approval of the transaction. The cash takeover offer was first announced to Rhodia shareholders in early April, with Solvay saying it would pay 31.60 euros per share for the French chemical manufacturer. Rhodia’s board of directors unanimously recommended acceptance of the offer.
