Micheldever praises Motor Codes shortlisting

Micheldever’s retail director has called the shortlisting of four Micheldever/Protyre tyre centres in the annual Motor Codes Garage of the Year competition as a “fantastic achievement.” The entries represent the largest number of finalists from an independent tyre centre group; the Micheldever locations shortlisted in the independent garages category are Micheldever Station (near Winchester), Harris Brothers (near Swansea), Thistlewaites Tyres (Bolton), and Barry and Wilkinson (Winsford, Cheshire).

International manufacturers’ revenue in China down last year, says CRIA

According to the China Rubber Industry Association, the 43 major tyre companies belonging to the association’s Tyre Branch increased their production by an average of two per cent in 2012, producing a total of 325.5 million tyres, 287 million of which were radials. Sales revenue for the 43 companies was RMB 205.6 billion (£21.9 billion), a 0.3 per cent year-on-year increase.

Learn from Australia on supermarket fuel pricing – PRA

"The initiative by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) that will see supermarkets stick to helping shoppers with lower grocery pricing instead of subsidising fuel offers is music to the ears of all our small, often family owned and run, petrol filling stations who are facing extinction by the aggressive price discounting from the 'big four' UK supermarkets" said Brian Madderson, Chairman of the Petrol Retailers Association.

UK tyre wholesalers ‘struggling’ in a growing market – Plimsoll

Recent Plimsoll Analysis reports that the tyre wholesalers and distributors market is “in a healthy state” and on average sales are increasing at 7.9 per cent. Meanwhile margins are sitting at 2.9 per cent and 21 companies are said to be “struggling for survival."

Pirelli control tyre for Australian GT

After competing as one of three tyre suppliers to the Australian GT Championship in 2012, Pirelli’s Australian motorsport supplier Trofeo Motorsport has been granted the rights to become the control tyre supplier for the 2013 season, and the naming rights sponsor for the category for the next three years.

Avon ready for MCN show appearance

Avon Tyres is set to showcase its latest 3D Ultra range at the Carole Nash MCN London Motorcycle show later this week. The show, which takes place in the ExCeL arena at London’s Royal Victoria Dock from 15 to 17 February, will see the tyre maker partner with FWR – one of London’s largest stockists of motorcycle tyres – to highlight the range. Both the 3D Ultra Sport and 3D Ultra Supersport, designed for road-going superbikes, will be on display alongside other tyres from the Avon range, include the Storm 2 Ultra sports-touring tyre, the Cobra cruiser tyre, Roadrider – for classic and commuter machines – and Avon’s scooter tyres.

Theme for Michelin Challenge Design 2014 announced

The Michelin Challenge Design is now in its twelfth year and once again it invites aspiring designers from around the world to focus on design relating to a theme or an emerging trend in the automotive industry. For the 2014 competition, Michelin has chosen the theme “Driven/Undriven: The Duality of Tomorrow’s Automobiles.” Under this topic, participants are asked to explore the human connection to a vehicle and address the potential of autonomous motoring, as it opens new possibilities in automotive design. Specifically, participants in the 2014 Michelin Challenge Design are encouraged to design a vehicle with features and capabilities to engage drivers both in an “Undriven” autonomous mode and a “Driven” driver-controlled mode.

Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP fitted to MV Agusta F4 range

MV Agusta has chosen to fit Pirelli’s Diablo Supercorsa SP tyres as original equipment on the basic, R and RR versions of its 2013 F4 range. The tyre is manufactured as a race replica version of the SC (Special Compound) mix version used in the World Supersport, Superstock 1000 FIM Cup and UEM European Championship in 2013. The racing street tyres in sizes 120/70 ZR17 on the front and 200/55 ZR17 on the rear are the latest fitment deal in a series of inter-Italian partnerships between the motorcycle brand and the tyre supplier.

VW to introduce budget brand?

There are reports from the North American International Auto Show, (Detroit, Jan 14 – 27) that Volkswagen will decide this year whether to introduce a new budget brand aimed at developing markets.

If the company decides to go ahead, it would almost certainly start in China, where VW recorded a near-25 per cent increase in sales to a total of 2.15 million in 2012. But India and other new markets such as Mexico could also be targets for a low-cost VW brand.

Milltek Racing switches to VW Golf for 2013 Time Attack

Exhaust manufacturer Milltek used the occasion of Autosport International to reveal the car in which its team will compete during the 2013 UK Time Attack Championship. Having won the 2012 Club Classes with a Nissan GT-R in the hands of driver Richard Marshall, the Milltek team will return to its VW Group roots with a prepared VW Golf GTI Mk6, as it goes head to head with the reigning Club Pro 2WD class champion, Bo Nielsen in his Astra VXR Coupe.

Search for best company car driver

A new competition promoting fleet driver safety has been launched today in a bid to find the UK's best Company Car Driver. The ‘Fleet Driver of the Year' award starts in earnest today, with the launch of the entry website at www.fdoty.com. This unique competition is being organised by vehicle leasing company ALD Automotive, in association with Fleet World magazine, and event partners Peak Performance and Toyota & Lexus Fleet Services.

Treadsetters 76th in Fast Track 100

Treadsetters (part of the TIA Group) was listed in The Sunday Times 2012 Fast Track 100 Companies, which is jointly sponsored by The Sunday Times and Sir Richard Branson. Treadsetters is placed in 76th position having achieved a 60.51 per cent sales growth since the beginning of the recession in 2008 and are the only tyre company to be named in the report.

ATSE gains share of CBVC fleet

Burton-based independent fleet management company CBVC Vehicle Management has signed ATS Euromaster to support its tyre management proposition for customers. ATS Euromaster reportedly beat off competition from rival firms to win an initial 25 per cent share of CBVC’s fleet business. The new contract sees ATS Euromaster supplying and fitting tyres to a fleet comprised primarily of cars and vans.

Pirelli partnering with HRC Honda at 2013 Dakar

Pirelli will participate in the 2013 Dakar rally as technical partner to Team HRC, fitting the Honda CRF450 Rally bikes ridden by the three riders – Helder Rodrigues, Javier Pizzolito and Johnny Campbell – with Scorpion Rally tyres. This year’s rally gets underway in Lima, Peru on 5 January and ends in Santiago, Chile on 20 January after completing a route containing 14 legs and spanning Chile, Peru and Argentina. For the bikes, this means a grand total of 8,423 kilometres, 4,277 over normal roads to reach special trial tracks or the bivouacs at the end of each leg, and 4,146 kilometres on special timed trials which will determine the competition standings.
