Chinese CV Tyre Imports Continue Unabated in India

The Indian government’s July 2007 anti-dumping legislation is having little effect on the numbers of Chinese truck and bus tyres being brought into the subcontinent. Instead increased numbers of Chinese-produced radials are being imported into India. According to a Hindu Business Line report, there has been no reduction in the share of Chinese tyres in this part of the domestic replacement market; and the price differential between Indian products remains in the range of 10-30 per cent. Imports of commercial vehicles tyres have reportedly skyrocketed in the last five years, with the Chinese tyres making up 91 per cent of the overall tyres tyre imports, according to ATMA figures tracking the market between September 2007 and March 2008.

Yokohama Tire Increasing OTR and Truck Tyre Prices

Yokohama Tire is increasing prices for OTR and medium truck tyres in North America, effective May 2008. Record increases in the cost of raw materials and power are the factors quoted as driving the upcoming rises, which will be up to five per cent for OTR tyres and six per cent for medium truck tyres. Passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres are not included in this latest price increase announcement.

“We have been doing our best to contain the soaring costs of raw material, manufacturing and transportation,” said Yokohama Dan King, Yokohama vice president of sales. “Unfortunately, Yokohama’s pricing must reflect these record costs.”

Goodyear Settles Minority Shareholder Unease in Poland

A disagreement between Goodyear and the largest minority shareholder in its Polish TC Debica operation has been resolved. On February 26 the US tyre major agreed with Polish investment fund PZU Asset Management that it would increase its stake in and significantly increase its production of commercial vehicle tyres.

The dispute originated in allegations from minority shareholders that Goodyear was harming their interests through intra-group transactions that diminished TC Debica’s results in favour of those of the parent company. After disappointing third-quarter results PZU Asset Management, which holds about 15 per cent of TC Debica shares, and other investors called for a shareholders meeting to appoint an independent auditor to investigate the relationship between Debica and Goodyear.

Bandvulc Joins the TRA

Bandvulc Tyres based in Ivybridge, South Devon has joined the TRA membership and committed to active participation in the Tyre Industry Federation’s Responsible Recycler Scheme. Commenting, TRA Secretary General, Peter Taylor said members “would look to Bandvulc to bring their considerable expertise and insight into a very important area of tyre recovery”.

Sibur Presents TyRex Agro and VL

During Agritechnica at the end of 2007 Sibur Russian Tyres (SRT), presented a range of products from its TyRex Agro and VL lines, not to mention its TyRex all-steel truck tyre offering. TyRex Agro is a new brand from SRT and, according to the manufacturer, represents a range of “highly-professional progressive environmental-friendly tyres for both foreign and Russian tractors, harvesters, field engines, seeding- and spraying machines.”

T&E Releases Position Paper on Tyre Noise Regulations

The European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E) has released a position paper on improving tyre noise in response to the European Commission’s invitation for public consultation on the topic, made in preparation for the drafting of new regulations. The submissions are intended for the new ‘Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on Advanced Safety Features and Tyres’, a regulation that would most likely be used to replace most of the separate safety-related directives that currently come under the vehicle type-approval Framework Directive.

In its response, T&E urges the European Commission to propose, without delay, effective standards to reduce noise emissions from passenger and commercial vehicle tyres. “It must be kept in mind that road traffic noise is first and foremost a serious and widespread public health problem,” reports T&E. “Noise is often at the top of the list of citizen’s concerns over their quality of life and living environment.” The organisation adds that more than 200 million EU citizens are exposed to levels of road noise, the major source of environmental noise in Europe, that potentially pose risks to their health.

Bridgestone’s ‘Steady Growth’ in Europe

At the recent IAA motor show in Frankfurt Bridgestone discussed details of its ongoing major investment programme for 2007, supporting its long-term plan for steady growth in Europe. Following on from expansion in production capacity at existing plants during 2006, this year will see trial production at Europe’s first fully-automated tyre plant, completion of a new European supply chain system and inauguration of the final phase of the Bridgestone European Proving Ground.

With Bridgestone’s focus on added-value products, such as run-flat and high-performance tyres, and the shift in demand towards larger rim-sized tyres in the European passenger car tyre market, heavy pressure has been placed upon current production resources. Capacity at the Poznan, Poland plant has already been boosted plant by 50 per cent to 23,000 units a day and Bridgestone Europe is currently constructing a new fully-automated plant at Tatabanya, Hungary, which will be ready by early 2009.

Originally designed for the long haul sector of the market, the Amaranto series’ success has led to the extension of SATT technology and enabled Pirelli to develop a new range of tyres for regional haul.

Designed for 17.5” rims, the new FR85 and TR85 Amaranto are due for release in the second half of 2007. Key features of these new products are said to be: excellent mileage; optimum grip; increased tread width; reinforced sidewalls to resist impact; improved tyre integrity and prolonged tyre life.

By extending the existing range of Amaranto tyres into 60 and 70 series; and with the introduction of the new FR85 & TR85 17.5”, Pirelli is aiming to establish a firm foundation on which to build, enabling the future production and development of the highest quality tyres for the transport industry.

US Companies Asked to Provide Details of Recalled Tyres

As a follow up measure to the US recall of tyres made by the Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co., the NHTSA has asked 14 manufacturers and importers, including the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Cooper Tire & Rubber Co., for information about imports received from the Chinese tyremaker. This action has been made necessary by the disclosure that companies other than Foreign Tire Sales may potentially have sold tyres manufactured to the same standard as those currently subject to recall.

In a letter sent to the NHTSA on July 2 Foreign Tire Sales stated: “Though FTS is not in possession of the information as to how many tyres others may have imported or sold in the United States, FTS understands that numerous tyres may have been imported by these other dealers using the same date codes and model numbers as FTS.”

Cooper Tire held an offtake agreement for the supply of truck tyres with Hangzhou Zhongce, and is thus likely to inform the NHTSA that it did not import light commercial vehicle tyres from the Chinese manufacturer. Goodyear, who reportedly entered into an agreement with the manufacturer in 2006, has not commented regarding their communication with the NHTSA.

CTNA Announces $78 Million in New Investments for Mt. Vernon Plant

Continental Tire North America (CTNA) is planning US$78 million in new investments at Mt. Vernon facility. According to Conti, these funds will “significantly expand CTNA’s commercial operations and regionalise the company’s commercial tyre production to better meet market demand in the United States.”

“This is another major investment in our Mt. Vernon facility and one that will allow us to take our commercial operations to a new level,” said CTNA CEO Matthias Schönberg. “The market demand in the US for CTNA’s commercial tyres continues to grow, and this expansion will help us to serve all our customers better, faster and more efficiently.”

Kubica Visits Bridgestone Poznan Tyre Plant

Employees at Bridgestone’s Poznan production plant in Poland enjoyed a day with BMW Sauber F1 driver Robert Kubica, who took time away from the track to pay them a visit. Poland’s star driver, who is currently nursing a leg injury after a horror crash at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, toured the factory and saw how tyres are made before choosing Poland’s winner of the Bridgestone “dreams at heArt” children’s drawing competition.

He turned a few heads on the way, chatting to staff on the production line and signing autographs for a lucky few of his enormous fan club in Poland. The Kubica visit was part of official celebrations for the completion of the final expansion phase at the Poznan plant, raising daily production capacity to 22,000 tyres. The increased output will help meet growing demand across Europe for Bridgestone’s high-performance passenger car tyres.

Tata Steel Looking at Increasing Tyre Wire Production

India’s largest steel producer, Tata Steel, is looking at making new acquisitions throughout Asia in order to expand capacity and establish a stronger foothold as a tyre industry supplier. According to the Indian business newspaper Mint, Tata Steel’s managing director B. Muthuraman has disclosed the company is looking to purchase both finished steel product companies and iron ore or coal mines in order to boost its annual 30 million tonne steel manufacturing capacity by more than 50 per cent within a decade.

“We are looking for acquisitions in the steel wires business in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Apart from expansion in capacity, we also want to move into high grade, higher-value add wires used in tyre cords and oil tempered wires through acquisitions,” said Muthuraman. While the company is currently the world’s sixth largest steel wire manufacturer, producing half a million tonnes per annum, at present their principal tyre industry product is bead wire.

‘The Acid Test is Quality’

When Peter Gaster is not acting as NTDA chairman, the other hat he wears is as group managing director of Kings Road Tyres (for details of his first speech in this role see this month’s TAFF awards coverage). On this occasion the conversation focused largely on KRT’s product range, the recent influx of OTR products and why many manufacturers failed to turn out at this year’s event.

With more tyres than any other stand at the show, Kings Road Tyres’ Brityrex exhibit marked itself apart from the rest. The majority of what was on show came from the company’s wide range of quality private and exclusive brand commercial vehicle tyres, but KRT also had selections from its passenger 4×4 ranges (including Cooper products) on show.
