Toyo to Cease Supplying US Market from China

Following the Obama administration’s decision on Chinese tyre imports, Toyo Tire & Rubber has announced it will soon stop producing passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres for the US market in China. "Most of those tyres will soon be manufactured at our plants in Japan," the company said in a statement. "Our number one priority is customer satisfaction, and we are making every effort to minimise disruption in supplies to our dealers by expediting these production changes."

Magnum SRI Recycled Compound Tyre Test Yield Successful Results

According to rubber recycler Magnum D’Or Resources and Sekhar Research Innovations, September has been a truly historic month. Magnum SRI has for some time performed laboratory trials to convert its activated compound into a high recycled content “custom compound” that is tailored for blending with various high end applications, and on September 19 Magnum SRI announced it has now successfully produced the custom compound on a commercial production scale using a Banbury mixer at the Malaysian Rubber Research Institute facility in Sungai Buloh. This effectively replicates, explained Magnum, the production parameters and process flow it indents to implement in its Magog, Canada facility and subsequently its plant in Colorado.

The Hindu: Indian Tyre Exports Down 22% in July

A report published by Indian newspaper, The Hindu states that while the country remains an important hub for passenger car exports, its tyre makers appear not to be keeping up. Citing a report by the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association, the paper reports in its Business Line section that “automotive tyre exports fell 22 per cent in July to 446,418 units against 571,479” in 2008, while quarterly exports fell “22 per cent to 1,558,393 units (2,042,428 units).”

Reports: Modi Tyres Partnering Continental

Indian tyre manufacturer Modi Tyres has “re-forged” the Modi Continental technical and brand partnership it made with Continental AG in 2001. According to local news sources, the tyres manufactured under the agreement will now be marketed under the Continental brand only, rather than Modi Continental. The new partnership will reportedly be called Modi Tyre Company (MTC) and is described as “only technical in nature and does not involve any investment from the German tyre company.” According to the reports Modi Tyres is aiming to roll out 1.1 million truck tyres and tubes annually and expects to expand its network of dealers from 500 to 2,000. Continental already has a technical agreement with JK Tyres and the reports speculate that this deal may now end.

Continental’s HTL1 super wide trailer tyre was introduced into North American markets in early July, and the company reports that users there are already praising a particular benefit delivered by the on/off road and construction use tyre. Apollo Tyres Increases 2009 Capex

Apollo Tyres has apparently decided to up its 2009 capital expenditure from Rs 7 billion to 9 billion (£113.0 million). Rs 7 billion (£87.9 million) of these funds will go towards more than doubling capacity at its new Chennai facility, which is anticipated to come on-stream later this year. The remaining Rs 2 billion will be used for expanding production at the company’s Baroda plant in India’s Gujarat state.

TGI Releases Statement on ITC Ruling

Tire Group International (TGI) has released a statement outlining a USA based exporter’s point of view” towards the International Trade Commission (ITC) ruling on imported Chinese passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres. In this statement, TGI indicates it will continue to fight the ITC ruling and says that, after meeting with several state representatives, senators, and following phone conversations with the assistant secretary of Import Administration, the company is able to “shed light on the effect this ruling will have on re-exporters” such as itself.

Campaigns Net Thousands of Unsafe Tyres in UAE

According to the Khaleej Times, the use tyre market is alive and kicking in some parts of Abu Dhabi. Healthy demand exists for larger size commercial vehicle tyres, with examples changing hands from between Dh 200 and 700. However the country’s authorities are increasingly voicing their concern over the practice of fitting used tyres to vehicles: According to Colonel Hamad Adeel Al Shamsi, director of the Abu Dhabi Police’s Department of Traffic and Patrols, used tyres were responsible for the death of 13 persons and severe injuries of 16 persons last year. For this reason the department has intensified its inspection of substandard and worn out tyres and launched campaigns to educate motorists about the importance of safety of tyres.

TIA Seeks a Presidential Thumbs-Down on Proposed Tariffs

The Tire Industry Association has reiterated its position regarding Chinese tyres and duties upon them in a letter sent to US President Obama. The TIA has urged the President to reject the recommendation for duties of up to 55 per cent on passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres, as voted upon by the US International Trade Commission on June 29. A copy of this letter was also sent to the United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk.

In the letter, the TIA argued that the ITC proposed tariffs will not protect US manufacturing jobs and will result in higher prices and fewer choices for customers. It also addressed the possibility of safety issues arising should consumer access to affordable tyres be restricted.

US Trade Panel Recommends Sizeable Tariffs Upon Chinese Tyres

Duties of up to 55 per cent may be imposed upon Chinese tyres imported into the US in an attempt to reduce their effect on local manufacturers. On June 29 the US International Trade Commission ruled 4 to 2 in favour of imposing tariffs upon passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres imported from China for a three-year period. Proposed duties for the first year have been set at 55 per cent of the tyre’s value, while in the second and third years the rate would drop to 45 and 35 per cent respectively. These tariffs would be charged on top of the current rate of duty.
