Vacu-Lug Deflates Yokohama Truck Tyre Prices

While the majority of tyre manufacturers are increasing prices, Vacu-Lug Tyres Ltd has announced that it is actually reducing the cost of the Yokohama truck tyres it exclusively distributes in Great Britain. Vacu-Lug managing director Tim Hercock commented: “We have been doing a lot of work recently to improve efficiencies in our sales and logistics channels and as a result have been able to reduce our distribution costs which we have decided to pass on to our customers,” in a statement explaining that the price decrease covers the majority of the Yokohama truck tyre range, he added: “we are constantly being notified by our other tyre suppliers that their prices are going up and we thought that we would try and buck the trend by making the product range more competitive”.

Van den Ban Bringing Extended Private Ranges to Reifen 2010

The Reifen 2010 show in Essen, Germany is only three months’ away, and Netherland based wholesaler Van den Ban Autobanden B.V. has announced it will display numerous new products at its 120 square metre two-storey exhibition space (stand 118, hall 2). Amongst the additions to the Van den Ban portfolio to be highlighted at the exhibition are the latest sizes in its Novex and Blackstone private brands.

98% of London Buses on Michelin PPM Contracts

Many Britons of a certain age will blanche when hearing the words “on the buses”, as memories of the questionable comedy series from the early 1970s flood back uninvited. But at Michelin this phrase has an entirely different, and far more pleasant connotation – Michelin Fleet Solutions, the specialist tyre management division of Michelin Tyre plc, has grown its share of the major bus fleet market to include vehicles operating on 98 per cent of red London bus routes within the M25 – all supported on pence per mile (PPM) contracts. The combined agreements cover well over 8,000 vehicles under the management of London Buses – part of Transport for London (TfL) – operating primarily on 245/70 R 19.5 and 275/70 R 22.5 Michelin X InCity tyres.

Four Additional Yokohama Tyres Earn SmartWay Verification

Four more North American market Yokohama commercial vehicle tyres have been added to the US Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay list of verified fuel-saving technologies for tyres. This brings the number to seven of Yokohama products that are recognised as SmartWay "low rolling resistance tyres." SmartWay Transport, a collaboration between the EPA and the freight sector, is designed to improve energy efficiency and energy scrutiny, and reduce greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions.

Michelin “More Agile Than Ever” – 2009 Financial Results

Despite recording a net income 70.9 per cent lower than that of the previous year, Michelin managing general partner Michel Rollier appeared satisfied enough with the company’s 2009 financial results to comment that “in an environment shaped by a historic decline in tyre demand, especially in mature economies, Michelin was able to respond quickly and more agilely than ever. Thanks to the dedicated commitment of our teams and tight management, Michelin has delivered robust performance and improved its major financial metrics, the foundations of its future growth.”

Bridgestone to Commence TBR Production at Indore, India Plant

Production of truck and bus radials is scheduled to begin at Bridgestone’s factory in Indore, India. Company subsidiary Bridgestone India Private Limited has announced that, in response to increasing domestic demand, approximately 3.3 billion yen (₤22.9 million) will be invested in preparing for the start of TBR tyre production in the first half of 2011. Production capacity is expected to reach approximately 400 units per day by the second half of 2012.

ATS Euromaster Buys 44 New Mobile Tyre Fitting Vans

ATS Euromaster has taken delivery of 44 new 3.5 tonne Mercedes-Benz Sprinters, after investing £1.7 million in increasing the size of its car fitting by roughly 25 per cent. According to the company, the new vehicles will be used to support “the increased demand for mobile fitments which has been driven primarily by the FN50 [top 50 UK contract hire and leasing companies]”, a sector in which ATS Euromaster has reportedly increased its share from 18 to 28 per cent over the last 18 months.

A mix of fleet additions and replacements, the new long wheelbase Sprinters see the dedicated ‘car’ fleet grow to 128 units, supported by a further 200 dual-purpose mobiles which are equipped to fit both car and commercial vehicle tyres.

Passenger Car Tyres a Possibility for Dunlop India

Speaking to media in Mumbai on December 4, Ruia Group chairman Pawan Kumar Ruia indicated he is “very bullish” on the tyre industry and that Dunlop India is considering entering the passenger car tyre segment. “We might look at getting into passenger car tyres whenever we consider an expansion in Dunlop,” Ruia stated. “This will be when we reach 130 tons a day capacity at both the Dunlop plants.”

Michelin Looking to Increase Russian PCR, LCV Tyre Production

Michelin is planning to increase its activities in Russia. Bloomberg writes that Michelin Russia will double capacity at its Davydovo passenger car tyre plant to four million units per annum, and also next year open a facility for retreading commercial vehicle tyres. This retreading operation will apparently serve as a precursor to local truck tyre production.

Conti Adds Low Profile Truck Tyre Sizes to US Range

A number of new sizes have been added to Continental’s low steer and drive tyre line-up in North America to cater to large capacity and car-carrier truck operators. Sales of the new low profile HSL2 Eco Plus (Heavy Steer Long-Haul) and HDL2 Eco Plus (Heavy Drive Long-Haul) tyre in size 295/60R22.5 begin in November, Continental Tire North America reports. This particular size, the company adds, is a full three inches shorter than the 275/80R22.5 size product, but each has 1,215 more lbs. additional carrying capacity in a single fitment for load range G.

Credit Crunch Takes a Bite Out of the Russian Bear

Pierre Cohade, president of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.’s Asia-Pacific business, recently asked if we should move away from talking about BRIC countries (the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China) and instead focus on BIIC. Posting this poser on the popular Twitter social network (follow twitter.com/tyrepress for regular tyre industry updates) from his base in Shanghai, Cohade questioned whether Russia’s position as leading light in the global economy should be replaced with Indonesia which, in his words “continues its spectacular improvements.” He’s got a point.

US Tyre Shipments to Drop 13% in 2009, Says RMA

The Rubber Manufacturers Association projects an approximately 13 per cent decline in US tyre shipments will occur in 2009, principally as a result of a sharp decrease in demand for original equipment passenger car and commercial vehicle tyres. Total tyre shipments are anticipated to reduce by approximately 36 million units to 246 million. The RMA notes this decrease reflects the “difficult economic environment for automotive manufacturers over the past year, continued low consumer confidence and high unemployment.” This year’s projected total shipments represents a 23.4 per cent decrease on the peak of 321 million units reached in 2000.

Russian Tyre Imports Crash 8.6% in 1H 2009

With the Russian economy fairing worst that most at the moment, the tyre business in this part of the world has taken a similarly significant hit, with both imports and exports falling heavily in the first half of 2009. Tyre manufacturers appear to have been offering significant discounts (or exporting lower value items) in the first half of 2009 with unit export figures falling far slower than export values. Data compiled by the Russian Discovery Research Group shows exports totalled 3,259,440 units in the first half of 2009, down 8.6 per cent from 3,566,469 units in the first half of 2008. Meanwhile, passenger-car tyre exports fell 7.1 per cent in the period, with truck tyre exports down 14.9 per cent. Exports of light truck tyres countered the trend, growing 40 per cent.
