UK launch for Michelin X MultiWay 3D

Michelin reports the recent UK release of its latest truck tyre, the X MultiWay 3D, a product that gets its name from the three-dimensional nature of its tread sipes. These namesake sipes, incidentally, are designed to generate grip in difficult climatic conditions. Michelin says it is primarily aiming the tyre at ‘regional’ hauliers – those operating vehicles which typically spend around 60 per cent of time on local roads and 40 per cent on dual carriageways and motorways.

Hefei plant inaugurated – Conti underway in Chinese tyre market

A ceremony marking the official opening of Continental’s first tyre factory in China was held on May 18. Shipments from the passenger car tyre plant in Hefei, Anhui province are expected to become available in the Chinese market within the next few weeks, with versions of the ContiPremiumContact 2 and ContiComfortContact 5 tailored for the Chinese market amongst the first volume products to be manufactured in Hefei. The new plant was officially opened today by CEO Dr. Elmar Degenhart, Nikolai Setzer, Executive Board member responsible for the Passenger Car and Light Truck Tires division, plant manager Tobias Kerle and representatives of local authorities.

Don’t sell China short, says Retread Tire Association

Much sentiment about Chinese manufactured tyres emanating from the US in recent years has had a negative tone to it; from quality concerns to accusations of dumping, Chinese product has not always been welcomed with open arms. Yet it is unfair to tar all Chinese manufacturers with the same brush, and the Retread Tire Association is currently trying to get the message across that Chinese truck tyres can be a suitable alternative.

Michelin appoints new technical specialist

Michelin has announced the appointment of Brian Porteous, 43, who is the company’s new technical product marketing manager with a remit that includes the company’s truck, bus and coach products within the UK and Ireland. He replaces Paul Kendrick, who is retiring after 43 years with the company. Porteous will be based at Michelin’s UK headquarters in Stoke-on-Trent and will report to Martin Covington, head of Truck and Earthmover Marketing.

Toyo raises commercial tyre prices in US

A price adjustment taking effect on May 1, 2011 will see the price of all commercial vehicle tyres sold by Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. increase by up to 15 per cent, with in-line adjustments occurring. The manufacturer states this rise reflects the continued escalation in raw material costs. “Due to the steep increase in the costs of raw materials affecting our industry, we must reluctantly raise prices of our product,” said John Hagan, senior director, sales, Toyo Tire U.S.A. “We appreciate the continued support and understanding of our dealers as we remain committed to providing the highest quality products.”

Goodyear Dunlop inaugurates retreading plant, further investment to come

Last year, Europe’s logistics industry began its recovery after an awful 2009 and the truck tyre aftermarket picked up long with it; replacement market truck tyre sales increased 17 per cent year-on-year while sales of retreads, which account for one-third of Europe’s replacement truck tyre market, also increased 14 per cent. Even before this upturn began, Goodyear Dunlop showed confidence in its retread product portfolio by evaluating its European operations and indentifying an area to further strengthen. Over the following year the company invested 3.7 million euros establishing its third European mould cure retreading facility; at the start of April 2011, some half a year after producing its first retreaded tyre, Goodyear Dunlop celebrated the site’s official opening.

ATS Euromaster offers in-house software for fleet managers

ATS Euromaster is aiming to help fleet managers gain greater control over tyre management with new software developed in-house, combined with its proven electronic tyre inspection tool, to analyse the condition of tyres in such detail that managers can use the resulting report to reduce operating costs and improve tyre life, safety and uptime. The company calls its new analysis tool FleetMax, and it is offering an initial fleet-wide analysis free, and without obligation, to prospective new customers with more than 50 vehicles.

Marangoni enters Kuwait through new Ringtread partner

Marangoni’s Retreading Systems business has won Kuwait’s sole retreader as a retreading partner and brought it into the Ringtread fold. The Italian supplier of retreading materials, tread and equipment reports this deal has been reached as part of its expansion strategy in the near and Middle East. Kuwait, with its modern road network and long transport corridor connecting Iraq in the north to Saudi Arabia in the south, is considered a hub for all transport into Gulf countries.

Michael Andre to leave Giti Tire

Michael Andre has resigned from Giti Tire Europe for personal reasons. Andre, who was marketing director for passenger car tyres Europe and managing director of the company’s Giti Tire Germany GmbH German subsidiary, is said to have made his decision during the middle of March.

Toyo, Sumitomo restart production in earthquake affected areas

More than a week after the Japan earthquake caused widespread power outages and disruption to manufacturing in parts of the main island of Honshu, Toyo Tires and Sumitomo Rubber have recommenced production at factories located in affected areas.

Goodyear ‘starting up’ at Pulandian, China plant

During Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s March 22 investor day, Asia Pacific president Pierre Cohade reported that the company’s newest plant in China, its Pulandian facility, has commenced production. Speaking on the plant that in a couple of years will completely replace Goodyear’s existing Dalian factory, where maximum possible production capacity has already been reached, Cohade confirmed “the factory is just starting up, we made the first tyre last month.”

Conti announces capacity-doubling Brazil investment

A US$210 million investment in Continental’s Camaçari, Brazil plant is expected to boost capacity to around nine million passenger car tyres and almost a million truck tyres per annum within the next five years. Announcing the growth plans, Continental Tire the Americas CEO Matthias Schönberg stated “this investment is part of Continental’s strategy to grow our tyre operations worldwide significantly, especially in the BRIC countries. It will allow us to almost double the production capacity of the Camaçari plant by the end of 2015.” The first signs of capacity growth will be witnessed this year as plant capacity is expected to creep up from its current approximate level of 4.5 million passenger tyres and 350,000 truck tyres to 5 million passenger tyres and 450,000 truck tyres.

Conti’s European CV tyre prices to rise in May

According to Continental, the cost of natural rubber rose fourfold between January 2009 and February 2011 to a record high of more than US$5.60 per kilogram and the current yearly average price has remained at $5.40. Due to this ongoing increase and the rise in other raw material costs, the tyre maker will increase its prices for commercial vehicle tyres in Europe on May 1.

Massey Wilcox Transport signs Michelin tyre deal

National and international haulier Massey Wilcox Transport has signed a deal to fit Michelin tyres across its entire fleet. Michelin’s price per kilometre (PPK) contract, with tyres serviced by ATS Euromaster, has been adopted by the haulier. Massey Wilcox Transport’s managing director, Robert Wilcox, says: “The quality of Michelin’s tyres will improve fleet performance and give us cost savings on fuel and tyres. We are confident that this is the start of a long relationship with Michelin.”
