European liquid, bulk powder and palletised road transport specialist Abbey Logistics has signed up its 730 commercial vehicle assets to Effitires by Michelin solutions, describing the tyre management package as “a perfect fit for our operations.”
Michael Nehring has been appointed to the role of manager of media relations within Continental’s Commercial Vehicle Tires business unit. He succeeds Thomas Recke, who has taken up a position within the company’s Automotive Group in North America. Nehring reports to Dr Christiane Pfeiffer, global head of communication at Continental, and his responsibilities include worldwide media work for the CV Tires business unit, media monitoring and tasks related to internal communication.
Kings Road Tyres (KRT) has added three new sizes to its exclusive Blacklion range of products for the haulage sector. New for 2016 are the BT165 and BD175 steer and drive axle tyres, available in popular sizes 295/80R22.5, 315/80R22.5 and 315/70R22.5.
Kumho’s return to the UK commercial tyre market one year ago signaled the Korean manufacturer’s intention to become a major player in a sector it temporarily left. Having rejuvenated its distribution, products and personnel, its relaunched truck tyre department has a new sales structure led by ex-Bridgestone and Michelin truck tyre specialist, Steve Miller. His experience has since been put to work on the task of reintroducing the brand to an already crowded sector of the business.
Blackpool Transport has agreed a five-year renewal of its Effitires by Michelin solutions comprehensive tyre management programme. The pence-per-mile deal covers Blackpool Transport’s 38 midibuses, 24 full-size single-deck buses and 73 double-deckers, all of which operate from the company’s central depot in Rigby Road. A 10-vehicle ‘reserve fleet’ is also covered under the Effitires contract, as are the Leyland Olympian open-topped and Leyland Atlantean AN68 buses maintained as part of Blackpool Transport’s “heritage fleet”.

This selection encompasses “premier” to “value” ends of the marketplace, sales & marketing director at the wholesaler, John Parker told Tyres & Accessories, with the brands Annaite, Basoon, Infinity, Lassa and Windpower. The wholesaler has recently extended its delivery reach in one of the more remote regions of the UK, launching a delivery service in Devon and Cornwall.
Tructyre’s ISO audit has shown that its mobile service team assisted more than 20,000 roadside breakdowns in 2015, with an average arrival time of 47.5 minutes year-round. The independent tyre management specialist services a varied range of commercial vehicle fleets, with more than 110 employed technicians and service vehicles operating from 25 depots throughout southern England. The company says it aims to maximise vehicle uptime through an emphasis on proactive prevention.
Commercial tyre retreading specialist and tyre management solutions provider, Vacu-Lug Traction Tyres will showcase its range of Vacu-Lug retread and Westlake truck and bus tyres at the 2016 Commercial Vehicle Show. A wide selection of Westlake’s latest range of truck tyres will be on display, featuring drive, trailer and steer applications, to suit a range of commercial transport needs, including heavy and light truck, waste management and construction. Westlake’s manufacturer, ZC Rubber (AKA Hangzhou Zhongce), recently announced two new commercial vehicle tyres for European markets. Vacu-Lug’s stand will be located at Hall 4, Stand 4H120.
Cornwall-based Hart’s Haulage has switched to a 100 per cent Michelin policy, after a trial revealed the premium tyres deliver “cost-efficiency, reliability and longevity”. The family-run company, which operates from a depot near the picturesque town of Redruth, previously operated a mixed tyre policy, but made the move to Michelin following a trial with a set of X MultiWay 3D XDE drive and XZE all-position tyres.
Vegetable grower, packer and distributor Huntapac Produce has renewed its Effitires by Michelin solutions contract for three years, trusting the tyre management package to help the family-run firm deliver excellent customer service – and fresh produce – all-year-round. The price-per-kilometre (PPK) deal covers 100 per cent of the company’s mixed fleet of 58 Iveco, Scania and Volvo tractor units, plus 63 refrigerated and 41 tipper trailers.
Continental has confirmed its intention to erect a new commercial vehicle tyre factory in the USA, and while no start of construction date has been announced the company says it expects to break ground in the next few months “in cadence with market demands.” The tyre maker anticipates that in the long-term an investment of approximately US$1.4 billion will go into the project.
Goodyear has become the sole tyre supplier to Newport Bus, the city of Newport’s principal bus operator. The fleet of nearly 100 buses, with 45 services covering a network of 200 square miles, will be fitted with Goodyear UrbanMax MCA and MCD Traction tyres. Scott Pearson, managing director at Newport Bus, says: “We were impressed with the UrbanMax product, in particular its durability and all season capability. However what really clinched it for us was the service offer from TruckForce.”
The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has chosen Goodyear as the exclusive tyre partner for the FIA European Truck Racing Championship for the next three years. The partnership extends and expands Goodyear’s long involvement in the series for which it has been producing special developed truck racing tyres since 2004. The tyre manufacturer was rewarded for the proven performance of its tyres with the renewal of its contact, which makes Goodyear a partner of the newly formed ETRA Promotion GmbH (ETRA) – the series’ new promotor.
Daniel Gainza has taken on the role of director of marketing, truck tyres EMEA at Continental Corporation. Our sister publication PneusNews.it reports that Gainza, a Spanish national, started in this position at Continental’s head office in Hannover, Germany on 1 January 2016. Prior to this latest appointment, Gainza held the position of business director for Continental’s commercial vehicle segment in Italy, a role he took on in 2007. He will continue to serve in this capacity during a transition period.
