Techking’s Heze plant ready for production

Techking Tires has announced the completion of the greenfield factory that it, along with an unnamed partner, erected in China’s Shandong province. The plant is located in the city of Heze and will produce passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres. Techking says the plant will have an end annual capacity of ten million tyres, an output that will be reached in two phases over a period of five to seven years. The Heze plant began trial operations in November 2012.

Swedish energy saving website publicises best label ratings

A consumer website aimed at improving awareness of energy saving products has begun listing tyre models with AA EU labels. Comprising Pirelli’s Cinturato P7 Blue in three XL sizes – the first AA tyre on the market, launched at Reifen 2012 – and Bridgestone’s October-launched AA-rated Ecopia EP001S, www.toptensverige.se (Topten Sweden) has begun to list tyres among what it believes to be benchmark products. The Topten online service, present in 17 countries in Europe as well as in China and the United States, aims to make transparent and independent assessments of goods and services, and has included the four tyre sizes as its first foray into the product area.

New factories, upgrades – Apollo discusses $1b investment

Apollo Tyres has disclosed further details about its global expansion plans. Speaking with news agency Press Trust of India, vice-chairman and managing director Neeraj Kanwar referred to projects amounting to $US1 million. This investment will take place over the next half decade.

With a technical background that includes a stint as a motorsport technician working in the UK 30 years ago, Yokohama’s president went on to share further details of exactly how the new tyre surpasses its predecessor. To improve steering stability, a new "Matrix Body Ply Structure" was developed employing technology fostered through participation in world motorsports. According to the company, weight was reduced while rigidity was maintained, producing more agile handling and more comfortable ride, although this upgrade is not available on all sizes in the range. Meanwhile the asymmetrical, non-directional tread pattern – inside for enhanced performance on wet surfaces, outside for dry – features a new compound created to provide “exceptional” grip.

Thrills and spills in Macau

Three decades after Japanese tyre manufacturer Yokohama began supplying tyres to the Macau Grand Prix, the company returned to the glitz and glamour of what is the Chinese equivalent of Las Vegas to celebrate 30 years of partnership with the event. In order to mark the occasion, Tyres & Accessories was there to smell the rubber and witness the racing action as well as report on the race-to-road developments of the tyre supplier (see separate article in December's magazine for more on this).

Conti seeking a global top spot

Continental’s tyre business – the German automotive supplier’s most important division – aims to intensify its competition with the top three global players over the coming decade or so. According to an article published yesterday by German financial daily Handelsblatt, growth in international markets as part of its ‘expansion strategy 2025’ will fortify the European market leader’s position in other regions.

Will Chinese manufacturers exploit US tariff end?

Tyrepress.com took the opportunity of Reifen China to discuss the effect on exports of the US tariff on Chinese manufactured tyres coming to an end on 26 September. While Tyrepress.com has often focussed on the introduction of EU tyre labels – which received mixed coverage amongst exhibitors in Shanghai – the effect of its introduction should be seen in the context of the US tariff’s end. The question isn’t just how Chinese manufacturers are dealing with tyre labelling restrictions, but whether they are altering export strategies based on demand created by the expiration of the three years of 35 per cent duty faced by importers of Chinese tyres in the US too.

European exhibitors increasing global visibility at Reifen China

At Reifen China Tyrepress.com spoke with three European wholesalers at the show, representing Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland. Deldo’s Rutger Veerman emphasised the importance of its connection with Asian markets, having sold Chinese brands for 15 years. Chinese products, including Minerva and Fortuna, made up half of the wholesaler’s eight million tyre sales in 2011, while Veerman says the increasing market for higher-end vehicles in Asia has in turn increased demand for premium brand tyres in the Asian replacement market. He said the company’s presence at the show was important in talking with suppliers and customers alike, emphasising Deldo’s “message to colleagues in China to consider strategy more”, since the control offered by private Deldo labels is attractive to “lots of customers”.

Sinopec Nd-BR plant enters service

The China Petrochemical Corporation, or Sinopec, reports that the butadiene rubber factory built by its subsidiary Sinopec Yanshan has opened after a 20 month construction period. The new plant has an annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes.

Tire Technology Alliance’s “Blue” technology produces BB winter tyre

Dr Hongwei Li, general manager and chief engineer of the Tire Technology Alliance, has a history of working with premium brand tyres, and the labels displayed on her relatively young company's tyres at Reifen China seem to suggest an advanced level of tyre technology. Dr Li was promoting two relatively new brands belonging to Qingdao-based TTA; Primmax and Arcron at the show, alongside two "world premieres" for the company.

Reifen China, RubberTech visitors reach 12,000

The sixth Reifen China show took place at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre on 14-16 November, with two neighbouring halls housing RubberTech China 2012 simultaneously on an exhibition area of 11,500 square metres in total. Representing an increased number of nations, exhibitor stands included large displays near the entrance for leading Chinese manufacturers such as Double Coin, Shandong Linglong, Techking, Hangzhou Zhongce and Cooper Chengshan, while less familiar and almost brand new names mingled with visiting stands from India (Apollo) and Europe (Deldo, Interstate and Profil) in the rest of the hall. Joint organisers Messe Essen – responsible for Germany's market-leading Reifen show – and the China United Rubber Corporation welcomed visitors on the first day; the latter's general manager Ma Junhua said that Reifen China's "six years of previous success" was "inseparable" from the support of visitors and exhibitors. Overall, 112 exhibitors from 15 nations – newly including Poland and Russia – were present at Reifen China showing tyres, wheels and garage equipment.

Forever Forest continues in China

Yokohama Rubber’s Suzhou site in China’s Jiangsu Province has been given the ‘Forever Forest’ treatment. As part of the Forever Forest Project, which was first launched in 2007, some 5,000 trees were planted at the Suzhou site. Around 250 people, including Koichi Tanaka, chairman and president of Yokohama Rubber (China) Co., Ltd., and Shigeru Nakano, president of Suzhou Yokohama Tire, took part in the planting activities.

Maxxis unveils $150m Shanghai proving ground

Maxxis International has held a grand opening ceremony attended by nearly 400 domestic dignitaries and overseas partners for its new Maxxis Proving Ground in Kunshan City, directly adjacent to the company’s Shanghai manufacturing plant. The 860,000sqm comprehensive testing facility is estimated to have cost more than US$150 million, and is thought to be the first proving ground on such a large and all-encompassing scale in China. Cheng Shin Rubber Ind. Co., Ltd., doing business as Maxxis International, calls its new testing facility the country’s “first international standard proving ground”. Backing up this claim, Tyres & Accessories/Tyrepress.com was informed at the opening that at least one European original equipment manufacturer – Mercedes – had given Maxxis input into the facilities required at the proving ground to continue to build its OE supply, while a construction firm from Japan was consulted, though it was built by the Chinese.

JLR/Chery JV to produce Jaguar and Land Rover branded vehicles

British automotive success story Jaguar Land Rover is to produce Jaguar and Land Rover branded vehicles in China via its joint venture with Chery Automobile Company Ltd. The two companies laid the foundation stone for their new manufacturing facility in China on 18 November 2012 following formal approval from the Chinese Government for their joint venture and a licence to manufacture Jaguar Land Rover vehicles and new models for a partnership brand in China.

Fullrun, Autogrip displaying new tyres, talks label controversy

Qingdao's Fullrun Tyre Corp is spending its time at Reifen China 2012 introducing new models to its range of tyres, some of which are distributed in the UK through Micheldever, Kings Road Tyres and Malvern Tyres' King David Tyres. The latest Fullrun-branded products on the stand are the F6000 passenger car high performance tyre, which it says it plans to distribute to King David, and the new TB1000 truck pattern. Autogrip also has the AG66 PCR, which Fullrun says will be distributed by Micheldever in the UK. According to the company's representatives, 90 per cent of its Fullrun tyres are rated "either EC or CE".
