It’s “high time” for anti-dumping duties, says JK Tyre & Industries’ Singhania

Days after India’s Directorate General of Anti-Dumping published its final findings into truck and bus tyres imported from China and recommended the introduction of anti-dumping duties for certain products, the chairman and managing director of the country’s largest domestic producer of truck and bus radials supported the measure with comments of his own. During his speech at JK Tyre & Industries Ltd’s annual general meeting on 4 August, Dr Raghupati Singhania declared it is “high time” India’s government undertook such a step.

Safe-Run hails ‘significant progress’ in VMI dispute

Safe-Run has announced that it has made “significant progress” in the patent invalidation and patent litigation process against VMI Holland B.V. Safe-Run explained that the Patent Reexamination Board of State Intellectual Property Office declared that the VMI’s invention patent “Assembly for and Method of Making a Tyre Component” is “entirely invalid”. According to the company, the patent declared invalid is deemed to have “not existed from the very beginning”. In addition, the court has dismissed VMI’s litigation action against Safe-Run for this patent infringement. For its part, VMI stated that it made progress in the same series of cases and that it would appeal a number of adverse verdicts.

China’s civil aviation authority approves Sentury aircraft tyres

Qingdao Sentury Tire reports that its aviation tyres have gained MDA (Modification Design Approval) certification by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) following take-off and landing tests conducted using a Boeing 737 at Yantai Laishan Airport in Shandong Province late last year. This MDA certification, the first given to a privately-owned tyre manufacturer in China, approves Sentury aviation tyres for sale and use within the country.

India considering anti-dumping duties for Chinese truck tyres

The body within India’s Department of Commerce established to investigate unfair trade practices has recommended the introduction of anti-dumping duties on certain tyres imported from China. In the recently published findings of its report into truck and bus tyres with rim diameters above 16-inches that originate in or are exported from the People’s Republic, the Directorate General of Anti-Dumping (DGAD) states it is “of the view that imposition of definitive anti-dumping duty is necessary to offset dumping and injury.”

Major VMI patents upheld in China

China’s Patent Re-examination Board has upheld important patents relating to tyre building technology developed by VMI. Commenting on the board’s decision, VMI Group chief executive officer Harm Voortman said “this decision further strengthens our position in the legal dispute with Safe-Run and reaffirms our confidence in the Chinese legal system.”

ZC Rubber installs artificial intelligence system

ZC Rubber has installed a smart factory project based on the ET industrial brain artificial-intelligence (AI) service system for manufacturing launched by Alibaba Cloud. The goal is to “greatly improve the production in the factories”, according to the company. The cooperation between ZC Rubber and Alibaba Cloud reportedly started at the end of 2016.

Kumho Tire proposal ‘tentatively’ accepted

Although it’s probably too early for champagne corks to pop, progress has been made in the Kumho Tire shareholding negotiations. Yonhap News Agency writes that the tyre maker’s creditors have “tentatively agreed to accept original proposals” made by Kumho Asiana, adding that this may pave the way for creditors to complete the sale of the 42.01 per cent shareholding to Qingdao Doublestar Tire.

Tire+ partnering with CRIA for inaugural 2017 event

From 20 to 22 September 2017 China Rubber Industry Association (CRIA) and China United Rubber Corporation (CURC) will jointly host the new Tire+ tyre trade show at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. The Tire+ expo will be held alongside the 17th China RubberTech. According to the organisers the new show features six particular highlights, but first – before take a closer look at those – here’s a little background.

Hixih Group investing in car, truck tyre capacity

This year, the Hixih Rubber Industry Group is investing nearly RMB 6 billion (£682.3 million) in its two subsidiaries, Shenzhou Tire and Tongli Tire. Two separate projects will see the creation of a new car tyre facility and a doubling of capacity for all-steel truck radials.

PCR capacity at SRI’s Hunan, China plant to treble

According to a news report from Japan, production capacity at the Sumitomo Rubber (Hunan) Co. Ltd passenger car tyre plant in Changsa, China will treble by 2020. Nikkei Asian Review writes that Sumitomo Rubber Industries will invest some 30 billion yen (£205 million) in its subsidiary to increase daily output from 20,000 to 60,000 pieces. The publication adds that the company aims for a daily capacity of 100,000 passenger car tyres in China, an amount that anticipates growing demand for fuel-saving tyres.

Qingdao Doublestar Tire’s bid to acquire 42.01 per cent of South Korean tyre maker Kumho Tire is developing into a drama of the sort not witnessed since a stubborn Cooper Chengshan Tire helped derail Apollo Tyres’ purchase of Cooper Tire & Rubber. Business Korea writes today that 41 Kumho Tire executives, including chief executive officer Lee Han-seob, intend to resign should Kumho Tire’s creditors sell the share to Doublestar.

Linglong Tire partners in China’s first 3D printed tyre project

Joint developmental work between Shandong Linglong Tire and the Beijing University of Chemical Technology recently bore fruit with the successful production of 3D printed polyurethane tyres. The tyre maker comments that this 3D tyre printing is a first in China.
