Safe-Run pays VMI damages after China appeal court IP judgement

Leading tyre building machinery manufacturer VMI Holland B.V. has issued a firm rebuke to Safe-Run Intelligent Equipment Co., Ltd after the latter issued a press release on 31 July claiming victory in the companies’ ongoing legal dispute. Contrary to Safe-Run’s view, VMI said the Jiangsu High People’s Court of China’s ruling represented “a major defeat for Safe-Run and almost total vindication of VMI’s position.” VMI first announced it had won “a significant lawsuit” against Safe-Run relating to its intellectual property in February 2021. Subsequently, the Netherlands-based firm said the appeal court finalised its judgement that Safe-Run were infringing on VMI’s two key patents relating to tyre building machines. Safe-Run was ordered to stop infringements immediately and pay VMI damages totalling RMB 2.46 million (around 320,000 euros). VMI notes that these payments are “very high [compared] to the average damage awards of around RMB 100,000 in similar cases in China.” Safe-Run’s statement is not currently available.

Citexpo announces 2022 dates

The organizing committee of Citexpo have announced that the next edition of the Chinese tyre trade show will run from 12-14 December 2022 at the Shanghai World Expo exhibition centre. The last Citexpo (the 17th edition) was held in the summer of 2019 before the global Covid-19 pandemic caused havoc with largescale in-person events.

Linglong Tire cooperating with Volvo Group’s Shandong Lingong

Shandong Linglong Tire has signed a strategic cooperation with Shandong Lingong, and no, this isn’t a typo. The Shandong, China-based tyre maker more commonly known as Linglong Tire entered into this arrangement with Volvo Group company Shandong Lingong Construction Machinery (SDLG) on 29 June. Wang Feng signed the cooperation on behalf of Linglong Tire, with Wen Degang, SDLG general manager, performing the honours for the construction equipment company.

Sailun: New Supervisory Board chairman

Sailun Group has appointed a new chairman for its Supervisory Board. Ji Qing Li, who held the position since 2014, submitted his resignation on 9 July. His successor was named during a meeting three days later; Hao Li has taken on the role.

Jiangsu General investing 400 million euros in Chinese car tyre factory

Jiangsu General Technology Co. Ltd, which is known as General Science or Jiangsu General, has announced plans to invest 3.061 billion yuan (£341.930 million; 399.958 million euros; US$473 million) in the construction of a 10.2 million tyre a year factory in Anqing, Anhui Province, China. The announcement of the new Chinese production base follow plans for investment in the construction of a separate factory in Cambodia.

Sailun inaugurates upgraded acquired plant

On 27 June, Sailun Group officially inaugurated the modernised former Anchi Tyres facility in Weifang, Shandong Province. Group subsidiary Sailun (Weifang) Tire Co., Ltd. invested RMB 719.9 million (£81.3 million) to upgrade production at the acquired plant and implemented its improvements within a timeframe of just six months.

Camfin increases its stake in Pirelli to 14.1%

Camfin S.p.A. (Camfin) and Longmarch Holding S.à.r.l. (Longmarch), an investment vehicle owned by the Chinese Niu family which owns Chinese tyremaker Hixih, have entered into an agreement concerning the acquisition of shares in Camfin shareholding by Longmarch. The agreement represents the fulfilment of an April 2020 accord between Camfin and Longmarch, which included a call option for 4.89 per cent of Pirelli and means Camfin now owns 14.1 per cent of Pirelli.

Bridgestone divesting China synthetic rubber operation

Bridgestone Corporation has announced that it will sell Bridgestone (Huizhou) Synthetic Rubber Co., Ltd., its China-based subsidiary for manufacturing synthetic car tyre rubber, to Taiwan’s LCY Chemical Corp. The company has not disclosed financial aspects of the transaction.

Doublestar working with Huawei on 5G tyre network

The Doublestar Group reports that it has signed a cooperation agreement with information and communications company Huawei. According to information posted by Doublestar, the partners will utilise their respective strengths to develop the infrastructure for a 5G network over which tyre pressure, temperature and wear data can be transmitted and shared between vehicles and companies in real-time.

Linglong investing almost $1 billion in new circular economy-focused China tyre factory

Shandong Linglong Tire Co. Ltd is investing 6.066 billion yuan (£669.678 million; 779.348 million euros; US$949.830 million) in its latest tyre factory. Tyres & Accessories has confirmed that the roughly billion-dollar Tongchuan City factory project will put sustainability at the heart of its plans, which include largescale retread capacity.

Linglong moves to 7+5 tyre factory investment model

The board of Shandong Linglong Tire Company Ltd has revised its 10-year “medium and long-term development plan (2020-2030)” to focus on a 7+5 rather than a 6+6 tyre manufacturing capacity expansion model. Up till April 2020, Linglong has worked according to a 5+3 plan, but last year this was upgraded to 6+6, meaning the company plans to run six tyre factories in China as well as six situated in international locations. However, according a stock market filing dated 10 June 2021, Linglong’s board voted unanimously in favour of running a total of seven plants in China and five internationally.
