Will the EU Tread on the Inch Worm?

In the last month the subject of metrification has caused something of stir. But if the reports that such a blanket conversion would cost billions are true, it is easy to see why. The furore all boils down to a new proposed EU directive designed to standardise all measurements to the metric system – and in so doing literally decimate inches. EU directive 80/181 also seeks to do away with the kind of imperial/metric dual markings that are currently commonplace with supermarket weights and alcoholic drink quantities for example. According to reports, the threatened legislation aiming to ban all non-metric measurements is scheduled for introduction in 2010 – only three years away.

The Next Level

Fresh from the success of pre-selling over 1 million winter tyres by August this year, Deldo has announced plans to further its interaction with the UK market, arranging to meet clients at next May’s Brityrex trade show. Tyres & Accessories contacted Deldo marketing manager, Rutger Veerman, and also learnt that the company and its key Chinese manufacturing partner, South China Tire & Rubber Company Ltd (Guangzhou) is investing in improving product production.

To get an idea of the scale of Deldo’s operation you need only look at the company’s annual turnover. In recent years Deldo have achieved an annual growth rate of approximately 10 per cent. Wanli remains Deldo’s best selling budget product, with a range of 160 (in 2007) passenger, light truck, SUV, 4×4 and truck tyres. Deldo is likely to sell 2 million Wanli products this year.

Hankook Tire’s Growth is Based on Quality

An investment of about 500 million euros (£340 million) into a new tyre factory is a clear statement of the future direction of a company. Hankook’s decision to invest in Central Europe rather than the US, Korea or China shows what an important role the European market plays in Hankook’s future growth and development strategy. The new factory, which will be built in the Hungarian city of Dunaujvaros, not only provides the company with missing production capacity close to important sales markets and cheap but highly-skilled workforce, but also goes far beyond the obvious, Seung Hwa Suh, president of Hankook’s European headquarters in Germany, says in an interview with Tyres & Accessories. There are three keywords that Mr Suh frequently uses to describe Hankook’s strategy for Europe and the rest of the world: quality/innovation, service and brand awareness.

Tyre Industry Hits a Host of Roadblocks

(India/Rubber Asia) After over 70 years of its existence and continuous development, China’s tyre industry is on firm ground. The Chinese tyre-making sector has now evolved into a huge, full-fledged industrial system that continues to attract international attention. However, there are obstacles to be overcome. After becoming a member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), China’s tyre industry entered the era of diversified ownerships. And, the industry transformed itself into three types of ownerships – state-owned or state-controlled, private, and foreign-funded enterprises – from a wholly state-owned system. Thus, China’s tyre industry has entered a critical period and, in the process, is facing new challenges and responsibilities.

China, US Groups Sign MOU on Technology, Brand Development

(Akron/Tire Review) The Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) of China signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Beijing to promote dialogue and collaboration between the North American and Chinese automotive industries in the areas of technology, management and standards development, AIAG said.

The agreement establishes a foundation for both associations to work together in support of their members’ needs for standardised processes in quality, materials management, logistics and e-commerce, the statement added. The MOU will initially focus on channels of communications for sharing information between AIAG and China’s SAE.

New Truck Tyres from Evergreen Global

Singaporean wholesaler Evergreen Global has announced the extension of its United brand truck and bus radial range. Produced in what the company describes as a “premium manufacturing plant” in China, the products have reportedly increased in popularity in the European markets because of their consistency and quality and performance.
“These Tyres prove their durability even in the extreme conditions of the Middle East and Africa,” company representatives told Tyres & Accessories, adding: “Evergreen is keen to increase its presence in the European markets and looks forward to having new partners.”

Product Strength – Hercules International

Earlier this year Hercules International launched the Ironman range of tyres. These are available as commercial light vehicle, 4×4 and passenger car radials. The Ironman PCR range is subdivided according to speed rating. As a result the Type-H line consists of twenty-two 60 to 75 series products in 13 to 16-inch diameters; five 13 to 14-inch 70-series sizes in the Type-T line; and two 15-inch 50 series products in the Type-V offering. The new brand also offers a number of 12 to 15-inch van products and five 15 to 16-inch Radial A/T 4×4/SUV sizes.

Bucking The Trend – Tym International

Tym International is based in Kings Lynn Norfolk and proudly boasts that it is one company that has bucked the trend in the last four years by continually improving sales of truck tyres by an average of 32 per cent. This year the company says that Triangle brand sales are already up 100 per cent on 2005.

Continental Enters China Plant ‘End-Game’

“We are making the final decision of the destination between two Chinese cities for passenger- and light-duty truck-use tyres production,” Continental AG executive board chairman, Manfred Wennemer, told the China Daily Newspaper. He did not give details of exactly which cities were being considered for a new production plant, but put the total proposed investment at 200 million euros and explained that his company plans to open 100 franchised and owned retail stores in the country in 2007.

Informed sources told Tyres & Accessories that the two short listed sites are likely to be selected from three possible cities. These are: Shen Yang, Dalian (Liaoning) where the likes of Michelin, Bridgestone and Goodyear are already producing tyres; and Tianjin, where Bridgestone has another factory.

Kirkby Tyres’ Extensive Offering

Kirkby Tyres has been involved in tyre and wheel wholesaling and distribution since 1958, building up a reputation for comprehensive stockholding, economic pricing and dependable delivery. For many years, Kirkby was associated mainly with the Alliance brand of agricultural and earthmover tyres, but in recent years the company has added to its portfolio, notably with brands from China, joining Alliance and all major brands from Europe, the USA and Japan. Kirkby operates from a five-acre site in Liverpool and has a daily delivery service on the UK mainland, for quantities up to and including container loads.

Hankook Signs David Higgins for China Rally and Wales Rally GB

Hankook is set to join forces with former British Rally Champion David Higgins on the final round of the China Rally Championship and of the World Rally Championship. The Welsh-based Manxman worked with Hankook earlier this year when he drove to third overall in the Lurgan Park Rally and the parties say they are delighted to be reunited on these two key events. Hankook Motorsport manager Mike Patterson said that Hankook would be supporting David’s efforts in the China Rally this month, which is the final round of the China Championship and the Asia Pacific Championship, together with his entry in Wales Rally GB.

Amerityre to Cooperate With Phelps Dodge

Polyurethane tyre production company, Amerityre has published news that it plans to work with Phelps Dodge. The announcement follows the company’s OTR retread license agreement with Qingdao Qizhou Rubber Company of China, made in August. “In August 2006, we entered into a memorandum of understanding with a specialty tyre manufacturer. The manufacturer will be evaluating our polyurethane elastomer material for retreading medium radial truck tyres and certain sizes of OTR tyres. We also recently entered into an agreement with Phelps Dodge to evaluate polyurethane elastomer retreads for large OTR tyres. The Phelps Dodge programme is part of a broader plan to explore constructing an OTR retread production facility. In this area, we’ll continue to work with other companies to establish similar agreements.”

Aufeer Design Partners with Matador Automotive

Aufeer Design has signed a strategic alliance with Matador Automotive corporation. The agreement was strengthened by Matador Automotive’s acquisition of one third of the Aufeers’s privately held shares. Matador, one of the Slovakia’s biggest corporations, says that is has the primary objective if supporting Aufeer Design activities‘ growth and expansion in Czech, Slovak and international automotive markets, including those involving more than 30 joint-venture companies which it currently owns in the automotive segment.

ETRMA Seeks to Influence EU Decisions

Earlier in the year, the European tyre and rubber industry formed the ETRMA as a successor to BLIC. The idea was to update the way that this industry association was organised and position it to inform the European legislature on subjects relating to tyre and rubber manufacture. Following the completion of this changeover, Tyres & Accessories interviewed ETRMA secretary general, Fazilet Cinaralp and got a clearer picture of the role and function of the organisation.

Michelin Records Increased 3Q Revenues

Michelin has reported a 4.9 per cent rise in third-quarter revenues as a result of charging increased prices. Revenue rose to 4.08 billion euros ($5.12 billion) for the three months ended 30 September from 3.89 billion euros a year earlier. The latest figure was slightly above analysts’ expectations of approximately 4.04 billion euros ($5.07 billion). The recent decline in raw material prices will have only a small impact on full-year earnings, the company said. It said there is a three- to five-month lag before changes in raw material prices affect final sales of tyres.
