Bridgestone Sues GPX International Over ‘Knock-Offs’

At the beginning of February, GPX International was sued by Bridgestone over a range of tyres for forestry vehicles that the Japanese manufacturer said infringed its rights. Bridgestone accused GPX of unfairly competing by its Firestone Rock Master brand name and advertising slogans.

Following the accusations GPX published an official statement “strongly denying” the accusations, which it said were an attempt to “besmirch its reputation.” The manufacturer said it was not aware that the Rock Master name was trade marked and has voluntarily “removed all reference to Rock Master from its website and will change the name of the tyres currently produced under the Rock Master name.”

Chinese Tyre Production Reaches 283 million units

Data from Chinese National Bureau of Statistics reveals 2005 witnessed a sustainable and steady growth in the tyre industry. The data, quoted in a paper recently published by research and markets, reports that output reached 283 million units, up 18.7 per cent over 2004. Sales revenue totalled more than 80 billion yuan (£5.2 billion).

Inter and Pirelli Salute China in Verona Stadium

On the occasion of the Chievo-Inter football match, the word “Pirelli” on Inter’s uniforms was translated into Chinese characters. Pirelli and F.C Internazionale return to a tradition of “speaking Chinese” for the third time in a little more than a year. On the occasion of the “Serie A” championship challenge between Chievo Verona and Inter, the word “Pirelli” on the T-shirts of the “Nerazzurri” team was translated into Chinese characters. With this initiative, Inter and Pirelli aim to salute once again the numerous fans that follow the “Nerazzurri” from the Far East as well.

Giti Tire Joins IRSG

Giti Tire, a large-scale tyre manufacturer based in China and headquartered in Singapore, has joined the International Rubber Study Group (IRSG). Giti, with businesses in many parts of the world, is presently exporting its tyres to more than 80 countries. Lion Copolymer L.L.C., reputed to be one of the largest SBR producers in the US, has also joined the IRSG.

Indian Tyre Market Remains a Closed Market

Since the “Dunlop Rubber Company (India)” was registered in 1926 as the first tyre manufacturer in India – when the country was still a British crown colony – the local tyre market has developed into an important but at the same time somewhat backward market. The sheer size of the market makes it internationally important, but Indian products are rarely sold in the most advanced Western markets. However, in the recent past some manufacturers have invested and continue to invest strongly into new technology in order to tackle problems such as low margins, growing competition from Western companies coming to India and increasing imports from low-cost countries such as China. This process of international adaptation and adjustment on the part of Indian tyre makers has already begun to bear fruit. Nevertheless, the Indian tyre market remains what it always has been: an almost completely closed market and an oligopoly whose future direction is difficult to foresee.

Tyrexpo Africa 2006 Proclaimed a Resounding Success

(SA Treads, Douglasdale, South Africa) After months of discussion, planning and hard work, Tyrexpo Africa 2006 – the first dedicated tyre show in the country after more than a quarter of a century – has come and gone. And by all accounts it was a resounding success. The three-day exhibition was based at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg in September, where over 110 national and international exhibitors and wholesalers took part, including Bandag, Ceat, Continental, Leaderquip, Malas, Maxxis, Michelin, Silverstone, Stamford and Vipal.

Aiming for Perfection

Every year 4.3 million car and SUV tyres come out of Pirelli’s vast Carlisle factory located just south of the Cumbrian capital. Export markets take between 75 and 80 per cent of this number, and Pirelli’s Carlisle products also feature as OE equipment on some of the world’s most respected automotive brands. In a recent interview with the Cumberland News, Pirelli’s head of operations and Carlisle and Burton-on-Trent, Wolfgang Meier, spoke about the operation he overseas.

China Wheel – Expecting to Double Sales

China Wheel Holdings, manufacturer of wheel rims for carmakers such as Nissan and Toyota, has stated that it expects revenue to more than double within three years as new production capacity comes on stream and the Chinese passenger car market continues to grow.

Columbian Acquires Chinese Carbon Black Plant

On January 31 Columbian Chemicals (Weifang) Holdings S.àr.l., completed the acquisition of Shandong Haihua Carbon Black Chemical Co., Ltd. located in the city of Weifang, in China’s Shandong province. This purchase represents Columbian’s first entry into the Chinese carbon black market.

Strong Growth in China

Analysts have reported strong growth in both tyre production and exports in the Chinese market, with exports growing at a substantially faster rate than production. Quoting data obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics, analysts state that 2005 was a year of steady growth for China’s tyre industry, with output reaching 283 million units, an increase of 18.7 per cent over the previous year. This equates to sales revenue of more than RMB80 billion ( £5.25 billion ).

NR Prices See Another Jump

(Akron/Tire Review) Natural rubber prices continue to rise and dive, wreaking havoc among tiremakers and other rubber-based manufacturers. Rubber prices on the Shanghai Futures Exchange increased 2% on Jan. 31 to an estimated $2,800 per ton, according to Bloomberg News, its highest price since August.

Michelin China Reproached for Environmental Standards

China’s State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) has reproached one of Michelin’s factories, the Shanghai Michelin Warrior Tire Company, for failing to alter its activities after violating environmental regulations. In 2006 SEPA accused the tyremaker, who entered the Chinese market in 1998, of failing to follow relevant eco-friendly regulations in China, and now SEPA says Michelin has failed to reach the required manufacturing and waste standards.

Goodyear and Bridgestone – Western Manufacturers in India

Although the Indian tyre market is mainly characterised by its strong growth, it still is a market that is relatively self-sufficient. India still imports tyres, and the volume of imports is forever growing. Nevertheless, the import market still accounts for less than three per cent of the total, although decreasing tariffs and duties over the coming years will certainly facilitate tyre imports. But the question remains why Goodyear and Bridgestone remain the only foreign tyre manufacturers to have established their own production base in India – despite all the talk about how important the Indian market, as part of the so-called emerging BRIC states (Brazil, Russia, India and China), is considered to be.

Hankook Targets 2007 Sales of US$3.6B

The CEO of Hankook Tire, Choong Hwan Cho, has announced the company’s global sales target for 2007 is $US3.6 billion, a significant increase on last year’s realised US$2,5 billion. Hankook are also targeting an operating profit of US$340 million and a recurring profit of US$282 million.

Officials Challenge Polluting Tyremaker

Deputies from the people’s congress in the Chinese city of Guangzhou have asked officials from the city’s Environmental Protection Bureau why no action has been taken to deal with the large amount of pollution caused by a state-owned tyremaker located in the city. South China Tire & Rubber, one of the country’s largest tyre suppliers, reportedly emits large quantities of sulphurous gas from its factory, and this is claimed to affect the health of an estimated 100,000 people.
