Kanwar: European Apollo tyre sales to increase 30% by winter

Apollo Tyres’ managing director Neeraj Kanwar is expecting European aftermarket sales of its Apollo-branded tyres to grow to between 60,000 and 65,000 units a month by the winter season. According to an interview published in the India’s Hindu Business Line, the company is currently selling around 50,000 of these tyres a month in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK and Italy, meaning the proposed uptick in sales will be in the order of 20 – 30 per cent. According to the reports these figures are “over and above the sales of Vredestein branded tyres manufactured in Europe.”

Yokohama to support Toshi Arai and Fumio Nutahara in IRC Europe

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. will provide its Advan A006T (for tarmac) and ADVAN A053 (for gravel) rally tyres in support of Toshi Arai and Fumio Nutahara in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC), which has been underway in Europe since January. Yokohama Rubber is endeavouring to improve recognition of its Advan rally tyres in Europe by supporting proven drivers in highly popular rallies.

Analysts: Michelin/Double Coin positive, but questions remain

Following on from the news that Michelin has signed an MoU partnering with Double Coin and Shanghai Huayi to create a joint venture manufacturing Warrior brand light vehicle tyres in China, analysts have responded with cautious optimism. According to analysis published by Morgan Stanley, Michelin is already producing Warrior light vehicle tyres in China, via an existing joint venture with Double Coin, with exclusive rights on the Warrior brands in China granted by government-held Double Coin.

Michelin and Double Coin sign Chinese production Memorandum

On 18 April Michelin announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Double Coin Holdings Ltd. and Shanghai Huayi (Group) Company to create a joint venture to produce and market Warrior-brand passenger car and light truck tyres for the Chinese market. The transaction is still subject to signature of the final agreements and approval by Chinese authorities. The new company would be 40 per cent owned by Michelin and 60 per cent by the Chinese partners. It will operate a plant now being built in Wuwei County, Anhui province, around 400 kilometres west of Shanghai.

Continental recommends global OEMs adopt direct TPMS technology

Continental recommends car manufacturers worldwide adopt the consistent use of direct measuring technology in their new car models to ensure “vehicle tyres are always inflated to an optimum level.” Writing in a press statement promoting the international tyre, TPMS and automotive supplier’s position on the issue, Continental said its recommendation is based on “steadily rising requirements to take on TPMS” and also reflects the “significant potential of direct measuring technology, making it possible to exploit the greater contribution to CO2 reduction.”

Diagnosing and resetting TPMS issues

Tyre fitting bays and garages increasingly being convinced to do TPMS sensor work by the argument that they are giving away business to main dealers by not offering this service. The reason tyre depots haven’t done so much of this work in the past is because they are either ill-equipped or are worried about working with tyre sensors, says tyresensors.com.

Pirelli previews Chinese Grand Prix

Less than 72 hours after concluding the Malaysian Grand Prix, Pirelli was in China, beginning preparations for round three of the 2011 Formula One World Championship. As was the case in Australia, the teams will have an extra set of hard compound tyres for use during Friday’s first free practice session only. The allocation for the rest of the weekend is unaffected. The manufacturer says the surface and weather in China is generally less aggressive than Malaysia, with conditions more similar to Australia. This means that there should be 30 per cent less tyre wear and fewer pit stops than seen at the Malaysian Grand Prix, which provided a thrilling battle from start to finish.

Pirelli responds to F1 driver “concern over ‘tyre marbles’”

Formula One tyre supplier Pirelli has responded positively to concerns voiced by drivers Fernando Alonso of Ferrari and Renault’s Vitaly Petrov – among others – over “tyre marbles”, or crumbs of rubber left on track as a result of Pirelli’s desire to increase interest in racing through tyre degradation. Petrov claimed his ignominious exit at the Malaysian Grand Prix was caused by the rubber particles caused by increased tyre wear. Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery responded by maintaining that the “marbles” were a “natural consequence” of the manufacturer’s policy of providing tyres to help build racing excitement, but that it would seek ways of reducing the rubber left on track without undermining this principle. Pirelli is currently preparing for the Chinese Grand Prix, which begins tomorrow. A video interview with Hembery following the Malaysian Grand Prix is available in the subscribers area below.

Westlake joins TyreSafe

Westlake Tyres, which are produced by the Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Company (ZC Rubber) and distributed in Europe by Eskay Tyres Ltd. – part of the Al Dobowi Group, has joined TyreSafe. According to a statement announcing the news, Westlake will use its technical expertise to assist TyreSafe in its campaigns aimed at improving road safety.

Yokohama to share China strategy during Auto Shanghai

At the upcoming Auto Shanghai 2011, which runs from April 19 to 28, Yokohama Rubber will hold a press conference outlining its business strategy for China. One part of its plans for the growing market there is the release of the BluEarth eco tyre range; following its recent launch in Japan and Europe, Yokohama Rubber intends to release the line-up in China this autumn. Yokohama says it will use the show to improve recognition of BluEarth within China. During Auto Shanghai the Japanese tyre maker will also publicly announce its activities in collaboration with the China Environmental Protection Foundation.

Goodyear has “positive momentum”: Kramer

In his address at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s Annual Shareholder Meeting today, chairman and chief executive officer Richard J. Kramer said he is confident in Goodyear’s strategy and believes the company is well positioned to achieve its goals, having been pleased with Goodyear’s 2010 performance, which exceeded the company’s targets. The company’s financial results reflected significant improvement in all four regional tyre businesses, most notably North American Tire’s return to profitability, he said.

Chinese recall of 75,000 Kumho-shod cars announced

Vehicle manufacturers in China are set to recall up to 75,000 cars fitted with Kumho tyres as original equipment. According to various sources, Beijing Hyundai will recall around 63,500 cars built between June 4, 2008 and January 13, 2011, while some 7,200 Kia Rio and Cerato vehicles and almost 4,700 cars manufactured by Great Wall Motor will be recalled.

Toyo to acquire majority share in Silverstone manufacturer

At present Toyo Tire & Rubber is in negotiations to acquire a 75 per cent interest in China based tyre manufacturer Shandong Silverstone Luhe Rubber & Tyre Co., Ltd. The Japanese company’s Board of Directors signed an acquisition agreement on April 12 and expects to close the acquisition deal in early June 2011. Toyo plans to begin producing Toyo brand tyres at the new subsidiary “as soon as practicable” and aims to “establish an optimal tyre supply system” both in China and in all its other overseas markets.
