Solvay silica production capacity in France

Solvay has inaugurated its newly expanded Collonges-au-Mont-d’Or site in France, which produces highly dispersible silica. The investment follows a similar volume expansion last year in the US and the start-up in 2010 of a new plant in China. According to the company, these three investments required 74 million euros in total.

“Our worldwide highly dispersible silica production capacity now exceeds 400,000 tons,” commented Tom Benner, president of Solvay’s Silica Global Business Unit. “Demand for highly dispersible silica is pulled by a growing need for safer and more energy-efficient tyres and the new European tyre labelling legislation applicable from 1 November,” he added. “We can now meet our customers’ needs globally as this new legislation takes effect.”

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres Appoints CEO

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres has appointed Mike Askew as chief executive officer. He joins the firm from APPH Group, a company that designs and manufactures hydraulic systems and landing gears for commercial and military aircraft. Askew had been managing director at APPH for almost three years and before that he held senior positions at Doncasters and GKN Westland Helicopters.

Sixth Reifen China to open next Wednesday in Shanghai

The sixth edition of Reifen China will open next week, taking place at the Shanghai New International Exhibition Center on 14-16 November. The trade fair for the Asian tyre market is run by Messe Essen and the China United Rubber Corporation, and the organisers predict that 2012 will see further growth on previous years. On an area of 12,000sqm, around 130 exhibitors from 14 countries will present their ranges of tyre, wheel and garage products, with more than 10,000 trade visitors expected to attend. Sponsoring the event is Germany’s Federal Association of the Tyre and Vulcaniser Trades (Bundesverband Reifenhandel und Vulkaniseur-Handwerk, or BRV).

25 years of Supertracker: from cottage industry to 14,000 units

Southampton based alignment equipment supplier, Supertracker is 25 years old this year and Tyres & Accessories visited managing director Trevor Lovesy and alignment specialist, Jerry Barker to celebrate the milestone. Having been established by Lovesy’s parents in 1987 the company has moved from a cottage industry needing to sell 26 units in its first year to a major supplier of alignment equipment to Kwik Fit. It is indicative of the company’s quick progress that 1987 actually saw 87 sales, with the first units manufactured in August.

UHP sales fuel Hankook 3Q profits rise

Hankook Tyre, reported in NZ News, says that its operating profit jumped 21.7 per cent in the third quarter from a year earlier, fueled by brisk overseas sales of its ultra-high performance (UHP) tyres. Operating profit reached 219.6 billion won (US$ 201 million) in the three months ending Sept. 30, up 21.7 per cent from the same period last year.

Now the dust has settled from the first suggestions that Apollo Tyres was preparing to bid for Cooper Tire, the rumour mill has slowed considerably. There are those that are saying there is no smoke without fire when it comes to the reports published in the Indian and then global press; and there are those that believe it was all a carefully orchestrated publicity manoeuvre. Whatever the truth turns out to be, the interest surrounding this story is a reflection of the facts that the global market is ripe for consolidation and that there are a lot of ambitious tyre companies in and around the top 20 aiming to make it into the top 10.

Westlake introduces PCR fitments, Vacu-Lug deal

The Al Dobowi Group’s Eskay Tyres distributes the Westlake brand in several European markets, including the UK, and the company used the occasion of Brityrex to endorse personally the recently sealed distribution agreement with Vacu-Lug, the Lincolnshire-based retread tyre manufacturer. Surender Singh Kandhari, chairman of Al Dobowi Group and Tim Hercock, managing director of Vacu-Lug, met with their respective teams over lunch during the show. The deal is intended to expand the sales of the Westlake truck tyre brand throughout UK and Ireland (see Fleet Business for more details). At the show itself, Eskay staff introduced the latest Westlake passenger car fitments for the H and V rated RP26 and the high performance SA07.

Shandong Linglong Tyre Co. Ltd. headlined its participation in Brityrex International 2012 with the introduction of its Green-Max product family to the UK market. According to the company, the Linglong stand was visited by prospective customers, apparently “eager to discuss new developments and opportunities.” The new Green-Max passenger tyre range was said to have been of particular interest and representatives from Linglong’s global headquarters in China were also on hand to welcome visitors and answer questions.

Bandvulc to wholesale Boto truck and bus tyres

One of the most striking stands at Brityrex was the black and yellow of Shandong Wanda Boto Tyre Co., Ltd. Obviously this company does not hail from these shores, but walking onto the company’s show stand, Tyres & Accessories was greeted by a familiar southern accent. As it turns out, while the stand was clearly there to promote the Boto name, the decision to exhibit follows on from the Chinese manufacturer’s decision to partner with one of this country’s largest retreaders/fleet tyre suppliers. According to representatives of both companies Bandvulc will now wholesale Boto truck and bus radial tyres in the UK as well as selling the tyres direct to its fleet customers through its Bandvulc Tyre Contracts business.

Chinese tyre makers developing closer links with Europe after ITMA/CRIA meeting

Chinese tyre manufacturers are reportedly boosting their efforts to develop closer links with European markets after a recent meeting between the China Rubber Industry Association (CRIA) and Europe’s Imported Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ITMA). The first of several planned meetings between the two organisations was held at the request of CRIA who are investigating opportunities on behalf of their 1,200 members about how they can deepen their engagement within Europe.

The label may counterbalance the end of US tariffs, says CRIA

On its Chinese-language website, the China Rubber Industry Association links the recently-expired US tariff on consumer tyres with the European tyre label – and refers to both as a “double whammy” for China’s tyre makers. The tariff, which the association also called an attempt at trade protectionism, is held responsible for China’s tyre passenger car and light truck tyre exports to the US dropping from 43 million in 2009 to 31 million in 2010 and 27.3 million the following year.

Double Coin launching 3 new at SEMA 2012

Double Coin Tires and its US distribution partner China Manufacturers Alliance, LLC (CMA) reports that it the companies are unveiling three new products at this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition, CMA will display one of the company’s giant off-the-road mining tyres, the Double Coin REM-11 40.00R57 E4. The 40.00R57 stands almost 12 feet tall and is the latest addition to a range of Double Coin giant OTR radials that includes other 57’, 51’, and 49-inch’ rim diameters.
