Two ArvinMeritor LVA employees are taking up the BEN Centenary Aftermarket Challenge, as they attempt to cycle the full length of the country, from Lands End to John O’Groats. The money raised will go towards supporting auto industry employees and their dependents who find themselves in need of help.
On Sunday 17th April thousands of people took to the streets of London to run the 25th Flora London Marathon. BEN, the Motor and Allied Trades Benevolent Fund, had a team of nine industry members running to raise money for the charity. This is the largest team BEN has ever entered into the gruelling 26.2 mile race and the Fund hopes to raise around £10,000 in sponsorship thanks to the participation and hard work of the runners.
National BEN Week raised over £18,000 for our less fortunate colleagues last year, thanks to the ‘£99 for 99 years’ campaign that the charity adopted. Hundreds of industry members took part by holding their own fundraising activities ranging from raffles and dress down days to cycle rides and other sponsored events. This year, to celebrate a century of care and support for the automotive and related industries, BEN will be bringing back the campaign but re branding it as ‘£100 for 100 years’ for National BEN Week, which runs from 18-24th July (inclusive of BEN’s actual birthday, 19th July).
BEN wants even more industry members to get behind the campaign this year and raise a minimum of £100, either by holding a fundraising event or simply by sending in a donation, so that we can reach our target of £100,000 for BEN’s 100th birthday. However, as fundraising can be quite daunting, BEN has put together a fundraising pack, a comprehensive guide to planning and putting on events, sponsored activities and other fundraisers. Included in the pack are items such as the A-Z of fundraising, which is full of interesting ways to raise money, legal information and even posters and press release templates.
Hi-Q Stafford Tyres is helping a Stoke businessman complete a rather draughty charity challenge – driving to John O’Groats and back, in a car with no roof. John Stephenson, who came up with the idea whilst stuck in a traffic jam, is undertaking the ‘Z car challenge’ in aid of Douglas MacMillan Hospice based in Blurton, Stoke On Trent.
A fast-fit store manager from Telford is set to embark on the biggest journey of his life. Mark Lee, Hi-Q’s Telford store manager, will set off on 27 May 2005 with 60 other people to trek The Inca Trail as part of MacMillan’s Peru Hiking Challenge.
As the third incarnation of the Sir Bob Geldof’s charity song is about to hit the charts, Dunlop is also lending a helping had to some less fortunate people. In a bid to make Christmas a little bit brighter, the tyre manufacturer has sponsored Hand of Help IOM as a way of assisting the charity’s work in a certain part of Romania.
One of the trustee’s of Hand of Help, Chris Baker, visits an orphanage, a dystrophic baby hospital in Botosani and a drop-in centre in Dorohoi twice yearly. He also runs house-building projects to provide housing and employment for needy families. To help with the trip Dunlop has provided Mr Baker with a set of Grandtrek MT2 off road tyres to help tackle the poor road conditions and the amount of snow experienced on the trip at this time of year.
Trips are normally run during the summer, however much of the hardship is endured during the winter months. The trip was therefore moved to Christmas with Christmas gifts, warm clothing and other specialist items taken to bring some joy to people in the area.
“We are extremely grateful to Dunlop for sponsoring our trip. It is difficult to convey how much suffering is endured by the people in this area of Romania and the hope we bring to the area with our visits can not be underestimated,” said Mr Baker
Kingsway Tyres has helped raise more than £4,500 for Children in Need. The dealership worked with a local ASDA store and some television celebrities providing a day of fund-raising activity in Corby, Northamptonshire. The celebrities, including TV chef Rusty Lee and presenter Paul Ross, competed in a series of challenges ranging from leg waxing to competing for the best lap time in a motor racing simulator, provided by Kingsway Tyres’ parent company Bridgestone UK.
“It was a very successful event,” said Bruce Cleghorn, area manager at Kingsway Tyres. “It felt good to aid the Children in Need cause, and everyone had a fun day out too. “Not only were the celebrities that took part in the event very generous to give up their time, but also the general public proved to be very charitable as more than £350 of the total collected was raised from photos with the car and rides on the simulator,” added Bruce.
The tyre dealership, which has 16 outlets across the East Midlands and East Anglia, also brought a replica Ferrari Formula 1 car to the event, and members of the public were given the chance to have their photos taken with the impressive vehicle and also test their driving skills on the simulator in return for a charity donation.
