A former high speed tyre tester is the latest HiQ franchisee, putting his product knowledge into practice at a fast fit garage in Frome. Chris Davison from Bath has invested £45,000 in a new business venture with HiQ after 15 years working in tyre design technology with companies including Goodyear Dunlop. HiQ believes Davison’s experience puts him in an excellent position to use his knowledge in a customer-facing enterprise.
Wholesaler BITS can lay claim to the UK tyre industry’s keenest golfing prowess after its company representatives, Brian Jenkins, John Chappel, John Sipson and Steve Taylor, won the Team Prize – and Taylor the overall first place – in the Westlake-sponsored NTDA Golf Day 2011. John Tarbox, honorary captain of the NTDA Golf Society and ex chairman of the NTDA, labelled this year’s event, “one of the best Golf Days ever” in his prize-giving speech at dinner. The event was held on 15 September at the Oxfordshire Golf Club, with Westlake providing the trophies, including a new permanent prize specially flown in from Dubai for the overall winner – Taylor will also keep a copy.
Labour MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East Paul Goggins has reiterated his full support for Motor Wheel Service’s commercial vehicle wheel safety campaign and promised to maintain pressure on the Department for Transport. MWS, which is headquartered in the MP’s constituency, raised concerns about the lack of examination expertise applied to second hand and take-off wheels that are entering the UK CV aftermarket. Its belief that the problem could be increasing due to financial pressures and a lack of regulation for this market was discussed in a Private Members’ Debate in March 2011, for which Goggins was awarded Parliamentarian of the Month, by road safety charity Brake and Direct Line.
Infinity Tyres has announced its support of the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, with the sponsorship of head of client services for M3 Communications in Shropshire, Nick Lovett, as he completes a 26-mile walk along Hadrian’s Wall this Saturday (10 September). Lovett, 38, from Cannock will be guided by experts across part of the wall, which spans 73 miles in total, and will be walking the marathon length one day challenge dressed as a Roman Centurion. Why? Because the largest ancient monument in Northern Europe’s timeline “dates back to the Romans and this gives me a chance to get a taste of the history of the place I’m visiting.”
Michelin has stepped in with new tyres for an electric milk float so it can complete a charity run from Leicester to Lands End. The classic milk float, that still works six days per week, normally runs on solid tyres but heat build up on long distance runs had become a safety concern.
National road safety charity Brake is appealing to companies to register now for Road Safety Week 2011 to help spread life-saving road safety awareness on UK roads. The week will run from 21-27 November. Brake campaigns director Julie Townsend says: “Companies can play a crucial role in spreading road safety awareness and helping to prevent needless tragedies on our roads.
The UK’s automotive industry charity BEN is inviting industry workers and their families to cycle the “Tarka Trail” – some of the route completed by the world’s most famous fictional otter in Henry Williamson’s 1927 book Tarka the Otter. Unlike Tarka, participants won’t be covering the 180-plus miles covered by the intrepid aquatic mammal, rather starting in Meeth and heading 30 miles north up to Braunton in Devon, taking approximately 4 hours including a stop.
Infinity Tyres has launched its new foundation, which comprises the Infinity Aspire and Infinity OutReach programmes designed respectively to help “talented young people and give them a fair chance”, and “to identify and support local causes in the communities where Infinity operates”. Since Andrew Gordon was told that cancer had returned to his liver and was now inoperable following years of treatment, his love of biking and desire to help the hospital at which he has been treated have led to his plan to ride 5,000 miles around the coast of the UK. His Ride for Life aims to raise money for The Royal Marsden Hospital, London and tyre manufacturer Avon is clearly pleased that its tyres will be fitted to the Honda XLV1000 Varadero, on which he will complete epic journey. The British Horse Society, the UK’s largest equine charity, has teamed up with TyreSafe to educate both amateur and professional horse owners about the importance of correct tyre maintenance and care for their vehicles.
The new partnership has been launched to coincide with Equifest 2011, which takes place from the 18th to 21st August at the East of England Showground in Peterborough. At the event, the Society will distribute TyreSafe’s leaflets offering visitors specific tyre safety advice and information in respect of horseboxes and trailers.

Pirelli has donated items to a charity auction and held a donation-based simulator experience on its stand at Silverstone’s British Grand Prix, raising £6,386 for the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity. The auction was held on Wednesday 6 July at the F1 Party held at London’s Natural History Museum for the hospital’s Heart and Lung Centre, and Pirelli donated, among other things, a wind tunnel tyre signed by Britain’s last two Formula One World Champions: Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. Red Bull principal Christian Horner, BBC F1 presenter Jake Humphrey and man about town Vernon Kay were among those in attendance.
Ling Long Tyres has funded automotive industry charity BEN’s Henley Regatta celebration at the Lynwood Care Home, near Ascot. The event was attended by residents of the Home, the staff, and their families and friends, who, as Ray Diggins (BEN’s Head of Marketing) said: “always like to get involved”. Harjeev Kandhari, chief executive of the Al Dobowi Group and Jorge Crespo, European general manager of Eskay Tyres also attended the event.
Automotive industry charity BEN has appointed Peter Cottle as head of business development. Cottle spent ten years in retail banking prior to over 30 in the automotive industry, where he specialised in retail and wholesale finance. He has championed the work of BEN throughout his career.
Makita, the power tool manufacturer, has chosen Breast Cancer Care as its first charity of the year. Makita hopes to raise £50,000 to support people affected by breast cancer. The firm chose Breast Cancer Care for their first partnership after several staff members were affected by the disease.
