During the event TyreSafe announced the fun, shall we say “suggestive” theme for this year’s Tyre Safety Month and presented case studies of previous Tyre Safety Month activities alongside an update from Highways England’s Stuart Lovatt. However, as interesting as this was, the results of TyreSafe’s most recent tread depth survey, showing that there are potentially up to 10 million illegal and dangerous tyres on Britain’s roads – around 27 per cent of the whole market – really stood out.
Thirty professionals from the transport and logistics industry battled stifling heat, rugged terrain and unforgiving altitudes to raise a staggering £133,000 for international development charity, Transaid – the largest sum ever raised for the organisation in a single challenge or event.
The cyclists pedalled an impressive 400km across Tanzania over five days in order to raise vital funds towards Transaid’s work developing safer and alternative transport systems, improving access to livelihoods and healthcare for people in Africa. Starting next to the famous Mount Kilimanjaro and ending at the beautiful Ngorongoro Crater, the participants faced steep inclines and overcame mental barriers, many pushing themselves further than they thought possible, for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
BEN, the automotive industry charity is extremely proud of their dedicated London to Paris 24 participants who cycled the 240 mile journey in less than 24 hours. So far, the team have raised over £25,500 for BEN with funds still coming in.
Brake, the road safety charity, is urging the government to show strong leadership in the face of the first calendar year increase in road casualties in 17 years. Automotive industry charity BEN will take part in the National Care Home Open Day on 19 June 2015. The idea behind the day is to encourage local people to visit care homes in their community and to work together to develop better relationships.
SMMT’s communications manager, Janet Wilkinson, has been awarded an MBE for services to the Motor Industry and Charity in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for 2015. Wilkinson, who has spent virtually all her career at the SMMT, has been responsible for many of the activities and events the organisation runs to help promote the industry to media and other stakeholders. She has also mentored dozens of young people who have gone on to enjoy successful careers in the industry.
BEN, the automotive industry charity is elated to announce that Kate Weaver, whose family has benefitted from BEN’s help, ran a 5km park run in under 40 minutes at Quarry Park in Shrewsbury only 18 months after being told that she might never walk again. So far, Weaver has raised over £800 with funds still coming in for BEN and Dr Gardner’s Charity for Nurses.
