Sun Tyres Expects 25 per cent Increase in Retread Demand

Sun Tyre Industries Sdn Bhd, a leading Malaysian retreaded tyre manufacturer, expects retread demand to go up by 20 to 25 this year. The company made the prediction on receiving the MS224:2005 certification on 21 June. Executive director, Steven Gan Seng Poe, said demand for retreaded tyres in Malaysia was always high and that the company was confident of meeting the demand as they planned to increase production at their new plant in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

The production at the plant would be raised to about 9,000 units a month by year-end compared to the current production of 2,000 units a month. According to local news source Bernama, the Seremban-based company currently produces 25,000 retreaded tyres a month, which are mostly used for commercial vehicles.

Yokohama’s U.S. Plant Gets Environmental Certification

(Akron/Tire Review) Yokohama Tire Corp.’s tire plant in Salem, Va., has received ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification. Yokohama said that all of plants in Japan have been ISO 14001 accredited since 1999 and the company’s plants worldwide are certified or in the process of becoming certified.

Bridgestone Recruiting for Hungarian Factory

Bridgestone Europe has begun recruiting employees for its new factory in Tatabánya, 35 miles west of Budapest. The facility is scheduled to commence trial runs and then volume production in the second half of 2007, following assembly of plant machinery in the spring.
The factory was built with the proceeds of a £125 million investment, and will supply Bridgestone’s European markets. An anticipated 8,000 passenger car and light truck tyres per day will be produced in Tatabánya from 2009 onwards.

Tip Top Launches Run-Flat Repair Kit

Less than a week after ATS Euromaster launched a national run-flat repair service, Rema Tip-Top has introduced a tyre repair kit specifically designed for the permanent repair of tread injuries to run-flat tyres. According to the company, extensive tests carried out by the German certification body TÜV confirmed the durability of the Rema Tip-Top Minicombi repair system when repairing run-flat tyres. The Minicombi tyre repair procedure (certificate 02109811 002) is designed to repair run-flats with either reinforced sidewalls or support rings without compromising safety.

Conti Moving R&D to Mt. Vernon

Continental Tire North America is moving its research and development department from its Charlotte, North Carolina to its non-unionised plant in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Construction company Ray Black and Sons is currently completing the 700 square metre addition to the plant.

The facility at Mt. Vernon is now Conti’s sole US tyre production centre following the closure of several other plants. Mt. Vernon workers have accepted some wage reductions in exchange for a promise of increased production and an upgrade of facilities. The plant has recently been awarded “Q1” Quality Certification by Ford and recognition of improved quality from Nissan.

Kitemark Take-up Increasing

The Kitemark Garage Services scheme – for servicing and repair of vehicles (PAS80) – has become the first to be accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). UKAS is the sole national accreditation body recognised by Government to assess, against internationally agreed standards, organisations – such as BSI – that provide certification, testing, inspection and calibration services. To achieve UKAS accreditation, BSI had to pass a rigorous audit to demonstrate its competence, impartiality and performance capability.

AIRP to Take Action Against Non-ECE-Certified Retreaders

There has not been any seismic shifts in the market since the UN-ECE regulations 108 and 109 were made mandatory in Europe on 13 September 2006. Many retreaders were already working according to these new regulations voluntary. Now, four week after the regulations came into effect, the Italian Tyre Retreaders Association AIRP has discussed ways of dealing with the black sheep in the Italien retreading industry and whether legel steps should be taken. There are currently 66 truck and passenger car tyre retreading plants in Italy which are operated by AIRP members.

UAE Tyre Rental Racket

Some unscrupulous dealers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have allegedly been running a tyre rental racket. According to the Gulf news report, drivers are able to hire tyres at a fraction of the cost of buying a new set in order to gain MOT-style certification. This deal is said to cost as little as 40 dirhams (around £5.90) to customers who use popular cars such as Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. Local police have publicly condemned the trade and warned that those involved will be prosecuted. Gulf News reported that 20 per cent of road accidents in the region are attributed to faulty or badly maintained tyres.

WRAP Launches Used Tyre Open Tender

An open tender has been launched by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) inviting bids which will continue the momentum of developing and extending the UK’s markets for used tyres. WRAP says its aim is to provide up to 100 per cent funding support for trial and demonstration projects using rubber from UK used tyres for a wide range of construction-related applications which will have already undergone proven research and development, but have yet to be commercialised.

Canadian GCR Retread Plants Get Quality Standards Certification

(Akron/Tire Review) Bridgestone/Firestone Canada’s GCR Tire Centers has earned ISO 9001:2000 certifications for five of its six medium truck retread plants. The company’s retreading facilities in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia; Moncton, New Brunswick; Sudbury, Ontario; Paradise, Newfoundland; and Farnham, Quebec, achieved the requirements of the international quality management system. The sixth – located in Quebec City, Quebec – is expected to receive its certification later this year. “We are proud of the dedication demonstrated by all of our plant personnel during the entire implementation process,” said Marcel Leclair, the company’s business manager for retread operations. “We are delighted to be able to offer our customers this added quality assurance.”

Also on the panel was Ted Turner, CNN Founder and philanthropist, David Abney, president of UPS International, and Giancarlo Fantappie, president and CEO of Ansaldobreda, Inc.

Cooper Appoints New Mickey Thompson Wheel Product Manager

(Akron/Tire Review) Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.’s Mickey Thompson brand division has hired Carl Robinson to the new position of wheel product manager. Robinson had been Weld Wheel Industries Inc.’s director of motorsports and president of Race Wheel Enterprises Inc. in Dania, Fla. Robinson has also helped develop various testing devices for wheel and tire assemblies and is a past member of the S.F.I. Wheel Certification Committee, Cooper said.

Hangzhou Yokohama Tire Secures ISO 14001

Yokohama’s Hangzhou Yokohama Tire Co. Ltd. Chinese subsidiary has secured ISO 14001 certification. The company achieved the standard in January, Yokohama reported. Established in December 2001 and financed by Yokohama Rubber (90 per cent) and YHI Holdings Pte, Ltd (10 per cent), Hangzhou Yokohama Tire manufactures and sells radial tyres for passenger cars.
