Phillips Carbon Black profits up

Phillips Carbon Black has announced its net profit in the year ended in September had jumped 244 per cent on the back of a 10 per cent growth in sales. A spokesman for Phillips Carbon Black said significant growth in carbon black offtake was expected next year. “We have reached an agreement with a leading tyre manufacturer for export of 25,000 tonnes of carbon black. We are negotiating with another tyre manufacturer for a similar deal,” he added. The company is raising the capacity of its Baroda plant from 18,000 tonnes at present, to 88,000 tonnes. The production capacity of its plant at Durgapur is being scaled up by 25,000 tonnes to 150,000 tonnes.

Amtel is sole holder of Voronezh Tire and Amtel-Siberia Tire Complex

Amtel Holding has become a sole owner of Voronezh Tire Plant and Amtel-Siberia Tire Complex. According to Amtel, it bought out a 25 per cent state-run stake in Voronezh Plant and purchased a similar stake in Amtel-Sibiria from the minor holders to take 100 per cent stock capital of both plants. Amtel has been consolidating assets since 2002. The target is to set up a single public company. Today Amtel owns 89 per cent of the Kirov Tire Works, 100 per cent of Khimvolokno Amtel-Kuzbass and 100 per cent of the carbon black plant at the Volgograd Works.

Indian Firm To Double Carbon Black Output

Hi-Tech Carbon of India is set to double output of carbon black at its factory at Gummipoondi. An investment of Rs 80 crore (US$17.5 million) will see annual production increase to 80,000 tonnes by next March. Half the current production of 40,000 tonnes goes to export.

Continental Carbon Lock Out Continues

The Paper, Allied-Industrial and Chemical Workers International Union (PACE) reported today that contract negotiations yesterday failed to end an almost two-year lockout of 86 union employees at Continental Carbon in Ponca City, Oklahoma. According to Ernie Anderson, PACE’s chief negotiator, Continental Carbon’s negotiators want union members to serve as contractors and bid against non-union firms for routine maintenance. “The company even insists that the union bids must be 30 per cent lower than other bids for union workers to perform the maintenance work,” said Anderson. Goodyear, one of the company’s largest customers, no longer purchases carbon black from Continental Carbon.PACE has warned customers, particularly tyre manufacturers, of the danger of using carbon black from Ponca City where less-experienced replacement workers and overworked managers have attempted to produce high quality carbon black. PACE has stated repeatedly, based on research from tyre experts, that defective or contaminated carbon black can cause tread separation.

Bridgestone To Build Thai Carbon Black Plant

Bridgestone is to invest 1.7 billion Thai Baht (36.2 million Euros) in a new plant to produce carbon black. The factory, which will be sited in Rayong, Thailand, will begin production next year, with an annual capacity of 40,000 tons. It will be operated by the subsidiary company Bridgestone Carbon Black Thailand Co. and it is thought that the majority of output will go for export.

U.K. Firm Buys Canadian Microwave Plant

Environmental Waste International Inc. has made its first sale of its reverse polymerisation tyre processing plant. It has sold its first plant to an un-named firm in the United Kingdom for an operation to be located there. The company has received a deposit of more than 1 million dollars against the purchase price of 10 million dollars. The plant should be commissioned within 18 months.Environmental Waste International’s system uses microwave energy to separate scrap tyres into carbon black, oil, steel and hydrocarbon gases. The plant can process 3,000 tyres per day. It reduces each 9kg tyre to about 3.5kg of carbon black and 1kg of steel. The plant can use the oil and hydrocarbon gases released to produce enough electricity to run the system. Excess electricity can be sold to the power grid.

Generation Power At Titan Technologies

Titan Technologies (Albuquerque/USA) has announced that its ability to generate electricity by using the gas and carbon black byproducts generated by its tyre recycling process has sparked considerable interest from tyre shredding operations across North America.Titan had been researching the use of its plants to generate electrical power. Titan addressing costs and developing scrubbers to eliminate emissions from combustion of the oil, gas and carbon black produced by the process. Once these costs have been determined, Titan will develop an electrical generation business pro forma for different locations. At this time, Titan believes that a TRTM plant is an economically viable electrical generation system. Ronald L. Wilder, Titan’s president, added, “All cities and countries have major waste tyre problems and most, if not all, will need additional electrical generation. There can be special benefits if additional power comes from recyclable waste tyres”.Titan’s current claim is that the BTU output of a Titan Technologies tyre recycling plant processing 100 tons of scrap tyres per day is almost 3 billion BTU/day in excess of the energy required to operate the recycling plant. This excess will generate approximately 20 mega watts of continuous electrical power.

Shares Drop On Carbon Black Probe

Share values at Cabot Corp and Phelps Dodge fell dramatically after the world’s largest suppliers of carbon black said regulators were investigating whether they conspired to fix the price of the substance used to make tyres. ”We’ve been approached by the European Union and Department of Justice and we are co-operating fully,” Bruce Richardson of Phelps Dodge said. Artificially high prices for carbon black would increase costs for tyre manufacturers which use it to strengthen their products. Cabot’s shares fell $1.50, or 5.8 percent, to $24.17 in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Phelps Dodge dropped $2.18, or 7.5 percent, to $26.72.

Pirelli Unveils Automatic Mixing System

Pirelli unveiled its automatic Continuous Compound Mixing system (CCM) which complements its MIRS tyre production system and allows extremely accurate and environmentally-friendly mixing of up to 40 components. Seven patents have been applied for, with the first one granted in North America. Together, says Pirelli, CCM and MIRS will mean “a new generation of tyres, with performance unimaginable up to now.”

Tyres2Oil Development For Germany

Advanced Recycling Sciences (ARS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Natur-Energie-Wertstoffrecycling Umwelt AG (NEW, Munich) to develop ARS Tires2Oil ™ technology in Germany. The arrangement will allow NEW to build a full scale facility by the second half of next year. NEW is negotiating with ARS to acquire a 5 per cent share of the new venture at Penkun. The process treats crumb rubber in a hydrocarbon-based solvent in thermodynamic conditions to depolymerise the rubber and recover carbon black and oil. The purified output will produce crude oil with a less than 15ppm sulphur content.

Official UK Launch Of Goodyear’s Greenest Ever Tyre

In London, Goodyear officially launched its GT3 passenger car tyre – the first tyre to incorporate new “BioTred” technology, in which carbon black and silica fillers are replaced by starch obtained from maize plants. Not only is the T-rated tyre more fuel efficient, says Goodyear, but because maize is a renewable resource and converts carbon dioxide to oxygen while it grows, the GT3 is claimed to be the most environmentally-friendly tyre ever. Goodyear released news of the new technology earlier this year, but this was the first time that the tyre had been shown to the UK press.

BioTRED For Ford Fiesta

Goodyear’s BioTRED tyre which uses corn starch filler instead of carbon black or silica, is to be offered as an OE fitting on the Ford Fiesta. The BioTRED tyre is manufactured at seven European locations and is the first tyre to be manufactured with a renewable sourced filler.

Price Increases In US Tyre Market

There are rumours in the market that the industry will raise tyre prices – maybe even this week – to cover increases in raw materials (rubber, oil, carbon black). As production capacities have been expanded during the last 24 months, it is doubted whether any increase will stick due to market pressure.

Analysts Bullish On Tyre Shares

Following a few months of indifferent performance, stock market analysts are meanwhile promoting tyre manufacturers’ shares as a good buy. The reasons for this optimism are that the rise in prices of raw materials (rubber, oil, carbon black) appears to have stopped, or at least slowed down, and that price increases announced in the USA are holding.

German Rubber Industry Growth

The German Rubber Association W.d.K. (Wirtschaftsverband der deutschen Kautschukindustrie) has announced that total sales of rubber goods increased 4.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2000. Sales of technical products rose 5.8 % and tyre sales increased 3.3 %. However, the W.d.K. continues to worry about increasing material costs (rubber, oil, carbon black).
