Vredestein launches Sportrac 5 in Budapest

Apollo Vredestein is in Budapest this week, as it launches two new UHP tyres under the Vredestein brand. The Sportrac 5 is the successor to the successful Sportrac 3, which won the ADAC 2011 summer tyre test. The Sportrac 5 is marketed on its quietness, stability and sportiness, offering excellent handling on both wet and dry surfaces. Its size range is designed to provide fitments on upper medium cars. The company notes that the name Sportrac 4 has not been used in order to prevent confusion with Vredestein’s all-season tyres.

Firestone run-flat range aimed at ‘value-oriented’ drivers

Vehicles fitted with run-flat tyres as original equipment, such as the various members of the BMW range, are now entering the used car market in increasing numbers and being purchased by drivers with more limited budgets than the first owners. To cater for these motorists’ tyre needs, Bridgestone has launched its first Firestone-branded run-flat for the European market. Called the Firehawk SZ90µ RFT (Run-Flat Technology), the replacement market tyre is available in six sizes for 16- to 18-inch, 40 to 55 series, and features a reinforced sidewall rubber construction for continued safe driving if the tyre deflates or suffers a total loss of pressure.

Vredestein launches UHP tyres in Budapest “takeover”

Following Apollo Vredestein’s launch of the Apollo Aspire 4G at Geneva, the tyre manufacturer is “taking over” Hungarian capital Budapest for another major launch between 25 March and 2 April. Vredestein is introducing two new summer tyres – the Ultrac Vorti and the Sportrac 5 – in a grand event that will see major sites in the city, including the five-star Four Seasons Hotel and the Museum of Applied Arts, embellished with Vredestein branding. On Sunday 25 March, the brand announced its arrival with a convoy of 35 vehicles with Vredestein branding, while several mega-billboards in the city centre draw attention to its week-long residence.

Double Star embarks on “Rainbow” tyre production

At the end of 2011 Double Star Tires based in Qingdao, Shandong province, China announced plans to produce a range of multi-coloured tyres. According to local news reports, Double Star has dared to differ from the overwhelming trend towards manufacturing black tyres having developed a patented process to make tyres of any colour. This range has been appropriately dubbed “Rainbow” and is set for imminent market release.

Heuver to display Aeolus pcr range at Reifen 2012

As well as being represented by Kings Road Tyres in the UK, the Aeolus brand is distributed by Heuver Tyrewholesale in a number of markets on the continent. This year the brand will be present at the Dutch wholesaler’s stand and also have its own show presence, and during Reifen the Chinese manufacturer will not only show its latest products from its established truck and OTR tyre lines – the company’s new range of passenger car tyres will also be on display.

Nokian's record breaking electric performance on ice

Test driver Janne Laitinen from Nokian Tyres reached a speed of 252.09 km/h (156.64 mph) in the E-RA electric car on the ice of Lake Ukonjärvi in Inari, Finland. The record, achieved on 17 March by Nokian and the Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences' high-tech E-RA (Electric RaceAbout) vehicle, is unique.

To retain a competitive edge in such changeable conditions requires flexibility; and this is precisely the quality that Dutch wholesaler Van den Ban prides itself in possessing. Flexibility in its various forms was a key theme when Tyres & Accessories recently spoke with commercial manager Cyril Versteeg and Kees Nieuwland, who is responsible for the company’s UK and Ireland sales during a recent visit to the company’s headquarters in Hellevoetsluis, not far from the major port of Rotterdam.

Russia the key driver of Nokian’s growth

In its 2011 annual report, Nokian Tyres has singled Russia out as the company’s strongest growth area. Reporting rising sales in all Nokian’s key regions – the Nordic markets, Central Europe and Russia – and growing market share in the last two of these, president and CEO Kim Gran stated that “as expected, this development was strongest in Russia, which, boosted by the car business, represented approximately one-half of our growth.”

Conti to introduce winter EV tyre

Starting in autumn 2013, Continental will produce a winter tyre for electric cars. The company previewed this tyre, the Conti.eContact Winter, at the Geneva Motor Show and shared that it can cut rolling resistance considerably compared with its standard equivalent. “The 20-inch size was decided upon due to rolling resistance and wear criteria,” commented Alexander Bahlmann, head of media and public relations for Continental’s Tires division. “It was the best size in comparison to a standard winter tyre; rolling resistance has been reduced by 25 per cent compared with a 16-inch tyre.”

Poland – most likely site for Apollo’s new factory?

Speaking at the launch of the Aspire 4G high performance tyre in Geneva, Apollo Tyres Ltd chairman and managing director Onkar Singh Kanwar reiterated the tyre maker’s commitment to European consumers. “While European companies are looking east, your company, Apollo, is focusing on Europe, and Europe will remain central to our focus,” he stated. “We will keep investing in production facilities, in technology, development and product launches to ensure that the best and most effective products are brought to you. Apollo will accelerate its growth momentum over the years to come.”

Multistrada investing in rubber supply, capacity expansion

Almost a year ago, PT Multistrada Arah Sarana Tbk announced plans to ensure a reliable supply of raw materials through the acquisition of up to around 30,000 hectares of rubber plantation land. In the end the tyre maker purchased 33,800 hectares in Kalimantan, Indonesia for around Rp3 trillion (£209 million) through its subsidiary PT Multistrada Agro Internasional. During a press conference held in Jakarta on 11 March, company president Pieter Tanuri shared details of this acquisition, stating that this year Multistrada aims to plant up to 1,000 hectares of rubber trees there, a project the firm has budgeted Rp398 billion (£27.7 million) for; 26 per cent of this will come from the proceeds of a recent rights issue. This is expected to be ready for harvest in the next five years.

European Ecopia range now covers most popular models, says Bridgestone

Since its European launch in 2010, the Bridgestone Ecopia EP150 line-up has continued to grow. The Japanese tyre maker reports that the EP150 is now available in 55 and 65 series sizes to fit a wide range of compact and medium-sized passenger cars with 14 to 16-inch rim sizes. The EP150, together with the Turanza ER300 Ecopia, forms the basis of an Ecopia product portfolio that offers sizes to fit most popular car models on European roads.

European-focus: Apollo Aspire 4G unveiled

Less than three years ago, Apollo Tyres acquired Dutch tyre maker Vredestein and set about developing a company that draws upon both firms’ strengths. Now, at this week’s Geneva Motor Show, Apollo Vredestein showed the world what its Netherlands and India-based research and development departments are capable of jointly achieving; the very first tyre to come out of this international collaboration – the Apollo Aspire 4G – was given its official debut on 7 March.

Dunlop launches latest race-inspired rubber – full report

At the end of February Dunlop announced the launch of its Sport Maxx Race and Sport Maxx RT products at Spain’s Ascari Race track. Designed to help some of the world’s fastest cars perform, Dunlop says the Race iteration will be fitted to key models such as the Mercedes SLS and C63 AMG Black Series, Audi’s TT RS and R8, the Porsche 911 GT3 and the BMW M5. The RT is aimed at original equipment manufacturers that are introducing 17 and 18-inch rims ahead of 16 inches; the Sport Maxx RT is the brand’s attempt to capitalise on the market expansion in these sizes on leading performance brands such as Audi, Maserati, Mini, BMW, Jaguar, and Mercedes AMG.
