Nissan commits to Sunderland plant despite Brexit

Nissan Motor Company Ltd. has committed to producing the next Qashqai crossover vehicle in Sunderland. Executives had warned that this may not happen following the UK’s decision to leave the European Union. However, not only has the company received satisfactory assurances to continue with production of the Qashqai for the next few years (the next Qashqai model is expected to be made in 2018 or 2019). Nissan also confirmed that it will add production of the next X-Trail model at its Sunderland as well in something of a surprise move.

Pirelli on track for a 2018 IPO

On 19 October the board of directors of Pirelli & C. S.p.A. met in Milan to discuss the integration of Pirelli Industrial and Aeolus, along with plans for a 2018 IPO, a year earlier than expected.

As a result of the meeting the board, approved the firm’s 2016-2018 industrial plan, including its vision up to 2020 for Pirelli consumer.

Goodyear Dunlop retains Police contract

Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK Ltd is continuing its partnership with the UK Police Force that sees the tyre manufacturer supply, service and maintain the government-operated fleet. The news means the firm has been supplying tyres to the police for 15 consecutive years. The latest deal adds a further four years to the total.

Shangdong Hengyu making graphene tyres

Shangdong Hengyu Technology has become the latest tyre manufacturer to announce that it is making tyres based on the Nobel Prize-winning material graphene. Other firms using graphene in tyres include bicycle tyremaker Vitorria and fast-growing Chinese manufacturer Sentury Tire.

According to the company supplying Hengyu with Graphene (The Sixth Element Materials Technology), Shangdong Hengyu has developed “tyre formulations” that the companies say demonstrates the positive impact of graphene on the performance of tyres.

GM acknowledges quality at three Bridgestone plants

Bridgestone’s Bethune, France; Burgos, Spain; and Poznań, Poland tyre manufacturing plants were honoured at the General Motors 2015 Supplier Quality Excellence Awards. The quality managers of the three plants accepted the awards at the ceremony held at GM Europe headquarters in Russelsheim, Germany on 16 September 2016.

Ogilvie Fleet chooses Michelin CrossClimate tyres for mobile optician

Ogilvie Fleet has teamed up with Kwik Fit to switch its customer Complete Price Eyewear to Michelin CrossClimate tyres. Before moving 93 Honda Civic and Volvo V40 and V60 cars in the mobile optician’s fleet to CrossClimate tyres, Ogilvie Fleet put two sets to the test for six months on vehicles coping with the worst of Britain’s weather.

Jim Hannah, operations director at Ogilvie Fleet, said: “CrossClimate tyres are a fantastic choice for the UK fleet market, as they can handle anything the country’s notoriously unpredictable weather can throw at us. The tyres [eliminate] the need to switch from summer to winter fitments, and cuts both the cost of employing a ‘tyre hotel’ and the associated fitting fees – which is particularly advantageous for companies with vehicles based all over the country…”

Michelin invests in Iberian tyre distribution

Michelin has opened a new distribution centre for the Iberian peninsula following investment of some 32.5 million euros. The goal of the logistics centre located in Illescas, near Toledo in Spain is to optimise logistics performance in Spain, Andorra and Portugal, not to mention the Balearics, the Canaries, the Azores and Madeira.

Jaguar Classic partners with Pirelli to supply new P Zero XJ220 tyre package

Jaguar Classic has announced a partnership with Pirelli to develop a new tyre package for the classic XJ220 sports car. Featuring a bespoke P Zero design the tyre maintains the look of the original P Zero, but is updated using Pirelli’s latest compounds and technologies. This includes internal damping within the tyre to even out shocks, lessen noise, and provide more precise control while increasing comfort. Pirelli’s P Zero ultra-high performance range continues to be a part of top level motorsport, like Formula One and GT racing, for which the XJ220 concept was originally developed.

Giti Tire launches Giti PCR brand in Germany, debut at Automechanika Frankfurt

Following up the European launch of Giti branded truck tyres at Reifen 2016, Giti Tire has now launched a new flagship Giti branded passenger car and SUV summer portfolio for the German market. The range, which consists of four “premium performance” tyres, has been developed and tested exclusively throughout Europe by the company’s Hannover-based R&D Centre. Giti stated that there were “no plans to replace the GT Radial brand”, previously positioned as its global flagship, in Europe when the commercial range was launched. According to the manufacturer, this remains the case, with the Giti PCR range designed to complement its existing GT Radial, Primewell and Runway brands; Giti will offer selected sizes aimed at specific vehicle segments.

August a good month for Western Europe car sales

The Western European passenger car market enjoyed a strong month in August in what is traditionally one of the quietest months of the sales year, posting a reasonably strong uplift in August of 9.7 per cent y/y to 776,861 units, according to the latest IHS Automotive Western European forecast.

It should be taken into account that most markets benefited from one extra working day during the month, which is also traditionally one of the quietest sales months in Western Europe as a result of the August holiday period, with a seasonally adjusted figure in the region of 5 per cent.

Bridgestone is working with Don Law XJ220 in the UK to develop a new generation of tyres for the legendary Jaguar XJ220.

The original collaboration in the development of the tyres for the XJ220 is well documented. However, tyres of the size required for the car went out of production some years ago.

Falken tyres OE on Skoda Superb

Czech car maker Skoda, part of the VW Group since 1991, has chosen Falken Ecorun for its Superb saloon model. The most popular mid-size car is now fitted with Falken‘s Ziex ZE914 Ecorun tyres as standard.

The new Superb features a Euro 6 engine and is up to 30 per cent more economical on fuel. Falken believes Skoda’s choice of Ziex Ecorun rubber as its OEM tyres, supplied by Falken Tyre Europe to the production facility at Kvasiny in the Czech Republic in size 215/55R17 94W ZE914 A EC fits this philosophy.

Harjeev Kandhari: Tyre quality gap is closing and sales methods are changing

In a recent op-ed Harjeev Kandhari, CEO of tyre company Zenises, reflected on possible changes in the way tyres are sold in the future. Kandhari’s first point is that the quality gap between brands that are long-established in the market (the so-called ‘legacy’ brands) and more recent introductions, such as Zenises’ own Z-Tyre, is shrinking fast. There has traditionally been a large difference in price between legacy and the newer tyres, but Kandhari believes that the small differences in performance and technology mean that this gap is no longer appropriate.

UK car manufacturing continues to grow

UK car manufacturing achieved its 12th consecutive month of growth in July, rising 7.6 per cent to 126,566 units compared with the same month in 2015, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Year-to-date production grew 12.3 per cent to 1,023,723 units – the best performance since 2000, and the first time in 12 years volumes have been greater than one million in the first seven months.

Demand was up both at home and abroad with a 14.1 per cent increase in output for the domestic market and exports up 6.0 per cent to 101,184 units. More than three quarters of a million cars built this year are destined for overseas markets, a 77.8 per cent share of total production volumes.
