Following the publication of the SMMT’s UK monthly automotive manufacturing figures for June, Chris Bosworth, director of strategy at Close Brothers Motor Finance, suggests that the current growth spurt may be coming to a close. The extent to which this will be affected by Brexit remains to be seen, Bosworth adds, though it coincides with what he calls an “inflection point” for the UK car market.
UK car makers reported their 11th consecutive month of growth in June, according to figures released by SMMT. Production grew 10.4 per cent to 158,641 units – the highest level for the month since 1998, when volumes reached 172,232.
John Leech, head of automotive at KPMG, has commented on the latest automotive manufacturing figures published by the SMMT, suggesting that UK manufacturing will approach 10 per cent growth this year.
There is strong evidence Indonesia will eventually replace Thailand as the main automotive production hub in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), according to Markus Scherer, global automotive sector leader at Ipsos Business Consulting. This could have major implications for automotive manufacturers and suppliers as well as policy planners in both countries, Scherer said.
In 2015 the British car manufacturing industry made more cars than any year since 2005 when 1,595,697 vehicles were produced, according to figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Data released on 21 January shows that production increased 3.9 per cent on 2014, with output at 1,587,677 overtaking pre-recession levels for the first time.
