Carbon Black Shortage Creating Headaches in India

The New Indian Express newspaper has reported a “severe crisis” looming over India’s tyre and tread rubber manufacturers. According to the newspaper, carbon black supplies are critically low and the four major Indian manufacturers of the substance lack the capacity to meet domestic market demand. This problem is compounded by allegations that India’s Ministry of Commerce is preventing the importation of carbon black to compensate for this shortfall.

A number of factories are said to have been idled as a result of this shortage, which The New Indian Express attributes to a Ministry of Commerce decision to restrict carbon black imports if the landed cost is less than RS 80 (£1.00) per kilogram, markedly more than the current Indian price.

Falcon Tyres Divesting to Remain Listed

A chunk of Ruia Group company Falcon Tyres will be sold in order to increase ouput at its factory in Mysore, eastern India, and to ensure its promoters shareholder remains below the 75 per cent required to stay listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. The share, according to Indian media, is to be sold to a private equity firm for Rs 1 billion (£12.6 million).

“We are in the process of preparing our presentation and hope to be through with the placement within the next two months,” Falcon Tyres chairman Pawan Kumar Ruia told the Hindu Business Line. Ruia reports that the promoters’ share in the company went up to 86 per cent following the recently concluded open offer requiring either a public issue or private placement.

“The air we breathe consists largely of nitrogen, oxygen and water. The oxygen and water contained in compressed air has a negative impact on tyres and will influence handling, fuel efficiency, tyre life and rim condition, the environment and your own safety. The solution is to inflate tyres with a high concentration of nitrogen. Tyres filled with nitrogen last longer, are safer and more eco-friendly. In the future, every driver will have nitrogen inflated tyres,” claimed product manager at Parker Filtration and Separation B.V., Robin Biemans.

A new design and engineering project has seen the company produce a new nitrogen tyre inflation tool. It can be used to inflate car, motorcycle, trailer and van tyres. The TyreSaver 3.0, describes Parker, is a robust, lightweight, mobile, nitrogen tyre inflator for the automotive industry, with low investment costs, making the company certain that it has a high sales and profit margin potential. “This workshop tool can be connected to a compressor and automatically generates nitrogen from compressed air; a simple concept that is, above all, inexpensive. This means that the investment will pay for itself in no time at all. The TyreSaver 3.0 is fitted with an exchangeable membrane cartridge that will operate for thousands of tyre inflations. The patent is currently pending,” continued Robin Biemans.

Sentaida Opens New China Tyre Plant

Sentaida International has opened its new tyre plant, Cenchelyn Tire Co. in Qindao, China. The building of the “state of the art” plant was reported on Tyrepress.com when it was two-thirds of the way through its development in September last year.

The marketer said the new plant features “state-of-the-art machinery from Germany, Japan, and the Netherlands.” Sentaida said that in 2010 the plant’s production capacity will increase to 6 million tyres with a focus on the 17- to 30-inch UHP segment. Company sources suggested last year that the total production would touch 10 million units in 2013.

The manufacturer concluded that as a result of the new facility, it will offer the Delinte UHP brand exclusively throughout the US, and offer customers the opportunity to create their own personal private brands. (Tire Review/Akron)

Goodyear Cutting Philippines Tyre Jobs

Goodyear has announced that it is to close its Philippines tyre plant, cutting 83 per cent of its staff within the country in the process, reports The Wall Street Journal. The reduced demand and the high costs of running the facility mean that the Las Pinas plants products “are not competitive in the marketplace,” according to Pierre Cohade, Goodyear Asia-Pacific regional president.

The closure will happen at the end of the current quarter, with 500 out of the 600 Philippines workers laid off. According to reports, the company’s sales and marketing departments will remain unaffected. As previously noted on Tyrepress.com, Goodyear plans to cut much of its worldwide capacity over the next two years, and this latest closure will account for 2 million of the 15 million units of annual production due to be shed. The Wall Street Journal report concludes that Goodyear will record approximately $20 million in charges as a consequence of the closure.

Michelin to Launch First 295/60R22.5 Multi-Purpose Tyre

In August 2009, Michelin will introduce the market’s first 295/60R22.5-size multi-purpose tyre – the Michelin X MultiWay XD for truck drive axles. With the new tyre, comments Michelin, drivers of large-capacity commercial vehicles in Europe will be able to travel safely on all types of road and in all weather conditions.

The tyres that equip large-capacity and car-carrier trucks are confronted with a range of challenges, the French tyre major notes. They must be able to travel thousands of kilometres on motorways in summer and winter, access loading areas on national and smaller roads, and sometimes make city deliveries on traffic-congested streets. At the same time, trucking companies need to be able to carry heavier loads, reduce delivery times and optimise costs, while maintaining superior safety performance.

JK Tyre Achieves “Excellent Performance” in Quarter

During the first quarter of the current financial year JK Tyre & Industries Ltd. recorded “an excellent performance,” the company’s vice-chairman and managing director, Dr. Raghupati Singhania, noted. According to Dr. Singhania, this positive performance took the form of “all round cost reduction measures, better operating efficiencies, productivity and richer product mix.”

During the three months from April to June, the company achieved nets sales of Rs 8.98 billion (£112.4 million) and operating profit of Rs 1.07 billion (£13.4 million). The unaudited results show pre-tax profit to be Rs 620 million (£7.76 million).

Ontario Announces Incentives to Buy, Drive Electric Cars

The Ontario government has reportedly announced rebates of up to $10,000 to people who buy plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles after 1 July 2010. Premier Dalton McGuinty said his government aims to have one out of every 20 vehicles driven in Ontario electrically powered by 2020. The size of the rebate will depend on the vehicle’s battery capacity.

Local news sources quote automotive analyst Dennis DesRosiers said the incentive plan isn’t well thought through: “The fact they are offering such a high upfront incentive is an admission that there is high risk for this technology,” Mr. DesRosiers said. “Years before the vehicles are available they’re putting a bribe of $10,000 in the market place and the only reason they do that is because they anticipate they aren’t going to sell.” DesRosiers said the government would have been further ahead if it followed the lead of the U.S., which has invested $25-billion in a fund to promote electric battery technology. Century Textiles Resumes Rayon Tyre Yarn Production

Following a half-year pause, India’s Century Textiles & Industries Ltd has resumed the production of rayon tyre yarn at its factory in Kalyan, Maharashtra state. Production had been suspended in February due to market conditions, and the decision to resume production on July 1 means that overall annual production capacity will fall about 12 per cent, as opposed to the previously estimated 25 per cent. The company states, however, that ongoing market conditions may necessitate further decisions being taken.

Trade Group Launch Trademaster T1035

Trademaster recently launched the T1035, hydraulic, two-post car lift, which the company believes will “take the market by storm.” Trade Group spokesman Terry Bullworthy explained: “The Trademaster T1035 is…[an] open top, base type lift, with a 3.5 tonne lifting capacity that has been designed and developed specifically for Trade Group. Importantly, it is has ‘traceable CE approval’ and is manufactured and built to our exacting standards to ensure that safety, quality and reliability are paramount. Lithium-ion Battery Development Wins Award for Conti

Continental claims the lithium-ion batteries it has developed offer significantly greater storage capacity compared with the nickel-metal hydride battery technology still currently used in hybrid vehicles. The battery’s energy density is said to be around 30 per cent and its power to size ratio some 50 percent greater, while still retaining its compact dimensions. Development work on this unit, which saw its series production debut in the latest Mercedes-Benz S 400 BlueHYBRID, took place at Continental’s Nuremberg, Germany facility, and the site now has a production capacity of 15,000 units per annum. Recently Conti’s Powertrain Division and its Hybrid & Electric Vehicles business unit were acknowledged for the battery’s development and series introduction with an award from a logistics and transports association located in the factory’s local region.

Thai Retread Plant to Boost Bridgestone’s Asian Activities

Asian markets hold great potential for retreaders. To boost sales within this region and develop its solutions business in Japan, Asia and China, Bridgestone is investing some 5.2 billion yen (£34.7 million) in building a new precure retreading plant in Thailand. Construction at the 43,600 square metre site, located approximately 60 kilometres southeast of Bangkok, begins in July 2009 and the facility is scheduled to enter service in November 2010. The plant will employ around 100 staff when production commences and by the second half of 2013 capacity is anticipated to reach 30 tons per day.

Apollo Oragadam Greenfield Facility in Operation by November

Indian media sources reports production at Apollo Tyres Oragadam Greenfield facility near Chennai will enter production by November 2009. The plant, which will produce both passenger car and commercial vehicle radials, will have an 8,000 tyres per day capacity.

DailyDepot to Promote New Designs; e-Commerce

Booth 2105 in Hall 2 will belong to DailyDepot Inc., a wheel production division under China Southern Motor Group. Products cover alloy wheel for passenger cars, steel wheel for passenger cars and steel wheel for commercial vehicles. The company has an annual production capacity of 5 million piece alloy wheels and 9 million piece steel wheels. It has in-house test labs and tooling work-shop, with teams to provide service from scratch, R&D to production to logistical services. Moreover, the company says it can support EDI and JIT system too.

Its experience includes the joint-development of new product and supply chain management, with customers including China Chery, China BYD, Audi, Ford, India Tata, and many other prestige after-market brands in United States and EU. Sykes-Pickavant Launches Pneumatic Wheel Lifter

Sykes-Pickavant has announced its new Pneumatic Wheel Lifter, which the company says helps to comply with regulations regarding the working environment and safety in the workplace. It is – says Sykes-Pickavant – particularly useful for larger SUV, 4WD and Van wheels and tyre.

Features include the ability to lift wheels in less than ten seconds with its all in one continuous movement, stopping precisely at the desired position, the wheels rest on rollers making it easy to turn the wheel until the correct position is found and it has an additional compressed air outlet to connect an air wrench with free access to wheel nuts.

In addition to the lifter, the company has announced a wheel trolley, specifically for mounting and dismounting large wheels on SUVs, 4WDs, vans and trucks. It has rotating rollers make it easy to turn the wheel until the correct position is found, with the rollers able to be fitted in 3 positions for different wheel sizes.
