Ceat radial production getting a boost in Sri Lanka

Production capacity at Ceat Kelani Holdings’ site in Kelaniya, Sri Lanka will rise by almost 70 per cent following the entry into operation of a new plant dedicated to passenger car and SUV radial production. When the new tyre building machines and curing presses start production in April, CEAT Kelani will increase its radial tyre building and curing capacity from 23,000 tyres per month to 39,000. The facility has been established through an investment of Rs 600 million (£2.8 million).

INSA and Bandamatic launch Smart Way approved retread compound

Industrias Negromex S.A. de C.V. (INSA), a subsidiary of Grupo KUO and Bandamatic announced that they jointly developed a truck tyre retread compound that meets US EPA Smart Way requirements for class eight truck tractor unit and trailer tyres at the start of 2014.

Lanxess post results for “challenging” 2013

German specialty chemicals company Lanxess AG reports that its sales decreased 8.7 per cent year-on-year in 2013, to €9.1 billion, and it says this decline is primarily attributable to lower selling prices in its Performance Polymers business segment due to lower raw material prices, and to the “challenging competitive situation.” On the back of increasing production-related costs and negative currency effects, EBITDA pre-exceptionals decreased 39.9 per cent year on year to €735 million, which was within Lanxess’ guidance range of €710 million to €760 million. Lanxess says a slight increase in volumes was unable to compensate for the decline in earnings. The Group’s EBITDA margin pre exceptionals fell to 8.9 per cent from 13.4 per cent in 2012.

Uniwheels 2013 revenues up 5.8 per cent to 338.3 million euros

Leading wheelmaker Uniwheels Group reports that it managed to both increase revenues 5.8 per cent and stabilise the company’s overall business in full-year 2013 results published today (24 March 2014). According to the company, the business’s growth came largely thanks to the “very positive” development of the firm’s Automotive Division, which focuses on supplying the OEM business and grew 12 per cent in 2013. In addition, the successful implementation of cost-cutting measures in the administration of the business is also said to have had a positive impact.

Waste tyre exemptions reach record levels

Registered exemptions for the storage of old tyres have reached record levels in England and Wales. The concern is that as the number of exempt sites increases, the authorities’ capacity to deal with and properly police them is stretched. According to the Tyre Recovery Association, since 2012 the association has been warning Ministers of the potential danger posed by weak supervision of exempt sites. TRA representatives explained that exemptions are easy and cheap to register but may pose “a looming threat to the environment where they are unpoliced”.

As in former president of Bridgestone Commercial Solutions, Kurt Danielson. In addition to this promotion, Danielson has also assumed the position of senior vice-president at Bridgestone Americas.

JiangXi Black Cat inaugurates a further carbon black plant

Last September, German chemical company Lehmann & Voss and its ‘Luvomaxx’ business unit signed an exclusive sales agreement with China’s Jiangxi Black Cat Carbon Black, giving it exclusive distribution rights in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. Luvomaxx business unit head Karl-Heinz Teschke recently returned from China, and has reported on the entry into service of JiangXi Black Cat’s eight carbon black facility.

Evonik inaugurates Thailand silica expansion

The project to expand Evonik Industries’ production of precipitated silica at its facility in Thailand is complete and officially opened on 14 March. The company says it invested a ‘lower double-digit’ figure in the expansion project, and while it hasn’t indicated the new capacity at the Maptaphut (Rayong Province) site, Evonik’s global capacity for precipitated silica, fumed silica, and matting agents now stands at around 500,000 tonnes. As well as supplying the tyre and automotive industries, Evonik will ship its precipitated silica to customers in the food, animal feed and paint and coatings sectors.

Key customers approve Starco alloy wheel range

No names have been mentioned, but Starco says some of the largest OEM trailer manufacturers have selected and approved its new Starco 5Jx13 alloy wheel for their products – predominantly on horse boxes and boat trailers. Starco developed its alloy wheel range in close cooperation with these OEM customers in order to develop an end product that satisfies each firm’s personal taste and style.

Brembo revenues, profits up in 2013

Brake manufacturer Brembo S.p.A. has posted positive results for 2013 despite an 11.2 per cent drop in net profit during the final quarter of the year. The company’s revenues grew 12.8 per cent to €1.6 billion in 2013 while EBITA rose 23.5 per cent to €212.1 million, with a margin of 13.5 per cent. EBIT increased 35.6 per cent to €121.4 million, with a margin of 7.8 per cent. Net profit rose 14.4 per cent year-on-year to €89.0 million in 2013.

The company says these offer the optimal solution for increasing profitability within agricultural operations at a time when increasingly large land areas are being worked and demands placed upon harvesters and tractors are growing.

Linglong Thailand tyre factory up and running

Five weeks after its first high performance tyre was produced at the facility, Shandong Linglong Tyre Co. Ltd has inaugurated the initial phase of its ‘LLIT (Thailand) consumer tyre plant. The Chinese tyre maker’s first overseas project was opened on 22 February in the presence of approximately 500 guests from 180 countries. Upon the pressing of a ‘starting ball’ by Linglong Tyre president Wang Feng and six guests of honour, including Chinese ambassador to China Ning Fukui and Surender Singh Kandahari, president of the Al Dobowi Group, the production line stirred to life, marking the plant’s official entry into service.

Kumho, Nexen OE for Kia electric car

Two of South Korea’s three tyre makers have developed tyres specifically for fitment on the Soul EV, the first electric car produced by Kia. The Korean manufacturer says Kumho Tire and Nexen Tire have developed low rolling resistance 205/60R16 tyres for the vehicle, which debuts at the Geneva Motor Show this week. These reduce rolling resistance by ten per cent without impacting on ride comfort, handling, NVH or braking distance, says Kia.

Yokohama inaugurates first plant in India

On 22 February, the official opening ceremony for Yokohama India’s Bahadurgarh plant was held in the presence of regional and company dignitaries. Trial production has already begun at the plant ahead of a start of commercial manufacture in the second half of this year.
