Hangzhou Zhongce to make tyres for Cooper

Cooper Tire & Rubber has signed an agreement with Hangzhou Zhongce, whereby the Chinese manufacturer will produce 250,000 – 350,000 radial medium truck tyres (RMTs) a year. Moulds and other equipment are being transferred to China from Cooper’s plant at Albany, Georgia, where all of Cooper’s RMTs are currently manufactured. Albany makes 25,000 tyres daily, of which 1,200 are RMTs and the plant employs 1,500 workers. The Chinese-made tyres will be produced under Cooper’s brand names and will be manufactured according to Cooper’s technical specifications.

Metro Tyres Predicts Turnover Growth

Indian two-wheeler tyre producer Metro Tyres predicts a 10 per cent growth in turnover this fiscal year to 3.3 billion Rupees (US$72 million) and five billion Rupees ($109.9 m) in the next three years, on the back of its technical alliance with Continental AG. Metro will also invest 200 million Rupees (44.4 m) to double production at its factory in Ludhiana to a monthly capacity of 100,000 tyres and tubes. The Indian domestic two-wheeler tyre market is estimated to be worth 10 billion Rupees ($219.5 million) annually.

Apollo Tyres Signs Memorandum Of Understanding For New Plant

In India, Apollo Tyres has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to set up a tyre manufacturing plant at Vadodara (previously known as Baroda). The project entails an investment of six billion Rupees (112.7 million Euro) but details of product types, capacity etc. are not known.

TPMS creates 200 jobs in Antrim

Tyre technology firm Schrader Electronics has announced that it is to build a new factory at Carrickfergus in Antrim (Northern Ireland), which will create 200 jobs.

Continental Invests 74 Million Euro in Czech Republic

Continental is set to invest 74 million Euro in building a plant on the Barum Continental site in Otrokovice, in the Czech Republic. Expected annual capacity will be three million tyres, mostly high performance products for the OE market. The project will mean the creation of 430 jobs over the next decade and a new company, wholly-owned by Continental, will be incorporated to manage the project.

Goodyear invests 30 million dollars in India

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company will invest 30 million US dollars to ease the debt burden of its Indian arm. The funds would be invested through the external commercial borrowing route in Goodyear India to retire high cost debts in favour of low cost borrowings. “India is an important market for Goodyear. We continue to seek ways to introduce tyre technology,” said Antonio Canallini, chairman and managing director, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, India. The joint venture company Goodyear South Asia Tyres Ltd. has recently augmented production capacity by 25 per cent at its Aurangabad facility.

Goodyear claims to achieve flexibility, cost goals with USWA Pact

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has stated that its new labour contract with the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) meets the operational flexibility and cost-savings goals established prior to the negotiations. “Our goal for these negotiations was to achieve what some thought was impossible: a fair agreement that contributed approximately 1 billion dollars in cost savings and cost avoidance over its three-year term without a work stoppage,” said Robert J. Keegan, Goodyear chairman and chief executive officer.

New Pirelli Plant in Brazil

Pirelli has opened its new Feira de Santana factory in Bahia, Brazil. With a primary investment that amounts to about 120 million US dollars, the plant has 32,000 square metres of constructed area. The initial daily production is of to 2,500 high performance radial tyres, which will be destined to the domestic and Latin-American markets, as well as the American and European ones. In 2005, when the factory will be at full operating capacity, approximately 7,500 tyres will be manufactured a day. On a second phase, investments of more than 80 million US dollars are already proposed, which will allow the increase of the capacity of production to 13 thousand tyres a day.

Continental is still bleeding in its North American tyre business

According to unofficial statements the Continental corporate group will pile up a three digit million loss with its North American tyre business this year. This heats up the speculation about the future of Continental’s problem-child, General Tire. A year ago, the German board is said to have even considered the sale of its truck tyre business. This plan had to be put aside because of a lack of potential buyers. Under the leadership of Manfred Wennemer Continental has positively strengthened its earning capacity, has reduced dept quickly and massively and is now capable for new acquisitions if there should be an attractive opportunity.

Hyosung to invest 110 million US dollars in China

The Hyosung Corporation has announced that it plans to invest 110 million US dollars in building a steel cord plant with annual production capacity of 33,600 tons in Qingdao, China. The joint venture with the Qingdao administration will be named Hyosung Steel Cord Qingdao.

The company is planning to inject an initial 50 million US dollars by September next year to produce 16,800 tons of steel cord annually. The investment is being driven by the growing demand by Chinese tyre manufacturers and the country’s expanding auto market.
“When the new plant is completed, Hyosung’s steel cord business will expand to make up 7 percent of the global market and 10 percent of the mainland Chinese market,” the company explained.

Bridgestone Fire “Will Impact On Earnings”

Although the fire at Bridgestone’s factory in Kuroiso City is now under control, the after-effects are only now becoming apparent. Production has been halted indefinitely until the extent of the damage has been assessed. Spokeswoman Setsuko Ozaki, quoted on the Automotive News website, said “we have no idea when production will resume or how big a blow the fire will have on our earnings, but with an incident this big, there’s bound to be some impact.” Analysts suggest any impact on earnings would be small, but this didn’t prevent Bridgestone shares falling seven per cent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange at one point, against a market that rose two per cent overall. Shares in rival tyre manufacturers Yokohama and Sumitomo Rubber Industries rose by more than five per cent.

Superior Industries Warning On 3Q Figures

Superior Industries International has warned that operating results for the third quarter will be below previous estimates. While turnover is satisfactory, SII has experienced “significant one-time expenses relating to multiple expansion programs and record number of new product launches. The company is confident that its programme of capacity expansion, modernisation and cost reductions will bear fruit, but short term expenses are higher than anticipated. Wheel shipments will be around 3 per cent down on 3Q last year, said President and COO Steve Borick.

Proposed agreement between Goodyear and USWA

After months of protracted negotiations, the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and the United Steel Workers of America (USWA) arrived at a draft agreement for a new labour contract, designed to last three years and covering 16,000 Goodyear associates in the USA.

USWA to get seat on Goodyear board

In a groundbreaking move at Goodyear the company has agreed to giving the United Steelworkers of America a seat on the board of directors. In return, the union members will give up raises for three years, pay more for health care and accept smaller pensions. Those are key points in a contract agreement reached last week by the company and the United Steelworkers of America. Union members will vote on the contract by mid-September.

New Production Process From Kumho

Kumho is the latest tyre manufacturer to introduce a new method of tyre manufacture. Known as APU (Advanced Processing Units), the modular system is being incorporated in the new Kumho factory that is being built at Pyongtaek, Korea, close to some major car assembly plants. The new factory will be dedicated to tyre production for the OE market and the first module will start production in November this year. Further modules will come on stream at the rate of one per month until full capacity is reached in February 2004. This full capacity will be in excess of two million tyres a year.
