Continental Pleased with Situation in Czech Republic

Looking back at its decision to operate a plant in the Czech Republic, Continental AG says it is pleased with the situation in the country. The company reports that is plans are on track and it has noticed some real benefits of operating in this area. For example, the elimination of border controls on what used to be the EU frontier has noticeably reduced transport times. What’s more, the paperwork involved and the costs entailed are also said to have been cut. Purchasing is also benefiting from improved material procurement from all of Eastern Europe, the company says. “Continental AG decided in favour of an engagement in the Czech Republic 12 years ago, and thus very early on. This has long since proved to have been a smart move. The EU’s eastward expansion makes the location even more attractive,” said Manfred Wennemer, chairman of Continental’s executive board, on the occasion of Czech president Vaclav Klaus’ visit to the company’s Otrokovice factory.

Federal Announces Record Shipments in March

(Akron/Tire Review) Federal reported that it has achieved a new record for shipments in March. Total shipment value from the company’s Taiwan factory reached $11million, according to Federal.

‘The Best News is the Worst News’

“Unfortunately, the best news is the worst news for many Russian news agencies,” according to Sibur press attaché, Anna Stepanova. The Russian tyre manufacturer’s spokesperson made these comments in response to reports stating that the company had reduced first quarter tyre production by 25.5 per cent. While the reports were not inaccurate, Sibur’s management does not agree with the conclusions drawn by Russia’s Analytical News Agency (ANA) and says that numbers went down due to production improvements and capacity transfers.

Bridgestone Breaks Ground on Mexican BIRD Plant

(Akron/Tire Review) Bridgestone executives along with members of the Mexican government gathered in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, to celebrate breaking ground for the company’s new BIRD based tyre plant. Representatives from Bridgestone Americas Holding Inc. (BAH), Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire (BFNAT) and Bridgestone/Firestone Mexico, SA. de CV (BFMX) were all present.

Kumho Expands Presence in Chinese Market

(Akron/Tire Review) Kumho Tire Co has completed the expansion of its Nanjing, China tyre plant, more than doubling its annual production in China. The Nanjing plant, along with a new Kumho tyre factory in Tianjin, will result in an expected annual production capacity of 18 million tyres a year by 2007, according to Kumho. The Nanjing plant currently produces 5 million tyres a year, and the expansion will boost annual capacity to 12 million tires. Kumho also said it was considering building a third plant in China.

GE Expands to Meet Demand for Silica Tyres

GE has expanded its capacity for high technology silanes used in the production of silica tyres. Additional capacity was brought on line last week to meet the high demand for GE’s new proprietary process.

“Demand has been very strong for our new NXT silane that helps enable fast and easy dispersion of silica during rubber compounding for silica tyres,” said Dr. Ian Moore, general manager for GE’s global silanes business. “We are focusing resources on new products and processes, and this is another move in our long-term strategy for growth in the silica tyre segment. In fewer than 24 months of design and construction, we developed and deployed an innovative process that delivers vastly increased capacity for silanes.”

Yokohama Tire Philippines Starts Expansion Project

Yokohama Tire Philippines has started its P5.8-billion (£56.6 million) expansion project in the Clark economic zone.

This, the third expansion project of the plant is designed to boost production to 20,000 tyres a day by September 2006 from its present 9,000 tyres a day capacity.

Michelin to Construct New OTR Plant in Brazil

(Akron/Tire Review) Groupe Michelin has announced plans to build a new OTR tyre plant in Brazil near its existing tyre plant in Campo Grande.

The new plant, scheduled to begin producing tyres in the second half of 2007, will produce 25- to 49-inch tyres. Initial capacity will be 40,000 tons, according to Michelin, while long-range capacity could reach 55,000 tons.

Michelin said in a statement that the new plant will help it better serve its North and South American OTR customers.

EIB Lend a Hand to Conti Brazil

The European Investment Bank is providing a loan of 40 million euros to Brazil so that the development of a new Continental production facility can be put into operation.

Brasil Produtos Automotivos Ltda will manufacture passenger car tyres of which the majority will be exported to the NAFTA market to satisfy the growing domestic demand.

The site’s annual capacity will be more than 4 million tyres. The project will create some 600 jobs and is to be completed by the end of 2007.

Yokohama Rubber to Participate in Aircraft Interiors Expo 2005

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., will participate in the three-day Aircraft Interiors Expo 2005, which starts today at the Hamburg International Exhibition and Conference centre. The annual event is the world’s largest for aircraft interiors. The company will exhibit its lavatory modules and water tanks in its first appearance at the exposition.

Goodyear Increases Chinese Sourcing to $800 million

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co, will increase buying in China to a tenth of its global sourcing by 2010 from just 1 per cent now. That could boost sourcing in China to about $800 million within the next five years, chief executive Robert Keegan told Reuters, as the firm, which carries a heavy debt load, strives to lower costs.

“We purchase about $8 billion of both raw materials and other products and services…10 per cent would be $800 million, so it’s a considerable increase for us,” Mr Keegan said. The American firm is racing against rivals Michelin and Bridgestone Corp to supply China’s $6 billion tyre market, which state media has said is half controlled by foreign companies and grew about 30 per cent to some 239 million units in 2004.

Keegan said the firm would invest $120 million to double the capacity of its factory in the northern port city of Dalian to 5.3 million tyres annually. The expansion is expected to be completed by early 2007, he said.

Bridgestone Officially Opens Chinese Plant

Bridgestone has officially opened its Chinese Jiangsu Province facility that produces rubber anti-vibration components for automobiles in China. The plant is in the city of Changzhou, about 160 kilometres west of Shanghai.

Present at the ceremony were representatives from the Chinese government and municipal officials, as well as from Bridgestone. Tatsuya Okajima, a Bridgestone board member responsible for original equipment, and Hiromichi Odagiri a vice president and senior officer who serves as chief representative of Bridgestone tyre operations in China attended the event.

Michelin’s Commercial JV in India

Michelin-Apollo Tyres (MATL) has entered a joint venture with Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland, India’s two biggest commercial vehicle makers, in a bid to sell radial tyres.

The $85 million venture, to manufacture truck and bus radial tyres will commence by June 2006, reports BS Online, adding that the Pune plant will reach a capacity of 350,000 units by 2009-10.

Sumitomo Establish New Company

(Akron/Tire Review) Sumitomo Chemical has announced plans to establish a new company in southern China to manufacture and sell polypropylene compounds for automotive applications.

The new subsidiary, Sumika Polymer Compounds (Zhuhai) Co, will be 55 per cent owned by Sumitomo Chemical and 45 per cent owned by Toyo Ink Manufacturing (not related to Toyo Tire & Rubber Co.). The planned facility, which should open in mid-2006, will have an initial capacity of 10,000 tons/year, with a target of 20,000 tons/year at full capacity.
