Delphi Commits to Indian Production Joint-Venture

Delphi Product & Service Solutions has established a joint venture with Roulunds Braking Systems SAS, a leading European supplier of OE and aftermarket automotive friction components. The new company, called Alliance Friction Technologies, has already developed a purpose-built manufacturing facility near New Delhi (India), dedicated to supplying Delphi with OE equivalent quality brake pads for sale throughout Europe and to other countries supplied by Delphi’s European operations.

Greenville Michelin Plant Gets $26 Million Investment

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North America (MNA) plans to spend some $26 million on improvements to its Greenville, South Carolina, passenger and light truck/SUV tyre plant. The capital program will boost capacity there by 20 per cent, said MNA.

Marangoni Completes Tennessee Plant Expansion

(Akron/Tire Review) Marangoni Tread North America said it has completed expansion at its Nashville, Tennessee, tread rubber plant, effectively doubling capacity at the facility.

Indonesian Tyre Production – 9.3 per cent Increase Predicted

Indonesia’s tyre production capacity is forecast to rise 9.3 per cent year-on-year to 69.6 million units in 2006. The association of tyre producers (APBI) said fears of slump in the country’s auto market this year will not significantly impact on the tyre industry. Last year two and four wheel production totalled 63.67 million units, with car tyres accounting for 41.7 million units, APBI chairman Aziz Pane said told Asian news sources. In 2006 exports are predicted to reach 31 million units, valued at US$600 million, up 10.6 per cent from last year.

Yokohama Rubber to Expand OTR/EM Tyre Production

Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., has announced that it will expand its off-the-road production capacity by about 50 per cent by building a new facility at its Onomichi Plant to provide the additional capacity. Work will begin on the new facility this month, and Yokohama’s plans call for production to get under way there in November. The project will increase Yokohama’s monthly production capacity for off-the-road tyres incrementally to 1,620 tons – as measured in rubber consumption – by 2009, from 1,100 tons today. Yokohama has earmarked 5 billion yen (almost £25 million) for the investment project.

TVS Tyres’ £7.7 million Expansion Plans

TVS Tyres is to invest 600 million rupees (£7.7 million) in expanding its domestic and export capacity. “Our new capacities will be ready by 31 March. We currently manufacture 7 lakh tyres a month; after the expansion, we will have capacities to manufacture 900,000 tyres per month,” S Balasubramanian, vice president, marketing, TVS Srichakra Ltd told India’s Economic Times.

Bekaert Acquires Delta Wire

Bekaert has acquired Delta Wire Corporation for an enterprise value of US$10 million. With almost 100 employees, Delta Wire Corporation, located in Clarksdale (Mississippi), is a major supplier of bead wire for tyre reinforcement, as well as of a wide range of specialized wire products for the North American market.

Bridgestone and Scottish Coal – Tyre Management is the Key

The seemingly ever-increasing demand for plant and equipment from China in particular has had dramatic effects on the earthmover tyre market. In an attempt to meet demand, Bridgestone’s factories are operating at maximum capacity and the company has revised its production capacity forecasts. It had planned to increase earthmover tyre production by 80 per cent between 2004 and 2008, but this schedule is being accelerated.

The effects of the tyre shortage are neatly encapsulated in what is happening to the UK coal mining industry. The opencast mining industry in the UK is Western Europe’s largest and accounts for around 18,500 tyres a year. Bridgestone has been the market leader in this sector for over 10 years.

Conti Dedicates Zvolen Brake Plant

Only 10 months after breaking ground in April 2005, the Automotive Systems Division of Continental AG has dedicated a new production plant for brake callipers in Zvolen, Slovak Republic. In the future, the plant will produce high-performance brake callipers, some of which will be supplied to automotive plants in the fast growing Automotive Region Eastern Europe (AREE). Continental Automotive Systems plans to invest more than 60 million euros in the Hydraulic Brake Systems Business Unit, which plays a significant role in securing its international competitiveness.

Some Freedom for Shredded Tyres in Landfill Engineering

Defra has allowed some shredded tyres to be used for “certain landfill engineering purposes” after the landfilling of tyres is officially banned in July. The news follows research conducted by the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP).

Initial interpretation of the Landfill Directive declared that from July this year only whole tyres would be permitted for this purpose and the use of shredded tyres was therefore precluded. However, according to the NISP this move would have had serious environmental consequences; because NISP had already identified replacement aggregate as a re-use option for up to a quarter of this year’s UK tyre waste.

Superior Industries Restructures Van Nuys Facility

Superior Industries International, Inc is restructuring its manufacturing facility in Van Nuys, California, laying off approximately 375 employees, out of 635 manufacturing employees. Superior’s corporate offices and 125 corporate staff, which also are located at this facility, will not be affected by the downsizing. The company reports that manufacturing will continue despite the job cuts.

Goodyear to Announce Record Sales, Analysts Say Sell

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company says it anticipates record sales of almost $20 billion (£11.27 billion) for 2005, with more than $4.9 billion for the fourth quarter. Despite this market analysts, Deutsche Bank, have downgraded their stock rating for the company to “sell.” In addition to record sales, segment operating income is expected to be up between 20 and 25 per cent from 2004.

The manufacturer says it expects fourth quarter segment operating income “to approximate the $238 million achieved in the prior year period.” After deducting $20 million in corporate and general expenses Deutsche Bank estimates consolidated EBIT will come in at “roughly $218 million, well below their $283 million estimate.”

The Widest Possible Niche

The history of Balkrishna Tyres, a company that is probably better known by its initials – BKT, began with its incorporation in 1988. The production of off-highway tyres followed in 1995. Since its foundation BKT has made its mark in the niche segments and offers tyres for agricultural, construction, industrial and earthmover applications. Now, with £39 million (Euro 56 million) being invested, the cumulative production capacity at all three of BKT’s plants is set to almost double, from 60,000 to 100,000 tons per annum. Part of this investment will go towards the introduction of a radial earthmover tyre range later this year.

Denman Moves in On CTNA’s Bryan OTR Plant

Pensler Capital Corp, owner of Denman Tire Corp, has signed a letter of intent to purchase Continental Tire North America’s (CTNA) OTR tyre plant in Bryan, Ohio for an estimated $75 – $80 million. The Dortmund-based Roesler Group has now backed away from the deal, despite initial interest and negotiations with CTNA and the local trade union, after being outbid by Pensler Capital. The letter of intent was reportedly signed on 16 January.

“I am a little bit amused,” Roesler Group managing director, Paul Roesler Jr told Tyres & Accessories adding: “We are pleased we are no longer first in line.” In spite of his upbeat interpretation of the situation, Roesler had to concede that the other suitor simply outbid Roesler in the race to buy Continental’s Bryan facility.

Apollo Tyres Invests In Truck and Bus Radial Manufacture

Apollo Tyres is to invest 400 million rupees in truck and bus radial production at the company’s Limba plant. Apollo’s announcement follows the news in October 2005 that Michelin had bought Apollo Tyres’ stake in the two companies’ joint venture. At the time Michelin cited the “slower than projected pace” of radialisation as its reason for the move.
