Rösler Introduces Brand New OTR Tyre

Hearing that the Rösler group has grown strongly in recent years is nothing new. In Essen two much more groundbreaking announcements were made, which show the determination with which the company is chasing its goals. The Rodos business unit for example now not only offers a wide assortment of retreaded OTR tyres, but also new OTR tyres under a new brand. The product is called WinStone and will be offered in the follow radial tyre sizes: 17.5 R25, 20.5 R25, 23.5 R25 and 26.5 R25. Tyres up to 49 inches could also be added soon, managing director Paul Rösler junior explains. The same sizes will be available as cross-ply tyres.

Elgitread Puts Europe on the Agenda

Since Elgitread (India) Ltd., the Indian supplier of retreading material, machinery, accessories and services, gained a new exclusive importer for the important German market (Hämmerling group), business in Europe is said to be getting better and better. Until four or five years ago Elgitread focussed most of its capacity on the development of the North and South American markets, explains K. Gopinath in an interview with Tyres & Accessories. Since then, Europe has reached a new position on top of the Elgitread agenda, the general manager responsible for international marketing continues.

Goodyear Shows New Products in Essen

At this year’s Reifen exhibition in Essen Goodyear showed all its new products and most of the highlights from the current product portfolio. The focal point of the presentations on the Goodyear stand were product novelties for the SUV segment but also tyres for the PC segment. However farm and OTR tyres were also shown as were forward-looking developments. In the truck tyre segment Goodyear presented its new RHS 2, which is a new specialist tyre for the steering axle.

Apollo Tyres “Disappointed at Misleading Story”

A story in the Business Standard in India, and mentioned on this website yesterday, has provoked a reply from Mr. Sunam Sarkar Chief, Corporate Strategy & Marketing for Apollo Tyres. The headline was “Apollo Tyres to Stop Making Radials in India” and Mr. Sarkar has written to the publication, saying he was “quite disappointed” in the story, which he describes as “misleading in the way it represents the facts” and with a headline that is “completely erroneous.” Mr Sarkar goes on: “There is no plan to stop making radials in India, rather we are increasing capacity. The specific fact that we discussed was the possible sourcing of low volume products from our South African facilities, so that our plant in Baroda can produce more of the high volume sizes. “The quote that ‘Apollo currently manufactures 200 radial tyres a month’ is completely untrue. We are currently manufacturing more than 7,000 radials per day, with plans to increase to 10,000 radials per day very shortly. While it is correct that we are exploring the replacement of South African manufactured cross-ply tyres with Indian ones, the important aspect of that strategy that does not come through in the story is that this production in South Africa will be replaced with increased production of truck radial tyres.”

Goodyear Exiting ‘Certain Segments’ of Private Label Business

(Akron/Tire Review) Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. announced that it is withdrawing from certain segments of the private label tyre business in North America. Approximately 10 private label brands currently manufactured by Goodyear and sold by wholesale customers to tyre retailers will be affected by the decision. In 2005, this segment represented approximately $300 million in sales and about 8 million units manufactured in five North American plants, or approximately one-third of the company’s overall private label business.

Bridgestone Voted ‘Best Investor’ in Poland

For the second year running, Bridgestone Poland has won the ‘Best investor in Poland’ award from Poland’s Rzeczpospolita newspaper, the country’s respected business and political daily. The award was received by Mr Hiroyoshi Takigawa, President of Bridgestone Poland Sp z o.o., from the Polish ministers of Finance and State Treasury at a ceremony on 25 April 2006.

Rzeczpospolita is renowned in Poland for its annual ranking and review of the country’s top 500 companies, including both locally-owned firms and subsidiaries of foreign companies. At the same time, a jury appointed by the newspaper makes awards to outstanding companies across several categories.

Hayes Lemmerz Reports OP of $7.4 Million in 1Q 2006

Hayes Lemmerz International, Inc. has reported that sales for the fiscal first quarter ended 30 April 2006 totalled $572.8 million, down 2.8 per cent from $589.2 million a year earlier, with approximately 56 per cent of sales from international markets. Earnings from operations for the fiscal first quarter were $7.4 million, down from $13.2 million a year earlier.

Analysts Point to Boom in Brazilian Vehicle Production

Brazilian motor vehicle production is on a roll, with both output and export figures reportedly at all time highs in May 2006, according to the Brazilian Motor Vehicle Manufacturing Association, Antavea. The exact figures have not yet been published but they must be higher than April’s 182,481 passenger car registrations to break the record production figures. In 2005 the Brazilian vehicle manufacturing industry produced 2,009,494 cars, 365,648 light commercial vehicles 153,158 commercial trucks and buses.

History Made on Dunlop Bike Tyres

The reputation of Dunlop as a full road race tyre received a huge endorsement recently as Morecambe based John McGuinness, riding factory prepared HM Plant Honda machinery, moved into the list of TT Hall of Fame with eleven Isle of Man TT victories. First to congratulate McGuinness as he crossed the line was 10 times winner Giacomo Agostini.

Sapphire Gains Contract With ATS Euromaster

The first load of end of life tyres processed at Sapphire Energy Recovery’s new Manchester facility coincided with the signing of a major contract with ATS Euromaster. Now that the site is practically up and running the company has invited a number of tyre retailers and distributors to a special open day on 29 June, followed by the official press and VIP opening on 30 June.

Construction Underway at Bridgestone’s Hungarian BIRD Plant

Bridgestone Europe has announced that work has started on in its Tatabanya, Hungary high-performance passenger and light truck tyre plant. Construction of the about 190 million euro complex is being financed and managed by Bridgestone Hungary Manufacturing Ltd – a newly-formed subsidiary of Bridgestone Europe NV/SA – with completion due at the end of 2007. Production is scheduled to reach more than 8,000 tyres a day by 2009. The company expects to employ more than 200 people by 2009.

Hankook Tire Launches New Chinese R&D Centre

Hankook Tire is stepping up efforts to defend its position in the Chinese tyre market by investing in a new local R&D centre, extending production facilities and expanding its sales network. The company announced detailed plans for China its Jiaxing plant on 29 May.

Hankook Tire recently completed the expansion of its production facilities in Jiaxing, enhancing annual capacity to 2.5 million units. As the main production base for the company in China, the Jiaxing plant will undergo further expansion work in the latter half of this year. Once completed by the end of 2006, Hankook Tire will secure total production capacity of 28 million units per year from its Jiaxing and Jiangsu plants in China.

Yokohama to Construct Vietnam Plant

Yokohoma has announced plans to build a light truck and motorcycle tyre plant in Vietnam over the coming 13 months. According to analysts reports, the plant is expected to come on-line by June 2007, with annual capacity of 3,100 metric tonnes of mixed rubber.

Bridgestone Europe Confirms Polish Plant Plans

Bridgestone Corporation has confirmed that its European subsidiary, Bridgestone Europe NV/SA (BSEU), is to build a radial truck and bus tyre production plant in Poland. Approximately 200 million euros (¥28 billion) has been earmarked for the project. The new plant will be operated by a wholly-owned subsidiary of BSEU that is to be established. Construction will begin in the first half of 2007, with production expected to get underway in the first half of 2009. Production capacity is projected to be around 5,000 tyres a day.

Lose Weight With BBS

The engineers at wheel manufacturer BBS are constantly striving to reduce the weight of the company’s alloy wheels. Of course, when making any improvements, safety is of paramount importance. So how to achieve these potentially conflicting targets? The answer, says BBS is the patented “BBS Air Inside Technology”, which can be described as “more air, less weight.”

The secret is to incorporate circumferential hollow chambers and hollow spokes into the wheel, which not only reduces weight, but provides considerably better stability, claims BBS, thus improving safety and driving comfort.
