New Michelin XMCL For Small EMs and Telescopic Handlers

Michelin recently launched the XMCL, a tyre designed for compact construction machinery such as backhoes, compact loaders, and telescopic handlers used in farming applications. According to the manufacturer, the XMCL offers two fundamental advantages over its predecessor (the XM27) it lasts up to 46 per cent longer, and its crown and sidewalls are up to 10 per cent more resistant to punctures. Among the features that make the new tyre tougher are deeper lugs, steel casing belts and protective sidewall ribs.

Dunlop India Ambattur Plant Starts Production

The Ambattur unit of Dunlop India Ltd (DIL) is set to start production this week, a month ahead of the schedule, according to company chairman, Pawan Kumar Ruia. Ruia said initial start-up capacity of 40 tonnes daily would be ramped up to 130 tonnes a day by December. The first tyres to roll out would be for light commercial vehicles and truck tyres, while tractor tyres would be produced later.

Deldo Already Sold Over 1 Million Winter Tyres

Deldo Autobanden (Belgium) has already pre-sold over 1 million winter tyres. The vast majority of these are made up of sales of the company’s Eurowin, Sunny and Wanli products, but between 60,000 and 70,000 premium winter tyres have also been pre-ordered. Deldo made the announcement alongside the news that it is publishing a new winter catalogue for the 2006/2007 season.

GPX Buys Starbright Factory: Update

Following GPX International’s recent acquisition of the Hebei Starbright tyre factory in China, Tyres & Accessories has learnt that GPX plans to refurbish and modernize the site and expand the range of products produced in the factory. The company is to introduce a full range of bias and radial agricultural tyres, including both 85 series and 70 series radial rear tractor fitments. In addition GPX representatives say the company will install a solid tyre workshop using the technology obtained in its acquisition of US-company, Maine Industrial Tire Limited (MITL).

Titan Realigns Plans as Bryan Deal Details Emerge

(Akron/Tire Review) Even as Titan International adjusted its sales and earnings targets, more details emerged from its purchase of Continental Tire North America’s OTR tyre plant in Bryan, Ohio. Titan bought the Bryan tyre plant for $41.4 million in property, plant and equipment, and paid another $11.5 million for existing inventory. In additional, the deal gives Titan a license to sell OTR tyres under the General brand.

Nokian Sales Grow 18.3 per cent, pre-tax profits down 10.8 per cent

Nokian’s net sales grew to 349.4 million euros (18.3 per cent) in the first half of 2006. During the same period operating profit amounted to 48.6 million euros (2005: 46.1 million), up 5.4 per cent. However profits before tax fell 10.8 per cent to 42 million euros in the period. Nokian Renkaat shares soared 18 per cent higher in response to the news.

SRI Breaks Ground of Thailand Factory

Construction work for Sumitomo Rubber (Thailand) Co., Ltd.’s Thailand factory officially got underway following a groundbreaking ceremony on 1 August. Approximately fifty people including government officials, police representatives and other guests as well as Thai president Tetsuharu Mino attended the ceremony. The factory is due to start production early in 2007. It will produce high quality tyres under a new efficient production system named Taiyo. Capacity is expected to reach 8,000 units per day by the end of 2007. SRI told local news sources that it is aiming for a 10 per cent market share in the ASEAN nations in the coming years.

Hoyer Group Sign European Tyre Contract with Michelin

Bulk transport logistics specialist Hoyer is in the process of switching its tyre procurement to Michelin contracts in a number of major European countries, following the success of its Michelin-fitment policy in the UK. Hoyer UK Ltd has been fitting Michelin tyres across its 1,200-strong tanker fleet since 1997, managed through ATS Euromaster. The success of this arrangement has seen the adoption of a ‘pence per kilometre’ (PPK) contract in the Republic of Ireland, supported by Haughton & Son Tyres Ltd. It has also seen similar contracts set-up for Hoyer Group fleets in Belgium, Finland, Germany, Holland and Luxembourg.

Apollo Tyres Ltd signs MoU with Tamil Nadu Government

Onkar S Kanwar, chairman and managing director of Apollo Tyres Ltd, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu government to acquire 135 acres of land, in the Oragadam Industrial Park, 11 kilometres from Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The company says that it plans to build a radial tyre production facility. The factory will initially produce 75 tonnes of tyres per day, rising to 250 tonnes or more over time, according to the company.

Hargreaves Buys Sheffield Tyre Recycling Plant

A UK tyre crumbing plant that went into administration recently has been purchased for £1 million, by Hargreaves Services plc, a leading energy and waste services provider. Hargreaves Services says the plant, located in Sheffield, has an annual capacity in excess of 50,000 tonnes.

Tom Dattilo Leaves Cooper

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company chairman, president and CEO, Tom Dattilo has resigned to pursue another position elsewhere. The board of directors has announced that Byron O. Pond is to serve as interim CEO while the company searches for a replacement. In the last year Cooper’s share price has fallen around $11 and the company has reported a string of unimpressive quarterly reports. First half 2006 results showing a 19 per cent sales increase and $26 million of losses were published in parallel with the news of Dattilo’s resignation.

Continental Makes 38 million euros Profit in Timisoara

Continental’s Timisoara, Romania subsidiary posted gross profit of 38 million euros (137.8 million Romanian new lei), an increase of approximately per cent in euros from the previous year. At the same time, the turnover of Continental Automotive Products went up by over 33 per cent in euros last year, to approximately 217 million euros (786.6 million lei).

According to local newspapers this makes the German company the biggest player in Romania. Michelin Romania posted about 200 million euro (727. 3 million RON) turnover last year. The increase in Michelin’s business, some 40 per cent exceeded that of Continental in terms of growth rate, but the French have been operating at a loss for a number of years. However Michelin Romania says it expects to get back into the black this year, the news reports added.

Amtel-Vredestein to acquire Moscow tyre plant

Tyre maker Amtel-Vredestein N.V. said it is acquiring the Moscow Tyre Plant (MTP) in a deal that will provide it with production capacity to meet growing demand in Russia. The company said it plans to use the facility to manufacture its Amtel and Vredestein brands, which are in short supply due to capacity constraints. Working at full capacity, the Moscow Tire Plant could bring Amtel $66 million to $82 million a year in added sales, the company said in a statement.

Diesel Demand Leads to Glow Plug Factory

The rapidly-increasing demand for diesel cars in Europe, and with it the increased demand for glow plugs, has led NGK Spark Plugs to open a new factory on its Komaki site in Japan, dedicated to the production of ceramic and metal glow plugs. The rise in demand has seen a dramatic growth in NGK’s market share – four years ago the company claimed 10 per cent of the UK glow plug market and today the figure is 50 per cent and rising. NGK’s Komaki factory was originally opened in 1962 and the new four-storey building covers some 30,000 square metres. It will manufacture several hundred different types of glow plugs and the annual production capacity is 20 million pieces.
