Groundbreaking held for Bridgestone’s Joliette plant expansion

In addition to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the opening of its car and light truck tyre factory in Joliette, Canada, last Thursday Bridgestone Americas officially broke ground on expansion work at the plant. Upwards of CAD$300 million (£178.1 million) will be invested over a period of five years and will see the installation of new equipment installed at the Joliette site that will lift production capacity by 3,000 tyres per day to a total of 20,000 tyres a day by 2023.

Point S to have 350 North American outlets by year’s end

It’s been a year since Point S extended its North American network, and at Point S Canada’s first annual congress, which took place in Quebec at the start of this month, the company reported on its progress towards the goal of becoming the third-largest independent tyre dealer network in America by 2020.

Pirelli travels to Canadian grand prix with P Zero Purple ultrasoft

For the seventh round of the 2016 Formula One World Championship, Pirelli will supply its new P Zero Purple ultrasoft for the second time, following its debut in Monaco. As a low-grip circuit with high track evolution, Canada’s semi-permanent Circuit Gilles Villeneuve provides a good opportunity to test out the Monaco tyre allocation (the three softest Pirelli P Zero F1 tyres) in a different context; the tyres will be used at higher speeds and with higher loads, generating higher temperatures and putting increased energy through the tyres. The circuit is also known for its high kerbs, making it a test of the tyres’ construction as well is their tread compounds.

Titan’s opens oil sands tyre reclamation facility – plans similar setups in Australia, Chile

On 29 March, Titan International subsidiary Titan Tire Reclamation Corp. officially opened its oil sands facility in Fort McMurray, Canada. Titan International estimates that the operation, when fully operational, will be able to convert 240,000 pounds (108.9 tonnes) of scrap tyres to approximately 13,600 gallons (61,800 litres) of oil 52,800 pounds (23.9 tonnes) of steel and 76,800 pounds (34.8 tonnes) of carbon black each day.

Pirelli to sell truck tyres in the North America

Pirelli has begun plans to sell truck and bus tyres in the United States and Canada through a new entity, TP Commercial Solutions LLC. The move represents an expansion into North America of Pirelli’s industrial business unit, currently headed at the group level by Pirelli CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera.It also follows plans to separate Pirelli’s car and truck tyre businesses, which was initiated in practice by a stock market filing published on 21 March in China. This filing saw China National Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. (ChemChina’s tyre division known as CNRC) announce it had signed a “material asset reorganisation framework agreement” with Aeolus Tyre Co., Ltd including the creation of a China-based Pirelli TBR company.

Michelin boosting winter tyre production in Canada

A temporary production increase will soon be implemented at a Michelin plant in Canada in order to meet high North American market demand for winter tyres. According to Jeff MacLean, president of Michelin North America (Canada), the tyre maker will boost production of the Michelin X-ICE Xi2 at its Pictou County facility; the additional output will be sold both in Canada and in export markets.

Bridgestone expanding capacity at Joliette, Canada tyre plant

Bridgestone Canada Inc. (Bridgestone) is expanding its Canadian passenger and light truck tyre manufacturing facility in Joliette, Quebec, as part of a five-year investment that could total upwards of CA$300 million (£160 million). Groundbreaking for this multi-phase expansion of the facility is expected to occur this year; new plant equipment will be phased in over a five-year period in an effort to help the plant support the North American market and meet demand for larger diameter tyres, such as those fitted to modern pickup trucks and SUVs. The project will lift plant capacity by 3,000 tyres per day to bring daily production to 20,000 tyres by 2023.

Canadian agency fines Toyo Tire for bid-rigging conspiracy

Tyre and rubber component manufacturer Toyo Tire & Rubber has been fined CA$1.7 million by Canada’s Competition Bureau for its participation in an international bid‑rigging conspiracy related to the supply of anti‑vibration components to Toyota Motor Corp, and on 9 December pleaded guilty to three counts of bid rigging under the country’s Competition Act.
