A new tyre line has joined the Hankook range of bus tyres. The SmartCity AU04+ is designed for year-round urban use – it is 3PMSF and M+S marked – and is available in size 275/70R22.5.
Falken Tyre Europe is expanding its portfolio of truck tyres, adding new sizes to its already proven GI388 for regional transport and construction-site use, introducing new high-load versions for the RI151 bus tyre and the SI011 winter truck tyre. The brand is boosting the load index of its steer axle tyres for regional use, as well as introducing high-load and XL width versions in response to market demand. These high-load tyre models have replaced their normal load index predecessors to minimise confusion and the need for duplicate stocking.

Chinese bus fleet operator Guangzhou Jumbo Bus Co Ltd. intends to convert its entire fleet of LNG-powered buses to electric propulsion over the coming three years, and as it does so will exclusively shod its fleet with Hankook tyres. Jumbo Bus, which operates six city bus companies and a total of 4,500 buses, signed a memorandum of understanding with Hankook Tire this month covering the supply of tyres specifically developed for electric buses.
Volvo Buses and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore have signed a cooperation agreement on a research and development programme for autonomous electric 12-metre buses. For Volvo Group this will be the first autonomous application in public transportation. Volvo Group has also presented an autonomous, battery-electric, load carrier.
Two new additions will soon join the Kumho commercial vehicle tyre portfolio, the KCA03 for urban bus applications and the KXT10 trailer tyre.
At present, BFGoodrich commercial vehicle tyres are available in all markets around the world except for Europe, and sales of these tyres exceeds 1.6 million units per year. The brand is set to go global at the start of next year with the introduction of a BFGoodrich range of tuck and bus tyres in the UK and Ireland, as well as in the wider European market.
The European Commission has issued notice that it will initiate an anti-dumping proceeding focusing on imports of truck and bus tyres originating in the People’s Republic of China. The Commission is taking this course of action as a result of a complaint received on 30 June by the “coalition against unfair tyres imports,” a group representing the interests of manufacturers who account for more than 45 per cent of all new and retreaded truck and bus tyre production in the European Union.

The body within India’s Department of Commerce established to investigate unfair trade practices has recommended the introduction of anti-dumping duties on certain tyres imported from China. In the recently published findings of its report into truck and bus tyres with rim diameters above 16-inches that originate in or are exported from the People’s Republic, the Directorate General of Anti-Dumping (DGAD) states it is “of the view that imposition of definitive anti-dumping duty is necessary to offset dumping and injury.”
Bridgestone has secured the largest commercial fleet contract in its history, a $110m, five-year deal with transport operator FirstGroup. Bridgestone will supply tyres to more than 60,000 of FirstGroup’s buses and coaches in the USA, Canada and the UK.

Giti Tire has introduced its leading urban bus tyre, the Giti GT867, into the European market. The tyre, also suitable for refuse collection fleets, has reinforced sidewalls to prevent kerb damage, and is designed for constant stop and go operating conditions with frequent changes in speed and direction. The GT867 is available in 11R22.5, 295/80R22.5, 305/70R22.5 and 315/80R22.5 sizes. Load capacity ranges from 148/145 to 158/150.
Giti Tire’s GSW226, the brand’s first specific winter marked tyre, has won plaudits following a nine-day trip to Switzerland and Austria, fitted by one of the North East’s leading coach hire companies. Stockton-on-Tees-based Compass Royston, which undertakes transport for schools and travel operators, and counts Middlesbrough and Hartlepool United Football Clubs among its many sport clients, decided to trial the tyre based on brand feedback from its sister companies, Esk Valley Coaches and Proctors Coaches.
Apollo Tyres has thrown its hat into the European truck and bus radial ring and introduced a complete range for our regions. Furthermore, the company is only distributing these products online, through its own ApolloTyresDirect.com portal. The company is the first, and so far, only tyre manufacturer to use the direct online approach to market here, and it says pricing on the site is completely transparent and free from hidden costs or complicated deals.

Daimler’s homologation of Pirelli’s extra-load :01 Series commercial tyre products for city, highway and regional applications has continued, adding the latest Pirelli MC:01 (275/70R22.5). The tyre has been designed with an increased load index, suitable for new-generation transportation such as hybrid and electric vehicles, which require a greater axle load.
UK wholesaler and specialist in commercial vehicle products Kirkby Tyres continues to leverage its exclusive distribution deals in order to deliver the right tyres to the UK’s evolving commercial vehicle segment. The Speke, Liverpool based company has exclusive distribution agreements with Double Coin, Sailun and Longmarch, and these relationships are allowing it to fulfil customer requirements. “We believe that long-standing business relationships are essential,” Kirkby’s spokesman told Tyres & Accessories. “It is through such relationships that we are able to offer our customers assurance of quality, continuity of supply and a full manufacturers’ warranty.”
