Apollo Tyres Cuts Prices

India’s Apollo Tyres Ltd tyres has reduced its prices by a range of 2-4.5 per cent. The announcement follows Indian finance minister, P Chidambaram’s decision to reduce excise duty on tyres from 24 to 16 per cent. After MRF and Ceat cut their prices there was speculation that other large manufacturers would also pass the savings onto consumers. “The price cut is in the range of 2-4.5 per cent across products and various categories,” a company official said, declining to go into the specifics of the price reduction.After the Budget announcements, the excise duty on truck and bus tyres for the replacement market was reduced to 16 per cent. Truck and bus tyre accounted for over 70 per cent of the turnover of the tyre industry in value terms.

More Brands than Shelf Space?

In a mature market like the UK, one thing is clear. There are a lot of different brands competing for the same customers. The so-called ‘premium’ brand manufacturers are each responsible for a handful of second line brands. While the so-called second line manufacturers are also often responsible for different names. On top of this, there seems to be an ever increasing number of budget brands, some with well known names and some still establishing themselves in the market place. The situation is confusing enough, but is the large number of brands available hindering retailers’ sales efforts? This month Tyres & Accessories would like to hear the trade’s views on this subject. Pirelli Wins 25 Million Euro Cable Contract

Pirelli energy and cable systems has announced that its Comergy subsidiary has won a 25 million euro contract to supply the SP PowerAssets, a subsidiary of Singapore Power. The contract will see the company supply and install 400kV PPL oil filled power cables, auxiliary cables and accessories in order to reinforce the county’s power transmission network within the country. Pirelli’s Eastleigh and Bishopstoke, UK plants will manufacture the 400kV power cables and accessories, whilst Pirelli plants in Turkey and Indonesia will supply the auxiliary cables.

”We are delighted to have secured a second 400kV contract with SP PowerAssets in the extremely competitive Asian marketplace for power cables,” Valerio Battista, managing director of Pirelli Energy Cables and Systems commented. “The award of this second contract is important recognition of our capability of supplying competitively priced solutions for high voltage networks. It also demonstrates the client’s trust in our ability to deliver such projects on time and within budget.”

Will F1 Lose a Tyre Supplier?

The FIA is still deliberating over whether or not to adopt just one tyre supplier for future Formula One series’ according to reports from Autosport magazine.

The association’s president, Max Mosley suggested the change in an effort to cut the F1 teams’ costs, saying that too much of the teams’ budget is spent on testing new compounds.

Goodyear Aviation Win Ryanair Contract

Goodyear Aviation is to supply tyres and tyre maintenance to Ryanair, under a new five-year contract.

The contract with the low budget airline began on 1 January and includes the delivery of new tyres and the repair and overhaul of aviation tyres that supply the current fleet of 66 Boeing 737-800s. This will extend to a further 96 aircraft, with up to 123 options to be delivered up until 2009.

Targeting the Budget Alloy Market

Sherbrook is now supplying two new designs, from DJ Wheels, in an attempt to tighten its grip on the budget alloy wheel market. The DJ358 has six thick spokes, while the similar sized DJ357 has a more slender twin spoke design.

The ‘entry-level’ products are aimed at the first time buyer of aftermarket alloys, explains the wheel manufacturer wholesaler. DJ Wheels’ products start at a price of £25 and so are targeted towards customers who can’t afford to pay the high prices of prestige brands.

ArvinMeritor to Divest Businesses Units

Arvinmeritor has announced that it will divest the company’s Light Vehicle Aftermarket (LVA) business group and take a “non-cash goodwill impairment charge” of $190 million (£103 million) in its fourth quarter budget. In addition, the company announced its plan to divest its Roll Coater coil coating business, a wholly owned subsidiary.

US Authority Proposes TPMS System

The US government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has officially proposed that all new vehicles carry a TPMS. The announcement comes after the NHTSA sent the draft rule to the Office of Management and Budget on 1 July.

NHTSA Submit New TPMS Rule

The NHTSA has sent a new Tyre Pressure Monitoring rule to the US Office of Management and Budget, 11 months after the agency’s original rule was rejected by the US Appeal Court.

VW Lupo through 20 countries… with just 100 Euro on fuel

Austrian journalist and ‘fuel economy record man’ Gerhard Plattner succeeded in crossing 20 European countries in a VW Lupo 3L TDI, with a fuel budget of less than 100 Euros. Plattner relied on Bridgestone Ecopia low-rolling-resistance tyres that are fitted as standard on the Lupo. Their fuel-saving capabilities helped him to achieve a record average consumption of a mere 2.78 litres/100 km. The attempt began on 3 November 2003 in Oslo, Norway, and ended 4,683 kilometres and four days later in The Hague, The Netherlands. Running at an average speed of 80.76 km/h, the Austrian managed to complete the trip having spent only 90.94 Euro from the budgeted 100.

The Retread Process: As Good As New?

If the guys who sell tyres on the country’s fast fits are to be believed, the retread is dead. There are regular anecdotes coming back through the grapevine from customers who have been told that: they don’t make car retreads any more; you’ll only get 3,000 miles on a retread; or even more insidiously – they are dangerous – I wouldn’t have my mother-in-law driving on them… One wholesaler who had just delivered a batch of retreads to a client overheard that same client tell a customer asking for the very product that he had just delivered that they didn’t carry them!There may be numerous reasons for this misinformation about retreads. It may be that the fitters simply don’t understand the process of either tyre manufacture or tyre retreading. It may be that there are greater margins to be made from selling budget tyre brands. It may simply be down to personal prejudice. There is an assumption made by many in the tyre business that everyone understands what a retread is. Since very few in the tyre business understand the process of tyre manufacture, then even fewer are likely to understand the process of tyre retreading – yet the two are very closely related – especially in the hot cure process.T&A took the opportunity to tour one of the UK’s leading retread operations at Vacu-Lug to view both the hot cure and the precure methods operating side by side (these are the two main methods of retreading).

Ford To Cut Supply Budget

Ford has announced that it plans to cut $2 billion from its European supply budget. Chairman of Ford of Europe, David Thursfield, said that the cost reductions would be achieved through design improvements, rather than forcing suppliers to cut prices.

White House Requests Rethink On Pressure Monitoring

The White House Office of Management and Budget has asked the NHTSA to review the requirement for new vehicles to be fitted with tyre pressure monitoring equipment fitted to the wheel and tyre assembly. The OMB states that most TPMS work on data sent by the ABS system, and that the added cost of the new system, may lead manufacturers to stop fitting ABS to vehicles on a cost based argument. The NHTSA proposes that vehicle manufacturers phase in a direct pressure monitoring system, replacing existing indirect systems, over the next four years.
