2014 F1 season too soon for Hankook

While Formula One tyre supplier Pirelli has sought an end to some of the teams’ gripes about its current P Zero tyre specifications, the question of whether it will remain in the series after the expiration of its current contract remains in doubt. A similar list of names to that previously generated in mid-2010 has been circulated, when Bridgestone announced its withdrawal from the series. However, for at least one major player it appears the lack of development time and uncertainty about rule changes in the short to medium term mean that 2014 is too soon to enter the world’s most high-profile motorsport series.

Bridgestone supports rider in 100,000 mile charity adventure

Bridgestone has agreed to supply Aberdeen’s Bruce Smart with its Battlax Sport Touring T30 tyre as he embarks on a £1 million charity adventure in memory of his mother. His 75,000 mile journey will cross 84 countries in 18 months, a challenge which will be compounded by his decision to do it all on a Suzuki GSX-R1000. Bridgestone will follow the 36 year-old’s quest to raise £1 million for four different charities, supplying him with new tyres when necessary. Smart, who is raising money for The Children’s Trust Tadworth, the Born Free Foundation, the Royal British Legion and St Christopher’s Hospice, dropped by Bridgestone’s head offices in Warwick as he begins his round-the-world mission.

Bridgestone acknowledged for carbon emission efforts

Bridgestone’s voluntary efforts to reduce carbon emissions have been praised by the Freight Transport Association. The tyre maker shares that FTA climate change policy manager Rachael Dillon has “welcomed” the work Bridgestone is carrying out, following the Department for Transport’s overall commendation of self-regulation across the sector.

CV Show 2013 exceeds expectations

April’s annual gathering of the UK logistics industry, The Commercial Vehicle Show at Birmingham’s NEC represents a fine opportunity for those in the tyre industry to connect with this side of their business. The 2013 iteration boasted the best exhibitor turnout since 2009, and the show itself seemed to have exceeded many expectations for visitor numbers, which usually number around 16,000 over its three days, the organisers say. Certainly Tyres & Accessories witnessed busy stands visiting the show on day two.

Bridgestone wins patent infringement lawsuit

Bridgestone Corporation has won a lawsuit against China’s Qingdao Genco Industrial Group Co., Ltd. The legal action against the Qingdao, Shandong Province-based firm was based upon an infringement of design patent rights, and it is by no means the first of its kind that Bridgestone has undertaken. Along with announcing its latest court victory, Bridgestone said it “will continue working to maintain and enhance the value of its brands by taking the necessary actions to protect its trade secrets and intellectual property. This includes reporting patent infringements to the appropriate authorities and seeking proper redress through the court system.”

Bridgestone UK’s app goes global

Bridgestone UK’s tyre monitoring app is now being rolled out across other European markets. According to the company, the sales force assisting ‘Challenge’ app works by calculating the true cost of tyres over time and shares the performance data with all other users, before providing performance comparisons against competitors’ tyres – all on the user’s tablet.

Deployed in 2012, the technology has revolutionised Bridgestone’s sales process and is now regarded as a strategic tool, after being created by RNF Digital. Bridgestone’s product and marketing manager Andy Mathias said: “We are proud of our innovative use of technology to help serve our customers and sales force. The application that we developed in the UK is now being used across Europe and is even being trialed in North and South America.”

Bridgestone consumer website goes multilingual

In March, Bridgestone Europe launched its new consumer segment website, auto.bridgestone.eu. The site, produced together with UK-based digital communications agency Amaze, and Belgian ICT group Cegeka, was initially only available in English. The tyre maker has announced that the website is now available in four further languages – French, German, Italian and Spanish. These lingual additions mean the auto.bridgestone.eu now caters to consumers in the five major European tyre markets. Bridgestone Europe says additional country sites will be rolled out in the coming months.

Grant, MoU to further guayule development

Ever since agricultural-based biomaterials company Yulex Corporation was established, it has been supported by the University of Arizona; indeed, Yulex’s first experimental crops were planted on campus grounds and the university substantially contributed to Yulex's agronomic development successes. Yulex Corporation has now announced it will provide the University of Arizona a US$3 million, five-year grant. This grant focuses on the breeding and agronomic development of Guayule with the aim of producing biorubber for medical, consumer, and industrial applications.

Bridgestone Biorubber Research Center project approaches groundbreaking

Bridgestone Americas is to break ground on construction of its Biorubber Process Research Center on 16 May. The research and development project in Mesa, Arizona, will investigate the use of the guayule plant as an alternative natural rubber source. Natural rubber from guayule has almost identical qualities to that harvested from the hevea tree, which currently is the primary source for the natural rubber used in tyre production.

Rebate rewards Bridgestone energy saving efforts

On 7 May, Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations presented its LaVergne tyre facility in Tennessee with a rebate totalling more than US$350,000; the plant received this rebate under the Tennessee Valley Authority and Nashville Electric Service’s ‘EnergyRight Solutions for Industry’ programme, which is aimed at helping manufacturers implement energy efficiency and demand-reduction improvements. The rebate was initially given to Bridgestone Americas in March.

Bridgestone OE run-flats now on par with conventional tyres – test

Run-flat tyres have often been blasted for the inferior comfort they deliver, however a recent European test gives hope that puncture avoidance may no longer equal a harsh ride. German motoring organisation ADAC and Austria’s ÖAMTC put four Bridgestone run-flats to the test, and found one to offer comparable ride comfort and fuel consumption to an equivalent standard tyre.

Armagh biker to meet Rossi following Bridgestone promotion

Armagh motorcyclist David Hoy will meet nine-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi after he became the winner of Bridgestone’s European ‘Mission Rossi’ competition. The 46 year-old will fly out to the Netherlands for the Assen round of the MotoGP championship, where he will receive VIP passes, accommodation, and a private meet and greet with the Italian legend.

Bridgestone sales up 9% in Q1

In a quarter punctuated by recovering domestic and US markets, a stagnant and unstable European economy, and slowing economic expansion in Asia, Bridgestone Corporation posted net sales of ¥794.5 billion (£5.2 billion) in the three months from 1 January to 31 March, a year-on-year increase of nine per cent. Operating income amounted to ¥74.4 billion (£483.6 million), 18 per cent higher than in the first quarter of 2012, while operating margin rose 0.7 per cent year-on-year to 9.4 per cent. Ordinary income was up 14 per cent to ¥70.1 billion (£455.6 million), and net income rose two per cent to ¥43.1 billion (£280.1 million).
