Grant, MoU to further guayule development

Ever since agricultural-based biomaterials company Yulex Corporation was established, it has been supported by the University of Arizona; indeed, Yulex’s first experimental crops were planted on campus grounds and the university substantially contributed to Yulex's agronomic development successes. Yulex Corporation has now announced it will provide the University of Arizona a US$3 million, five-year grant. This grant focuses on the breeding and agronomic development of Guayule with the aim of producing biorubber for medical, consumer, and industrial applications.

Bridgestone Biorubber Research Center project approaches groundbreaking

Bridgestone Americas is to break ground on construction of its Biorubber Process Research Center on 16 May. The research and development project in Mesa, Arizona, will investigate the use of the guayule plant as an alternative natural rubber source. Natural rubber from guayule has almost identical qualities to that harvested from the hevea tree, which currently is the primary source for the natural rubber used in tyre production.

Rebate rewards Bridgestone energy saving efforts

On 7 May, Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations presented its LaVergne tyre facility in Tennessee with a rebate totalling more than US$350,000; the plant received this rebate under the Tennessee Valley Authority and Nashville Electric Service’s ‘EnergyRight Solutions for Industry’ programme, which is aimed at helping manufacturers implement energy efficiency and demand-reduction improvements. The rebate was initially given to Bridgestone Americas in March.

Bridgestone OE run-flats now on par with conventional tyres – test

Run-flat tyres have often been blasted for the inferior comfort they deliver, however a recent European test gives hope that puncture avoidance may no longer equal a harsh ride. German motoring organisation ADAC and Austria’s ÖAMTC put four Bridgestone run-flats to the test, and found one to offer comparable ride comfort and fuel consumption to an equivalent standard tyre.

Armagh biker to meet Rossi following Bridgestone promotion

Armagh motorcyclist David Hoy will meet nine-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi after he became the winner of Bridgestone’s European ‘Mission Rossi’ competition. The 46 year-old will fly out to the Netherlands for the Assen round of the MotoGP championship, where he will receive VIP passes, accommodation, and a private meet and greet with the Italian legend.

Bridgestone sales up 9% in Q1

In a quarter punctuated by recovering domestic and US markets, a stagnant and unstable European economy, and slowing economic expansion in Asia, Bridgestone Corporation posted net sales of ¥794.5 billion (£5.2 billion) in the three months from 1 January to 31 March, a year-on-year increase of nine per cent. Operating income amounted to ¥74.4 billion (£483.6 million), 18 per cent higher than in the first quarter of 2012, while operating margin rose 0.7 per cent year-on-year to 9.4 per cent. Ordinary income was up 14 per cent to ¥70.1 billion (£455.6 million), and net income rose two per cent to ¥43.1 billion (£280.1 million).

Bridgestone introduces Bandag M788(E) all-season coach tread

Bridgestone Europe has released a new Bandag brand all-season coach and bus tread, a product claimed to offer “impressive mileage performance with [the] same tread depth and lighter to equal weight than its predecessor.”

Nokian share transfer increases Bridgestone Corp. ownership above 15%

Bridgestone Europe will transfer its shares in Nokian Tyres plc to Bridgestone Corporation on 7 May, the Japanese tyre maker told Nokian. This agreement decreases Bridgestone Europe’s ownership in Nokian to less than five per cent of share capital and Bridgestone Corporation’s ownership to over 15 per cent of the share capital.

Angel GT outstrips rivals’ mileage, says Pirelli

The latest sport touring tyre from Pirelli, the Angel GT, has hit the streets – and the Italian tyre maker claims it is number one for mileage within its segment. This weighty statement is based upon testing carried out by Motorrad TestCenter in Germany. Tyres & Accessories has yet to read the test report, however Pirelli indicates that the Angel GT was certified by Motorrad TestCenter as delivering better mileage than the Michelin Pilot Road 3, Dunlop Sportmax Roadsmart II, Bridgestone Battlax BT 023, Continental RoadAttack2 and Metzeler Roadtec Z8 Interact M/O.

Yokohama receives satisfaction survey award

During April’s Auto Shanghai show, Yokohama Rubber held a ceremony to mark its strong performance in the "2012 China Original Equipment Tire Satisfaction Index Study" carried out by the research firm J. D. Power Asia Pacific. The study, which was released in November 2012, placed Yokohama on top of the 19 original equipment tyre brands tested in terms of overall customer satisfaction. At the ceremony in Shanghai, Geoff Broderick, vice-president and general manager of J. D. Power and Associates Asia-Pacific, presented a plaque to Koichi Tanaka, chairman and president of Yokohama Rubber (China) Co., Ltd.

Good supplier business: Pirelli CPO talks to T&A

Following the announcement of Pirell’s 2013 Supplier Awards on 10 April, Tyres & Accessories spoke with Luigi Staccoli, Pirelli’s chief purchasing officer (CPO), to find out more what makes a good supplier.
First, Luigi Staccoli offered his appraisal of the awards event itself: “It was a very successful presentation of the awards with an event demonstrating the performance of Pirelli products running in parallel.” The parallel event is said to have offered representatives of the winning suppliers the opportunity to drive some of the most exciting vehicles available such as the Ferrari California and Lamborghini Galliardo on a test track near Milan.

Stone laying for Bridgestone’s Thai OTR plant

A stone laying ceremony marking the start of work on Bridgestone’s new OTR tyre factory in Thailand was held on 29 April. Attendees included representatives from the industrial estate where the site is located and from the company that will build the plant. Bridgestone Group management present at the ceremony included CEO Masaaki Tsuya and Shigeru Kaneko, managing director of Bridgestone Specialty Tire Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd., the company that will operate the new plant. In accord with tradition, the ceremony included prayers for the success of the plant's building, after which the attendees put the foundation stone in place, giving their blessings for the company's ongoing prosperity.

Cutting carbon, cutting costs – at LCRS conference

The 2013 Cutting Carbon, Cutting Costs Conference, an interactive event designed to provide specialised carbon reduction advice for freight operators, is scheduled to be held on Wednesday 22 May at the Heritage Motor Museum, Gaydon, Warwickshire. At the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme (LCRS) conference there will be a range of workshops to suit freight operators' own individual fleet and business.

Tyre safety check data alarming – Bridgestone

The release of 2012 statistics gathered by Bridgestone while taking out more than 28,000 free tyre safety checks in Europe provide grim reading. The world’s largest tyre manufacturer’s figures suggest that tyre care and awareness has continued to deteriorate in the region. The most alarming change from data gathered in the same way in 2011 is an increase of 25 per cent in the number of tyres either underinflated or beyond the legal limit. While the European Union has in place many strategies for making roads safer – it is a specified goal of the EU tyre label – and organisations such as TyreSafe in the UK grow both membership and influence, Bridgestone’s data suggests that the most basic tyre checks remain beyond too many of the continent’s drivers.

Bridgestone sponsors Air Ambulance summer fundraiser

Bridgestone’s motorcycle division has donated £10,000 to become the sponsors of the 18 August Rescue Ride Out, a nationwide bike convoy from all corners of the UK supporting the Air Ambulance service. The two-wheel spectacle culminates at the Brackley Festival of Motorcycling. The event has the support of British motorsport too; Steve Parrish, current BBC motorcycle commentator, is supporting the event.
