Bridgestone’s Garfield elected to natural gas company board
The Board of Directors of Piedmont Natural Gas have elected Gary Garfield, CEO and president of Bridgestone Americas, Inc., to the company’s board.
Based in Japan, Bridgestone Corporation is the world’s largest tyre and rubber company.

One of the UK’s leading transport operators has extended a fleet agreement with Bridgestone. The tyre manufacturer will supply First Bus with its range of premium products to cover different regions in the UK, predominantly Yorkshire and the south west. The deal covers around 40 per cent of the overall First Bus fleet, which represents growth for Bridgestone.
The Bandag operation in Australia reports its receipt of an Environmental Innovation award at this year’s Queensland Bus Industry Council (QBIC) annual conference. The QBIC bestowed this honour upon Bandag Manufacturing Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bridgestone Australia, in recognition of its investment in green initiatives. The company has implemented a variety of measures at its manufacturing facility in Wacol, including rainwater harvesting, a gas boiler burner upgrade and low energy LED lighting.
Earlier this year Bridgestone introduced the first product in its new Bridgestone-branded agricultural tyre range, the VT-Tractor, and the first two farmers in the UK to drive on the tyres have offered glowing product testimonials.
Last week, Bridgestone Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. officially opened its new Asia Pacific Technical Center (APTC) facility in Thailand’s Pathum Thani Province. The APTC team relocated to this new, larger facility in late March from a site north of Bangkok, where it had operated since its inauguration in 2013. Bridgestone says the new facility will help the APTC to “strengthen its functions and better develop products suited to the region’s customers’ needs and requirements.”
Firestone’s relaunch through a series of summer music festival sponsorships – the Firestone Music Tour announced at the Geneva Motor Show – will include events in Spain, Germany, France, Poland, Italy and at the Reading Festival in the UK. Firestone has committed to a high-profile presence in Reading, led by a team of Firestone roadies incorporating a large Firestone stand, signage, special attractions, parking and campsite activities. A new Firestone website will also be launched shortly, supplemented by a concerted social networking campaign on a variety of online channels.

In short, we examined the spectrum of figures offered for the size of UK demand and found that most sources settle between 31 and 38 million units a year. Interestingly, some of the latest data points to the market being at the higher end of the spectrum – something that has not been very widely or openly acknowledged in the past.

Bridgestone has signed a high profile deal to sponsor Channel Four’s (C4) weather bulletins. According to the company, Bridgestone will be communicating with around 40 million people from 24 May right up until May 2016 in an attempt to connect with a broader audience, away from more commonplace automotive sponsorships of football and motorsport.
Bridgestone has been appointed as one of the tyre suppliers for the new Ferrari California T. The new V8 turbocharged Ferrari now can leave Maranello production line with Bridgestone Potenza S007 RFT (Run-Flat Technology) sport tyres.

At motorcycle fairs during the spring, Bridgestone showed off the Battlax Sport Touring T30 Evo and Battlax Adventure A40, the new tyres it first presented at last autumn’s Intermot show. The first of these is – as the name suggests – a further evolution of the existing T30 sport touring tyre that will (for the time being) largely remain in the Bridgestone portfolio. The second of the pair succeeds the Battle Wing in the enduro segment. According to Bridgestone, both tyres display particular improvements in wet performance.
The organiser of the 2015 Commercial Vehicle Show has predicted that official, independently audited figures will prove it was “one of the busiest” editions of the annual event since the UK came out of recession. Stating that the second day in particular (15 April) saw packed halls and long registration queues, Rob Skelton, CV Show Director, said: “There was a buzz about the CV Show this year right from the very start and attendance levels were high.
The strong representation of the tyre and wheel business at April’s Commercial Vehicle Show 2015 proved that the show is considered an increasingly important platform for those within the business. Indeed, Giti Tire’s notably larger stand, effectively re-launching its corporate identity, and the presence of Pirelli after a decade of non-attendance – alongside strong commitments from all the leading UK CV brands; major CV tyre wholesalers, Kirkby Tyres, RH Claydon and Kings Road Tyres; fleet servicing companies; and garage machinery providers.
Bridgestone exhibited from a large stand at this year’s CV Show, saying that the annual event reaped “a number of quantifiable rewards with many new relationships forged”. A contract extension with Axis Fleet Management. Bridgestone also commented that visitor numbers had risen on 2014 figures, suggesting that its Bridgestone Partner network, which promises greater support to dealers and increased reductions in fleet operating costs, was an attractive proposition. The show represented the European launch of Bridgestone Partner, which will consist of over 350 truck tyre specialists across the UK and Ireland implementing Bridgestone’s ‘Total Tyre Care’ approach.
More than 10 million original equipment and replacement market Ecopia tyres have been sold in the Asia Pacific region since the brand was first launched there in 2009, reports Bridgestone Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. As of 2014, Ecopia tyres accounted for more than 20 per cent of Bridgestone’s replacement market sales in Asia Pacific.
The research Bridgestone has conducted on the use of guayule-derived natural rubber in tyre production was recognised at the 2015 Edison Award Winners event on 23 April. The tyre maker went home with a 2015 Edison Gold Award for Innovation in Automotive Solutions.
