In his position as Bridgestone’s north region managing director, as well as chair of the SMMT Aftermarket Section, Robin Shaw has expressed concern at Chancellor George Osborne’s plans in last month’s Budget to extend the deadline for new cars and motorcycles to be MOT tested after four years instead of three. Shaw believes the added 12 months will result in more cars running on tyres with tread depths below the 1.6mm legal limit.
Bridgestone New Zealand Ltd. has agreed to sponsor the ‘NZ Road Transport Hero’ award, a new honour to be given by the body representing the nation’s commercial freight industry, the Road Transport Forum. The award recognises the actions of truck drivers and other industry members who attempt to save others from harm during the course of their work, and Bridgestone will serve as sponsor for a three-year period.
Bridgestone says it sold more original equipment truck and bus radials during June than at any other time during the last seven years. The company hasn’t released specific sales volume information, however it reports that “thousands” of Bridgestone-brand original equipment tyres were sold during the month. In the absence of legislation regarding the disposal of end of life tyres, New Zealand’s tyre importers, wholesalers and retailers are free to deal – or not deal – as they please with the more than 5 million tyres demounted from vehicles every year. According to estimates published by the Tyrewise project, some 70 per cent of these tyres end up in landfill. This is why Bridgestone considers the agreement it has signed to collect and recycle waste tyres from its stores throughout the country’s North Island “breakthrough”.

Two members of the Bridgestone Corporation board are swapping positions. It’s been about a year since Bridgestone began its relaunch of the Firestone consumer tyre brand in Europe with the introduction of the Destination HP SUV, and this has now been joined in the Firestone portfolio by two new ranges, the Multiseason and the Multihawk 2. The first of this pair is particularly significant as it marks Firestone’s entry into the growing all-season tyre market.
