Based in Japan, Bridgestone Corporation is the world’s largest tyre and rubber company.
The Venezuelan subsidiary of Ford has said that it will no longer fit Firestone tyres as OE on its Lazer vehicle and 350 truck. Goodyear tyres will be used instead. Bridgestone/Firestone says that this represents only a 2 per cent loss of sales in the Venezuelan market.
Bridgestone has announced that it will build its third tyre factory in the Chonburi province, in the southeast of Thailand. They will produce radial truck tyres, about 90 per cent of which will be exported to European countries and to the USA. The plant will create about 1,000 jobs.
Bridgestone Corporation has acquired control of a Chinese manufacturer who produces radial passenger and commercial tyres from the Republic of Korea’s Kumho Industrial Co. The company has a current production capacity of about 3.5 million tyres a year.
Since the early 90s, French tyre maker Michelin has continuously lost market share year on year in the passenger car and light truck sectors. The company used to have a 25% market share Europe-wide and this had fallen to 17% last year. According to Michelin, prices were too high vis-a-vis those of major competitors and were no longer competitive, as the end user is prepared to pay only around 10-15% more for a premium product. The necessary price cuts can only be achieved if the company is able to increase productivity. Market experts are convinced that the productivity of Bridgestone/Firestone exceeds that of Michelin by 40%. Michelin is currently undergoing a restructuring programme which will lead to the job losses – or at least early retirement – of around 10% of the European workforce over the next three or four years. Jean Michel Coulon (52), head of the passenger and light truck tyre division in Europe expressed confidence in talks with this magazine that the erosion of market share has now been halted once and for all. Coulon made it clear that he is not aiming to gain market share – his goal is to stop the erosion of market share, to implement an effective multi-brand strategy, to improve the product mix and, finally, to avoid a price war.
Bridgestone CEO Yoichiro Kaizaki has announced that, currently, 4.2 million of the total of 6.5 million tyres that were involved in the Firestone recall have been exchanged. The complete recall will be completed in November, much earlier than was previously announced. In August Firestone estimated that the recall would take until the summer of next year.
In 1994 Michelin presented the prototype 445/45 R 19.5 XTA truck tyre. Bridgestone has just announced in Tokyo the introduction of such an ultra low ratio tyre under the name “GREATEC”. The tyre is available in sizes 495/45 R 22.5 for trucks and 435/45 R 22.5 for buses.
Bridgestone/Firestone has announced that it is to recall 62,000 tyres sold in the Venezuelan market at an estimated cost of US$ 6.4 m. The tyres have been linked with 60 deaths in the country. The consumer protection agency is recommending investigation into charges of possible criminal negligence against Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone, plus a number of civil law suits are planned.
The US Senate, last night approved legislation prompted by the Bridgestone Firestone tyre recall. The new measures strengthen reporting requirements for automotive related manufacturers. The enforcement powers given to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration allow them to impose civil and criminal penalties for misleading the government about auto defects which result in death and injury. The maximum civil penalty for violations has been raised from $925,000 to $15M, and prison terms of up to 15 years have been prescribed, alongside fines of up to $100,000 for withholding information in cases where death occurs. The legislation instruct NHTSA to conduct tests into SUV safety and issue rules requiring the fitting of safety devices to warn drivers of underinflated tyres.
While Toyo shares dropped at the end of April/beginning of May, those of two other Japanese manufacturers, Bridgestone and Yokohama, gained. The share prices of Continental, Cooper, Goodyear and Michelin too.
President of Nissan Carlos Ghosn has said that the company will continue to use Bridgestone/Firestone as an original equipment tyre supplier.
As soon as the merger between Volvo and Renault has received final approval from the US competition authority, Volvo will cut down the number of suppliers. It is said that one of the big three (Bridgestone, Michelin and Goodyear), which are suppliers of truck tyres, could lose the business.
In the fourth week of 2000 the share prices of the tyre manufacturers Bridgestone, Continental, Cooper and Goodyear have hit a 52 weeks’ low. In this week alone, Toyo Tyres fell 10%, Bridgestone 6% and Goodyear 5%. Just a week before Toyo had marked an increase of 12% while again Goodyear (-8%), Michelin (-8%) and Cooper (-8%) did not fare so well.
Kenji Shibata (61), President and Chairman of Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. (BFS) in North America, retired effective June 30, 2000. Corporate duties of the office of President will be assumed by Masatoshi Ono, Chairman and CEO of BFS.
Investigations at Bridgestone/Firestone plants in the US have revealed no major production process problems, according to Yochiro Kaizaki, company president. He also admitted that there may not have been up to standard and that, “the probability of low safety tyres may be higher”. Speaking of the alleged tyre related accidents, Mr. Kaizaki added that, “even with experts involved, it is hard to determine whether it is design, production, driving or car related. If we are asked if the tyres are defective, we can say that legally there are no defects”. In spite of this statement there are signs that Bridgestone/Firestone are preparing to make out of court settlements with alleged victims.
The motorcycle industry started the millennium season on an optimistic note, when the “MOTORRÄDER” Fair at Dortmund opened on 1st March. Not only motorcycle manufacturers showed their new products for the year 2000, but on the total 409 stands in eight exhibition halls clothes, service and accessories were also represented. Figures produced by the German Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (IVM) confirm the abiding popularity of the motorised two-wheeler: The 187,192 new motorcycle registrations are equivalent to 6.4 p.c. growth over 1998. Not least among the accessories one must mention tyres – thus tyre manufacturers also had cause to rejoice. The industry was represented by Bridgestone, Cooper-Avon, Dunlop, Metzeler/Pirelli, Michelin and the Heidenau tyre factory showing their current products, but Continental was absent this time. Some old friends from the service sector had also turned up, among them several local companies but also Stinnes. Maybe “old” is not the right word for Stinnes. After its acquisition (together with Gummi Mayer) by the Danish Viborg group/the British Legal & General Ventures Ltd. the Stinnes/Mayer trade and service enterprises made their Fair début under the same corporate identity.
