Bridgestone RFT Training Programme Gathers Momentum

Bridgestone has underlined its commitment to educate tyre dealers and fitters about run-flat technology after registering a near 20 per cent increase in participants on its Run-Flat Certificate Programme. A total of 237 dealerships are now certified to replace run-flat tyres after completing the free training scheme – an 18.5 per cent increase in numbers in the first quarter of 2006.

“With a growing number of manufacturers fitting run-flat tyres as original equipment, its vital tyre technicians are up to speed about the technology,” said Paul Turner, Bridgestone UK’s technical training manager.

Bridgestone UK Marketing Analyst

Bridgestone UK has promoted Raj Sangha to the role of marketing analyst, replacing Sally Whittall, who recently took up the role of area sales manager for the Midlands. Raj Sangha has worked at Bridgestone UK for more than three years as a query controller, where she was responsible for relaying pricing structures and discounts to the sales teams. She now joins the marketing team where she will help determine the company’s pricing policies.

Nokian Tyres AGM

Nokian Tyres Annual General Meeting accepted the profit and loss statement for 2005 and discharged the Board of Directors and the President from liability. A decision was made on a dividend of 0.23 euros per share. The matching date will be 11 April 2006 and the payment date 20 April 2006.

Bridgestone UK Adds to Training Team

Bridgestone UK has strengthened its training team by appointing Phil Thirsk (52) to the role of technical training manager, where he will work alongside fellow manager Paul Turner. Thirsk has more than 35 years’ experience in the tyre industry; having started his career in the 1970s as a tyre fitter at ATS, he spent 20 years working at Goodyear in a variety of roles, including service manager for mileage contracts, and spent four years based in Brussels, working at Bandag Incorporated.

Masked Gunmen Steal Truckloads of Tyres

(Akron/Tire Review) News reports from Ontario say that three masked men ambushed and stole two tractor-trailers loaded with tyres from a Bridgestone/Firestone warehouse in Mississauga, Ont. Local police are looking for witnesses in the robbery, which occurred in the wee hours of April 1. According to reports, a security guard at the facility was jumped by three armed men wearing masks. He was thrown to the ground and tied up, and the suspects drove off with the two trucks.

Vredestein Hi-Trac Test Successes

Vredestein Hi-Trac tyres bested those of its international competitors – including those manufactured by Goodyear, Continental, Pirelli and Bridgestone in independent tests which compared braking distances, overall speed & handling and resistance to aquaplaning on wet roads. The tyre took first place on average in 10 tests.

Nokian Tyres Renewed its Truck Tyre Range

In 2005 the production of all Nokian-branded truck tyres was transferred to the Bridgestone plant in Bilbao, Spain, which features top-notch production technology in the field. The tyre carcasses and moulds of the whole product portfolio have been redesigned. The new carcass clearly enhances driving properties and mileage, while the sturdy bead area makes the tyre sit well on the rim and improves driving qualities. In addition, the longer useful life of the tyre carcass and the strong rubber used in tread grooves clearly enhance retreading options, writes Nokian in a press release. All Nokian truck tyres feature rubber compounds suitable for Nordic conditions, which provide good grip on slippery roads and durability on rough road surfaces. The new Nokian NTR-861 and Nokian NTR-844 for trucks and buses round off the range and offer a safe and durable solution for year-round use. These winter-rated M+S tyres can be mounted on the vehicle all year round.

New CEO for Bridgestone Europe

From 1st April 2006, Takashi Urano becomes Chairman, CEO and President of Bridgestone Europe (BSEU). He succeeds Minekazu Fujimura, who is retiring. Mr. Urano joined Bridgestone in 1974, soon after graduating in economics from Keio University, Japan. By 1999, he had risen to become General Manager of the Asia and Oceania Division – and, a few months later, took over as General Manager of the China Department. At the beginning of 2004, he was appointed Director of the Middle East, Africa and Russia Division.

Bridgestone Sponsors Safety Design Award

Bridgestone Europe has announced that it will sponsor a new category – Best Safety Innovation – in the Interior Motives Design Awards in 2006. Organised by the automobile design magazine Interior Motives, the annual awards promote the importance of innovation in vehicle design by challenging design students from around the world to make their mark on future car design. Winners are rewarded with prizes and the chance to receive recognition from top figures in the international automotive design community.

Bridgestone Announces US, Canadian Price Increases

(Akron/Tire Review) Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire (BFNAT) and Bridgestone/Firestone Canada Inc. (BFCA) have announced price increases on Bridgestone, Firestone, Dayton, associate and private brand tyre lines. Passenger and light truck, medium truck and bus, ag and OTR tire prices will increase up to 5 per cent. Replacement, OE and export channels are affected by the increases, which take effect 1 May.

Ryder Extends Contract With Bridgestone and Truck Point

Bridgestone and Ryder have announced a further extension to their partnership. This involves a contract extension well into 2007. Under the arrangement, Bridgestone UK will supply replacement and retread truck tyres and tyre services though its national Truck Point service network.

Greg Ward, Bridgestone UK Commercial director, said: “Our long-term relationship with Ryder and our ability to offer a comprehensive service package of original equipment, replacement and retreaded tyres as well as value-added services are key to this new agreement. We are delighted that our partnership with Ryder has been extended again.”

Tyre Care Plus Chain Launched in Oman

Towell Auto Centre, the sole representative for Bridgestone tyres has established a nationwide chain of retail outlets in Oman, branded as ‘Tyre Care Plus.’ According to AMEInfo.com, “these exclusive outlets are redefining tyre retailing.” In a very clear and focussed marketing strategy and keeping in line with their ‘Closer to Customer’ concept, Towell Auto Centre has expanded to thirteen Tyre Care Plus outlets in the country. The first outlet was set up in 1999 at Wadi Kabir, which was known as ‘Bridgestone Tyre Service Centre’. Later a need to brand these exclusive outlets led to the conception of ‘Tyre Care Plus’ in 2005.

Tyres Will Decide F1 Title, says Alonso

Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso says his expected battle with Michael Schumacher this year’s title is likely to come down to a battle of the tyres. Alonso’s team (Renault), Honda and McLaren are all Michelin-shod teams, while their Bridgestone supply rivals Toyota, Williams and Ferrari. But it is Ferrari that have Alonso worried. “Ferrari’s success will depend on their tyres. We saw that in Bahrain. The Bridgestone worked very well – Schumacher was fighting for victory and Williams did the fastest lap of the race,” said Alonso.

Dunlop Bike Tyre Scores Well in Second Test

The new Dunlop Sportmax Qualifier scored another significant victory in its second major international comparative tyre test; this time by German magazine PS.

The test confirmed the result published last month carried out by US magazine, Sport Rider, which compared the top road tyres on the market. The Dunlop Sportmax Qualifier was pitched against the latest offerings from Michelin, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Avon, Metzeler and Continental in a gruelling assessment of traction, braking, steering response and general handling qualities.

Bridgestone Launches New Dueler H/P Sport Tyre

Bridgestone has launched a new high-performance 4×4/SUV tyre. According to the manufacturer, the Dueler H/P Sport is the first 4×4 tyre in its portfolio to be derived from Formula One technology.

The tyre has been designed to give driving precision and comfort to the increasing number of powerful sports utility vehicles (SUVs) on UK roads today. With many new SUVs now capable of speeds of more than 140mph, Bridgestone UK’s marketing manager Andy Lane believes it is vital that these vehicles have suitable tyres.
