Red Bull Sets Practice Pace in Japan

Bridgestone’s soft tyre took Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel to the fastest lap of the sinuous Suzuka Circuit on the first day of the Japanese Grand Prix today. The German set a 1:31.465 lap time in the afternoon session after earlier setting the fastest time with the hard tyre in the morning. Bridgestone director of Motorsport Tyre Development, Hirohide Hamashima said that both compounds for the race were looking “strong”, but that wet tyres would also come into play at some point over the weekend.

Bridgestone’s Hispania Burgos Plant wins Mobility Week Award

European Mobility Week is an EU backed awareness raising campaign aiming at “sensibilising citizens to the use of public transport, cycling, walking and at encouraging European cities to promote these modes of transport and to invest in the new necessary infrastructures.” Held between September 16 and 22, the 2010 event attracted the attention of national and local authorities throughout the region, and cities and businesses that excelled in a particular area were awarded for their accomplishments. One such award recipient is Bridgestone, whose Hispania Burgos Plant won Spain’s European Mobility Week Award for “Best Practices”. This award, the tyre maker comments, recognises Bridgestone’s policies in the area of sustainable mobility and its commitment to raising awareness for the impact of how we move on both the environment and quality of life generally.

Techking Increasing Emphasis on European Markets

Chinese tyre manufacturer Techking is expanding its emphasis on European markets with the appointment of local staff to manage and develop continental markets including the UK. Speaking at Brityrex 2010, new European sales and marketing director Vincent Van Houtte told Tyres & Accessories that the company is serious about investing in Europe. Van Houtte joined Techking during the last quarter following years of experience at Bridgestone Europe and Solideal including passenger car, two-wheel and OTR tyre related roles. He joins a year after the firm appointed Samuel Hermanssen as vice-president Europe. Hermansson, who is Swedish, brings with him 20 years of experience of work at premium tyre manufacturers such as Continental.

Bridgestone Unveils Latest Addition to Battlax Range

Bridgestone has introduced its latest motorcycle tyre at the Intermot exhibition in Cologne, Germany. Called the Battlax BT-016 Pro Hypersport, the radial sports tyre is described by the manufacturer as a product incorporating “a number of advanced technologies developed by Bridgestone in MotoGP.” The end result, says Bridgestone, is a successful combination of excellent durability and superior performance on both dry and wet surfaces. Designed specifically for larger-sized sports motorcycles such as supersport and naked bikes, the line-up includes one front tyre and three rear tyre sizes.

Stoner Takes Second Straight Victory at Motegi

Ducati Team’s Casey Stoner took his second victory in a row today at Motegi from third on the grid, catapulting himself into an early lead that he never relinquished, despite pressure throughout from pole man Andrea Dovizioso of Repsol Honda who crossed the line in second. In third, Valentino Rossi was victorious in a tooth-and-nail battle with his Fiat Yamaha teammate, Jorge Lorenzo after trading paint in the closing stages of what was the most nail-biting fight of the race.

Solidarity Union Reaches Deal with South African Tyre Makers

An agreement has been reached between South African trade union Solidarity and the local Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop and Goodyear operations. The union, which represents around 1,000 tyre industry workers in the bargaining council for the New Tyre Manufacturing Industry Association, released a statement on October 1 reporting the deal, which is being implemented retrospectively from July 1, 2010.

Bridgestone Bandag Re-Launches US Fleet Solutions Website

The trucktires.com website operated by Bridgestone Bandag Tire Solutions (BBTS) in the US is being re-launched, and in addition to providing solutions and advice to help fleet customers increase tyre life and increase cost per mile the site also serves as a portal to the local Bridgestone, Bandag, Firestone and Dayton websites. BBTS comments that, via this portal, visitors will be able to find precisely the right tyre and retread products, locate the nearest dealer and access emergency road service.

South African Tyre Employees Returning to Work

Strike action at Apollo, Continental and Goodyear’s factories in South Africa has ended and workers are scheduled to resume work on September 30. The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa says the month-long strike, which arose following stalled negotiations with New Tyre Manufacturing Industry Employers' Association, has been resolved following the decision to revise pay structures for tyre industry workers.

‘Strong Presence’ for Bridgestone at Paris Show

Bridgestone promises to have a “strong presence” at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, which opens to the public on October 2. The tyre maker is an original equipment supplier to all major French car manufacturers, and at the Bridgestone stand (Hall 1, Booth 550D, for those of you planning a jaunt across the Channel) visitors will be able to see Bridgestone’s prêt a porter range worn by some of France’s top models, including the new Citroën DS3 and Peugeot 207 SW Outdoor.

F1: Tyre Durability Helps Webber Stay Top as Alonso Claims Victory

While Fernando Alonso’s win for Ferrari makes the Spanish former-champion the man to watch in the last few races of the season, Mark Webber’s third place at the Singapore Grand Prix, which helped him open up an 11-point gap at the top of the Drivers Championship, was eye-catching for tyre-based reasons, as Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development director Hirohide Hamashima explained: “Mark showed the durability of the medium compound by completing almost all of the race distance on the same set of tyres. Not only did Mark’s tyres continue to deliver strong performance, but they also withstood the contact with Lewis [Hamilton]. In this contact the front right tyre sidewall was pushed out of alignment with the rim, yet it retained its inner pressure for the rest of the race. We can say that this tyre displayed true Japanese grit today.”

Advanced ID Supplies RFID to Bridgestone/Bandag Brazil

Bridgestone/Bandag in Brazil has purchased RFID tyre badges and UHF RFID readers from Advanced ID Corporation. According to a company statement announcing the news, this first order has been shipped, delivered and paid for. Advanced ID expects to receive larger additional orders from Bridgestone for tyre badges and readers as the program is rolled out. This initial deal is said to be the result of a year of Advanced ID and Bridgestone working together to ensure that “the Bridgestone RFID tyre management system is ready for full commercial introduction.”

European Launch for Bridgestone Ecopia Truck Range

In early September, Bridgestone released its latest European market Ecopia passenger car tyre. The introduction of this environment-oriented product has now been followed up with the European launch of an Ecopia truck tyre range. At the IAA Commercial Vehicle show in Hannover, Germany, Bridgestone Europe CEO Mac Ohashi formally announced the line-up’s debut in our region.

Singapore GP to Provide Public Road Challenge for Bridgestone

Bridgestone Motorsport will take its medium and super soft Potenza tyres to the fifteenth round of the Formula One season, the spectacular night race that is the Singapore Grand Prix on 24-26 September. The race takes place around the streets of the Marina Bay area of the city of Singapore and has provided exciting races in each of its previous two attempts. With the Drivers Championship delicately balanced between five potential champions and the less predictable track conditions offered by public roads, tyre strategy could once again provide a crucial tipping point in the direction of the podium places.

Bridgestone Celebrates F1 Partnership in Monza

With 14 years of tyre supply soon to end, Bridgestone Europe celebrated its Formula One partnership at its final race within the region. On September 10, during the Italian Grand Prix weekend, more than 170 guests from Formula 1 racing teams, the press and Bridgestone companies attended the Paddock Club event, the centre piece of which was a question and answer session with leading F1 personalities including Bridgestone past and present champions Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. Racing team principals Martin Whitmarsh of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, Ross Brawn of Mercedes GP Petronas and Stefano Domenicali of Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro joined the drivers on stage while a host of fellow team principals and senior team management also added their weight to the occasion.

Bridgestone Restructuring European Organisation

A desire to provide customers with a more efficient and professional service is the given reason behind Bridgestone Europe’s decision to restructure its organisation. A series of changes have been planned and Bridgestone is already working at introducing these; the company aims to have the restructured organisation fully operational by January 1, 2011. Significant changes to be implemented include the division of responsibility for sales functions into six geographical regions, each with its own regional headquarters that will operate under the overall control of Bridgestone’s European headquarters in Brussels. A reorganisation will also be undertaken at the Brussels headquarters; Bridgestone says this should result in better operational support being given to the regional sales companies in specialised areas.
