Chiswick First Stop dealer revamps outlet on high performance demand

A Chiswick-based tyre dealership has diversified to capitalise on its recent success in the high performance segment. Iverson Tyres realised a trend of more customers wanting HP tyres, while fewer were visiting for MOTs and servicing. The company says it underwent an extensive retail development programme, supported by Bridgetone’s First Stop network, to re-focus the company. Iverson Tyres is now a “High Performance Fast Fit Tyre Centre”, combining premium brand tyres with improved in-store customer service, the company says. Bridgestone is also helping the dealership develop its website with a view to generating increased e-Commerce.

Bridgestone Battlax bike tyre awarded Motorrad honours

Following its victory in the German PS motorcycle sports magazine tyre tests on 5 May, Bridgestone’s Battlax BT-016 Pro Hypersport is back on the podium again, singled out by Germany’s Motorrad magazine as the “best motorcycle sports tyre in the rain” and joint overall winner of its 2011 sports tyre test. Motorrad tested two 2011 newcomers, including the redesigned Battlax BT-016 Pro, against the best tyres from 2010 in a comparative evaluation of 180/55 tyres on a Honda CBR 600RR on the race circuit, open road and wet track.

UK vehicle industry boosted by £500 million BMW investment

Britain’s vehicle manufacturing industry has received welcome news from BMW, whose plan to invest £500 million in its Mini assembly plant in Oxford plus in its Swindon and Birmingham sites will safeguard some 5,000 UK jobs. The German manufacturer announced this investment during a Downing Street meeting between leading vehicle manufacturers and the Prime Minister. During the meeting, Mr. Cameron told industry representatives that “we really want to see the automotive industry flourish and we are determined to do the things to help it succeed.”

Servicing Stop branches out into online tyre retailing

Servicing Stop, the online vehicle servicing company that gained national prominence through its founders’ appearance on BBC Two’s ‘Dragons’ Den’ in 2009, has entered the online tyre retail business with its new website, Good4tyres.co.uk. In announcing the new venture’s launch, Servicing Stop states this will be “another customer centric endeavour” from entrepreneurs Oly and Toby Richmond.

New marketing role to oversee Bridgestone Americas’ consumer business

A new position – chief marketing officer – has been created at Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, and as of June 6 Philip Dobbs is serving in this role. Dobbs takes on responsibility for leading the development and implementation of an integrated marketing strategy for the company’s U.S. & Canada Consumer Tire division and for ensuring consistency between the strategy and Bridgestone’s brand image.

Stoner triumphs in tricky conditions at Catalunya

Casey Stoner used the harder rear compound Potenza to win from second on the grid for the Repsol Honda Team ahead of Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies in a double podium for the Yamaha Factory Racing team. The Catalunya Grand Prix weekend was punctuated by rain showers, and heavy rain overnight left the circuit soaked for the morning’s warm-up session, which was the first time this season that Bridgestone’s hard compound wet tyres have been used. The circuit dried through the day however and the MotoGP race was run in the dry, although rain threatened at the midway point of the race and the white flags came out as drops fell in the last sector of the circuit.

Bridgestone to invest in Costa Rica production and services

Two planned investments will increase Bridgestone’s presence in Costa Rica: The local subsidiary of Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO), Bridgestone de Costa Rica, has announced the company’s new Financial Shared Services Center for the Latin American Region is to be located in the Central American country. Bridgestone also confirmed it will invest US$70 million in its La Ribera de Belen tyre factory in Heredia province over the next five years.

Bridgestone Europe announces Q3 price rises

A further round of price increases will be implemented by Bridgestone Europe during the third quarter of 2011. The tyre maker states that, starting July 1, prices for truck and bus radials will rise by an average of 12 per cent, agricultural, off-road tyres and retreads by an average of eight per cent, while an increase averaging five per cent is planned for passenger car, 4×4, light commercial vehicle and motorcycle tyres.

Bridgestone previews Catalan MotoGP

Bridgestone will take its medium and hard front and asymmetric rear slick compounds to the Circuit de Catalunya for the 5 June running of the Catalan Grand Prix, MotoGP’s fifth round of the 2011 season. The tyre manufacturer anticipates one of the toughest races of the year for its rear tyres because of the very high tyre temperature generated by the predominantly right-handed layout of the circuit; it has eight right-handers, most of which are fast and flowing. It is specifically turn three and the last three corners that generate the high rear tyre temperature as they are fast and long and the tyres spend a lot of time leant over on their right side. Turn three is also uphill so riders open the throttle earlier to maximise drive on the incline.

Michelin tops Japan customer satisfaction survey. Again

For an eighth consecutive year, Michelin has come up trumps in J.D. Power Asia Pacific’s survey of customer satisfaction amongst winter tyre users in Japan. The French tyre maker has held this distinction in every Japan Winter Tire Customer Satisfaction Index Study since the first was held seven years ago; in 2011 it performed “particularly well” in all six tested factors and scored 653 points out of a possible 1,000; second-placed brand Bridgestone was, with 609 points, also ranked above the industry average of 583 points. Trailing in last place for customer satisfaction in the eight-brand study was Falken, with 515 points.

Mini supply first BMW OEM for Hankook

As of late June, Hankook will begin delivering its tyres as original equipment on the Mini. The BMW owned manufacturer will be supplied with the Ventus Prime from the tyre maker’s plants in South Korea under what Hankook calls a “prestigious cooperation;” the company further notes that with this BMW deal it is now successfully competing against tyre makers such as Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear and Continental.

Bridgestone presents new commercial vehicle, passenger car TPMS

At this year’s eSafety Challenge, which begins in Vienna on May 30, Bridgestone will present and demonstrate two new tyre pressure monitoring systems. The patented commercial system that Bridgestone will demonstrate features a valve containing a built-in radio frequency unit that screws onto the valve stem; a passenger car version integrated to a snap-in valve will also be demonstrated.

“Kumho has arrived” following tyre test, says Australian MD

Kumho Tyre Australia reports critics had a surprise in store for them when the results of the annual Wheels Magazine Tyre Test were announced. The publication, which has provided Australian motorists with authoritative information for 58 years, gave the Kumho KU39 a ‘podium placing’ by ranking it a close third behind two much more expensive European tyres. Furthermore, Kumho notes, the KU39 “finished ahead of well established and respected Japanese brands in the gruelling and uncompromising Wheels test, making it arguably the best value performance tyre on the Australian market.”

Aston Martin refers to its V8 Vantage S as a “driver-focused” vehicle: “The Vantage S epitomises every attribute of the V8 Vantage and pushes the driver experience beyond what we have offered before,” exclaims Dr. Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin, “It combines dynamic exhilaration with all the charming finesse, beauty and practicality already associated with the Vantage range.” Bridgestone is thus pleased its Potenza RE050A has been selected as original equipment on the freshly released coupé and roadster. The Bridgestone tyre is fitted to the 430hp Aston Martin in size 245/40 on the front wheels and 285/35 on the rear.

Lassa Tyres signs Bolton Wanderers partnership

Turkey-based manufacturer Lassa Tyres has finalised a partnership agreement with Barclays Premier League football team Bolton Wanderers for next season. Turkey’s Brisa Bridgestone Sabanci, which manufactures Lassa tyres is the country’s number one tyre producer, and the seventh largest in Europe. The company said Bolton’s position as a successful and established member of the top tier of English football – next season will be the eleventh consecutive year that the club will compete in the Premier League – was a major attraction for the brand. The partnership was brokered by London based Samson Sport Consultancy, who have also secured contracts for Lassa Tyres in their other key markets.
