Bulldog certification concludes Bridgestone’s European ISO programme

Bridgestone reports its ISO 14001 certification for all its European tyre plants has been completed one year ahead of its own internal target. The final certification was granted to its commercial vehicle tyre retreading subsidiary, Lincolnshire-based Bulldog Remoulds Ltd, in August 2011. This means that, some 12 years after the tyre maker began its European certification programme, all 13 Bridgestone Group plants in Europe employing more than 50 people are now ISO 14001 certified.

Rugby tyre firm wins Bridgestone event

TW Tyres from Rugby has won the national final of Bridgestone’s First Stop Karting event held at Daytona Milton Keynes. The team claimed the prize after almost three hours of intense racing in the pouring rain at the famous outdoor circuit, beating 15 other teams in the process.

Further Bridgestone US expansion plans unveiled

This has been a red-letter week for Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations. On Wednesday the tyre maker went public with its plans to construct a large and ultra-large OTR tyre plant in South Carolina, Bridgestone’s first outside of Japan, and to increase passenger car and light truck tyre capacity at its Aiken County plant, located in the same state. A day later it announced that bus and truck tyre capacity will also be lifted; Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO) said it will invest US$36.6 million to increase production capacity at its Warren County, Tennessee plant by 900 units per day.

Bridgestone names US OTR plant project leader

The new OTR factory Bridgestone plans to build in the US will ultimately create around 550 jobs – the first of these has already been announced. Steve Brooks, previously vice-president of Information at Bridgestone Americas, has been named chief project officer for Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations. This new position was created specifically for leading the new plant’s construction and start-up. Brooks’ former position has been filled by Diane E. Drum, who before joining Bridgestone was president and chief information officer at Gerdau Ameristeel.

Bridgestone to increase European prices in Q4

A new round of Bridgestone Europe price rises will be rolled out in the fourth quarter of 2011. On October 1 prices for agricultural tyres will increase by an average of four per cent, while winter passenger, light commercial vehicle and 4×4 tyre prices will go up by an average of five per cent. Commenting on decision to increase prices, Mitsuhira Shimazaki, senior vice-president of Sales and Marketing at Bridgestone Europe, said that these two product groups “still require efforts to fully compensate for the raw materials hikes that we have suffered in the last two years.”

Details of Bridgestone’s ‘major strategic investment’ announced

A total of around US$1.2 billion dollars will be invested in Bridgestone’s Aiken County site in the United States. The tyre maker’s plans for this South Carolina location involve both increasing capacity at its passenger car and light truck tyre plant and erecting a new factory to produce large and ultra-large radials for construction and mining vehicles. Production capacity at Bridgestone’s steel cord plant in Clarksville, Tennessee will also be increased in order to supply this new OTR tyre facility.

Bridgestone to make ‘major’ announcement at South Carolina plant

Amid various rumors that it was going to build another tyre plant there, Tire Review revealed that Bridgestone Americas planned to make a “major economic development” announcement at its plant in Graniteville, South Carolina today. It reported that both Gary Garfield, Bridgestone Americas’ president and CEO, and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley were to be on hand for the announcement.

Two senior Bridgestone appointments announced

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO) has announced two key appointments, both of which take effect immediately. Saul Solomon, previously president of BATO’s US & Canada Commercial Tire Sales division, has been named president of Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations, Latin American Tire Division (BATO LA). Solomon succeeds Humberto Gomez, who announced his retirement from BATO LA last July. Ken Weaver, formerly chief financial officer of Bridgestone Americas, has succeeded Solomon as president of US & Canada Commercial Tire Sales at BATO.

Alongside the introduction of the Run-Flat version of its flagship Potenza S001 UHP sport tyre, Bridgestone announced a run of OE fitments on some of the best known marques. Available in 4 40 to 55 series sizes, Bridgestone Run-Flat Tyres are now fitted right across the BMW and Mini range in Europe, in addition to a large number of models from Audi, Mercedes, Lexus and Volkswagen. Many top sports cars are also equipped with Bridgestone Run-Flats, including Ferrari and Maserati models.

Bridgestone plea bargain in marine hose case

Bridgestone Corp. has entered into a plea agreement regarding its involvement with a bid-rigging scheme in the US and bribery charges in Latin America. According to Tire Review, under the plea agreement, Bridgestone has pleaded guilty to antitrust conspiracy charges and a violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. As a result, the company will pay a $28 million fine, which is said was “a significant reduction from the applicable sentencing guidelines due to Bridgestone’s cooperation and remediation efforts.”

Bridgestone shows CAIS tyre surface sensor technology

Bridgestone Corporation has developed a new technology designed to provide real time road surface condition information to the driver by way of the tyres. The new technology is based on a concept called Contact Area Information Sensing (CAIS) and it was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

An article on the website TruthDive suggests that cars could, in the future, be powered by electrified roadways, thus eliminating car batteries. Masahiro Hanazawa at Toyota Central R and D Labs in Nagakute, Aichi, Japan, and Takashi Ohira at Toyohashi University of Technology, also in Aichi, are developing a system that transmits electric power through steel belts placed inside two tyres and a metal plate in the road.

Kumho sets deal to supply tyres to Midas in USA

Midas stores across the US will soon have access to Kumho brand tyres thanks to a new deal between the service retailer and Kumho Tire USA, reports Tire Review. The new “partnership program” reportedly gives rebates to Midas stores purchasing Kumho tyres, and tyre distributors will get a 1 per cent credit for administering the program.

Bridgestone brings harder wearing front slicks to Aragon MotoGP

In 2010, the Motorland Aragon circuit in the north-east of Spain represented a new challenge for Bridgestone, holding its first premier class motorcycle Grand Prix; this year the tyre supplier, the teams and the riders all have the benefit of last year’s data to call upon. Hiroshi Yamada, manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Department explains: “there was a lot of good feedback from everybody in the paddock. I am pleased that we are going back this year as it is an exciting and quite dramatic circuit, and with the benefit of last year’s experience not only is our job easier as we do not need to conduct more scientific analysis of the circuit and its tarmac, but we can also be very confident of our tyre compound choices.”

World’s first concept tyre design service launched in UK

Industrial design associates, Dolton & Dex, has announced the launch of the world's first concept tyre design service. According to reports, director Bob Dolton has spent many years working on concept tyres for a number of OEMs. "More often than not, it is an area of the vehicle that designers feel they have a lack of control over," said Dolton.
