Car fleets unaware of forthcoming tyre labelling laws

With preparations for the implementation of next year’s tyre labelling laws still very much beginning within the industry, how ready are those in one rung down on the supply ladder in the fleet business? If the latest research is anything to go by, they are some way off the pace for November 2012 implementation of the European rules, with varying levels of understanding of what tyre labels mean. In fact a recent Fleet News survey sponsored by Michelin found that over two-thirds (69%) of the 281 fleet operators who responded are unaware of the forthcoming EU tyre labelling regulations. So will the labelling law make any difference to fleet tyre purchasing?

Brisa 9-month revenues up 36%

Turkish tyre maker Brisa reports a 36 per cent year-on-year rise in revenues between January and September. In a statement released on October 30, the company disclosed it earned some TL942.5 million (₤329.8 million) during the nine-month period. Net profits rose 35 per cent year-on-year over the same timeframe, to approximately TL47,500 (₤16,600) while EBITA grew 41 per cent to TL114 million (₤39.9 million).

Ground broken on Bridgestone US OTR plant

Groundbreaking for Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations' new 1.5 million-square-foot (140,000 square metre) large and ultra-large radial manufacturing facility has taken place at the greenfield site the company selected in Aiken County, South Carolina. The tyre maker also announced further information regarding the start-up team that will take the helm in overseeing construction and hiring efforts. The core team is as follows:

Bridgestone to finish MotoGP season in Simoncelli tribute

Bridgestone travels to Valencia for this MotoGP season’s final round, which the tyre supplier says will be run in tribute to Marco Simoncelli, whose death in Malaysia last week devastated those involved in the series. Hiroshi Yamada, manager at Bridgestone’s Motorsport Department said: “It is with heavy hearts that we travel to Valencia this week for the final round of the season, but that we continue racing is in itself a fitting tribute to Marco. He never gave up, so nor shall we.

‘World’s largest’ agri tyre to debut at Agritechnica

Amongst the exhibits at the upcoming Agritechnica show in Hanover, Germany will be the largest agricultural radial ever produced. This behemoth of the farm is Firestone’s new DT23 in size IF850/75R42. Manufactured by Firestone in the USA, the giant DT23 is designed for the latest generation of 500 plus horsepower heavy tractors. With an overall diameter of 2.32 metres, the DT23 has an 850/75 section/aspect ratio and rim size of 42 inches (107 centimetres). It weighs 510 kilograms and has a load capacity of 9.5 tons at speeds of up to 50 km/h when inflated at 1.6 bar.

Bridgestone donates to Thailand flood aid

Bridgestone Corporation has announced it will donate 50 million yen (£408,000) to assist flood-stricken regions in Thailand. The Japanese manufacturer’s operations in Thailand – Bridgestone runs ten manufacturing facilities there – will also donate funds and food to the value of approximately 3.4 million yen to further aid for those affected by the disaster. Upon announcing these aid measures, the Bridgestone Group expressed its “sincere condolences to those who have suffered from the flood” and wished the nation of Thailand a rapid recovery.

Bridgestone Illinois OTR Plant Getting Enhancements

The Bloomington Pantagraph reports that the Bridgestone Americas OTR tyre plant in that Illinois city is getting a $20 million capital investment. The Bridgestone Firestone Off Road Tire Co. plant’s capacity will be increased and some 40 jobs added, the report said.

Survey: Small car, van and truck fleets as smart as larger fleets when it comes to fuel

Fleets with fewer than 25 cars, vans and trucks apply almost as much control to buying petrol and diesel as those with more than 25 vehicles, according to new research by MIB Data Solutions. The company asked 3003 companies with fewer than 25 vehicles and 616 with more than 25 how they acquired fuel (The results do not total 100 per cent because some use more than one method of purchasing).

Nick Boddington, managing director, said: “The results of this survey are quite surprising. Certainly, we expected a much greater disparity between small and large fleets when it comes to the amount of control they apply to fuel buying but the figures for all the methods of purchasing we investigated are very similar.

US Bridgestone capacity increases will not include aircraft tyres

Bridgestone Americas has clarified that its capacity expansion plans in the USA will not include increased aircraft tyre manufacturing facilities, contrary to reports published on Bloomberg last week. The misunderstanding was a result of the inclusion of aircraft radials in the company’s portfolio of strategic products, published in the corporation’s mid-term management plan on 21 October.

Bridgestone against MOT changes

Bridgestone has added its voice to the argument against the proposed changes to the MOT test schedule, suggesting that the potential 2012 change in the interval from one to two years could compromise road safety. Andy Dingley, communications manager at Bridgestone UK, said: “We know that a large proportion of motorists do not check their tyres regularly, and the MOT has proven to be very effective in highlighting tyre problems. The decision to change the MOT interval to two years throws up a lot of issues, primarily the inevitable increase in mileage between tyre checks.

Bridgestone Motorsport expresses “devastation” over Simoncelli

The tragic events at MotoGP’s Malaysian Grand Prix, at which Italian San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli was killed, have left representatives at tyre supplier Bridgestone Motorsport understandably devastated. Taka Horio, general manager at the department, continued: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Marco’s family at this terrible, terrible time, and with his team. Words can do no justice to the emotion we are all feeling.

Dealers team up with schools in Bridgestone and McConechy’s art contest

Bridgestone and McConechy’s tyre dealerships are running “Re-inventing the Wheel” drawing competition in schools across Scotland. Pupils from schools in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Kirkcaldy are drawing their ideas of how they could reuse tyres from their family cars after they are no longer road safe. Each of the four schools: Sighthill Primary, Giffnock Primary, Merkinch Primary and Torbain Primary are paired with a local McConechy’s dealership.

Annunziato to replace Ohashi as Bridgestone Europe chief

As of 1 January, 2012, Makio “Mac” Ohashi will end his tenure as CEO and president of Bridgestone Europe NV/SA. He will be succeeded in this role by Franco Annunziato, who is now chief quality officer and senior vice-president – technology at Bridgestone Europe as well as managing director of Bridgestone Technical Center Europe S.p.A. After taking on Ohashi’s current duties, Annunziato will remain chief quality officer of Bridgestone Europe and managing director at the Technical Center Europe. Annunziato also serves as a vice-president and officer of Bridgestone Corporation.

TRW introduces new “hybrid” TPMS

TRW Automotive Holdings has launched what it calls a next generation tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). This system uses sensors that are fixed on the tyres for measuring the temperature and pressure inside the tyre.

The technology is based on a hybrid direct system which uses a combination of sensing technologies to provide automatic location of an under-inflated tyre. This data is then combined with the data from the vehicle’s ABS wheel speed sensors and the driver is notified about the location and about the tyres that may have low pressure.
