Translogik receives iProbe order Bridgestone Brazil

Transense sales subsidiary Translogik Limited reports that it has received an order from Bridgestone Brazil iProbe commercial tyre inspection tool. According to the company, Bridgestone began work on integrating the iProbe into its systems in April (see announcement dated 21 April 2011). This work is now complete and, following a successful field trial and positive feedback from Bridgestone's customers, it is anticipated that further orders will follow as part of an on-going deployment programme by Bridgestone.

Bridgestone establishes Americas mining business unit

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations reports it has reorganised the Bridgestone Commercial Group and set up an integrated mining tyre business unit. The new business unit, Bridgestone Mining Solutions, combines all mining tyre sales, service and sales engineering, as well as a select group of US and Canadian stores, into one integrated structure. Shawn Rasey will lead the new organisation as vice-president, Bridgestone Mining Solutions.

Bridgestone introduces Tube Multicell winter tyre compound

Bridgestone has developed what it calls a “next generation” compound for its Blizzak winter tyres designed to grip like a studded tyre. Called Tube Multicell, it contains thousands of microscopic tubular cells and “bite particles.” Together with other technologies, the Tube Multicell compound is applied in the new Blizzak WS70 in a bid to offer motorists superior handling in Nordic winter conditions.

Bridgestone starts 2012 MotoGP testing

Bridgestone has started testing its 2012 MotoGP tyre testing season in Valencia, Spain and Sepang, Malaysia. The company says it has spent the winter completing a programme of intensive development, and the tyre evaluation performed around the world over the next two months will be used to gauge perception among the riders. While six lap records were set on Bridgestone rubber in 2011, feedback from riders suggested that additional safety features needed to be built into new tyres, and Bridgestone Motorsport general manager, Tohru Ubukata says this is where the focus has been.

Point S snubs Michelin in France

The point-S organisation has made the headlines again. Following the dismissal of point S Germany’s managing director Jürgen Benz last December, a move that took many by surprise, point S France now appears to have interesting times ahead as it distances itself from the most important player in the nation’s tyre market: Michelin. French media sources report a “thunderclap in the tyre world,” in which point S in France has failed to reach a consensus with Michelin regarding terms and conditions for the coming year and as a result has excluded tyres sourced directly from the market leader from its range. Michelin reportedly accounted for at least 40 per cent of the point S operation in France’s total turnover, thus market observers view the organisation’s decision as quite a dangerous one. But where exactly lies the danger?

Bridgestone to supply BMW Driving Experience

Bridgestone Europe has signed an exclusivity agreement to supply tyres to BMW Driving Experience, a programme that provides specialised training programmes to improve driver skills and safety. The tyre manufacturer will fit its tyres to the BMW Driving Experience fleet of BMW 1-Series, 3-Series, X5 and X6 vehicles, in addition to the range of high-performance BMW M models.

Bridgestone to support Acorns Children’s Hospice

Bridgestone has announced that it will support Midlands-based Acorns Children’s Hospice in 2012, with fundraising events including a monthly “Dress Down Friday”. The Hospice was established in 1988, providing care for terminally ill youngsters and their families in the Midlands. The Acorns provides tailored nursing, emergency care and short breaks for the children at each of its three hospices in addition to continual support for their families from its highly trained Community Team.

Firestone dusts off ‘Fuel Fighter’ name

Motorists seeking fuel efficient tyres in North America will soon discover a new name attached to Firestone tyres – Fuel Fighter. Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO) has revived the company trademark, which was first used in 1978, and is already affixing it to lower rolling resistance original equipment tyres. The tyre maker says selected replacement market fitments will be introduced in the near future.

Wanted: F1 test car

With the 2012 season on the horizon, Formula One’s tyre supplier is looking towards 2013 to develop its product further; however, developments have hit a road block due to the unavailability of a suitable testing vehicle. Pirelli’s Motorsport director, Paul Hembery told Autosport magazine that its hunt for a 2011 car is being compromised by F1 teams’ hawkish attitude to the possibility of another team gaining an advantage by donating its car to the tyre supplier.

Japanese study stresses value of web presence

The Japanese are changing the way they change their tyres, reports J.D. Power Asia Pacific. The results of the company’s 2011 Japan Replacement Tire Customer Satisfaction Index Study were released on 18 January, and J.D. Power believes they show “replacement tyre shopping behaviour among vehicle owners in Japan is undergoing considerable change.” This change is said to be particularly occurring due to steadily increasing usage of the internet during the shopping process.

Tanvic Group committed to “cornerstone” agricultural market

Independent East Midlands tyre distributor Tanvic Group Ltd operates from eight locations in Newark (its head office), Lincoln, Grantham, Corby, Melton Mowbray, Loughborough, Worksop and Market Harborough. Though Tanvic says it recognises the market has contracted over the last few years, it has met this challenge by increasing the specialist knowledge of its staff, attempting to add value to the service it offers farm customers.

New Bridgestone technology brings colour to tyre sidewalls

Tyres have traditionally been round and black, but Bridgestone is set to change this. The Japanese manufacturer announced on 13 January that it has developed a new printing technology for tyres – a technology Bridgestone calls revolutionary and says differs from any tyre printing or colouring process presently on the market.

Former Bridgestone motorsport boss hired by Ferrari F1

Hirohide Hamashima, formerly manager of Bridgestone’s Motorsport department, has been hired by Ferrari to be the luxury car brand’s Formula One Team tyre development director. Hamashima worked with Bridgestone, which supplied tyres to F1 from 1997, until pulling out at the end of the 2010 season.

Bridgestone raises European retread material prices

Bridgestone Europe is to roll out a new round of price increases for retread materials across Europe during the first quarter of 2012. Starting on 1 March and varying from country to country, price increases will average 10 per cent for Bridgestone and Bandag pre-cure tread products and 8 per cent for Bandag cushion gum products.

New CEO, COO at Bridgestone

Bridgestone Corporation has a new chief executive officer. On 11 January the company’s Board of Directors approved a number of senior personnel changes, including the appointment of Masaaki Tsuya to the role of CEO. Incumbent chairman of the Board, CEO and president Shoshi Arakawa will continue in the position of chairman of the Board, a role Bridgestone says has been “newly redefined”. The tyre maker has not named a successor to Arakawa as president.
