Goodyear Dunlop releases truck fleet carbon calculator

Goodyear Dunlop has launched a new web-based Fuel Efficiency Calculator, modelling the conditions under which Europe’s road haulers operate to predict the effect tyre choice, investments in driver training, and various aerodynamic retrofit solutions will have on fuel bills and companies’ environmental credentials. The calculator was developed alongside Panteia/NEA, which provided detailed market information from across Europe for increased accuracy. It is available free of charge to any European fleet operator or interested person.

Diesel price hits record high

Bad news for hauliers, as the price of diesel has hit a record high having rocketed by 10 pence per litre (ppl) in just 12 months – an inflation-busting 7 per cent rise – reports RMI Petrol.

The increase leaves diesel at 143.05 pence per litre (ppl), a level that could derail Government plans to curb inflation, is a disaster for motorists, and puts the livelihoods of hundreds of fuel retailers at further risk says RMI Petrol Chairman Brian Madderson.

Report – Brazil’s drivers moving to replacement tyres

A recently published report by TechSci Research suggests that the Brazilian replacement tyre market will grow as the country’s increasing prosperity encourages drivers away from retreaded tyres. Karan Chechi, research director with TechSci Research argues: “The Brazilian tyre market is anticipated to grow at a compound annual growth rate of around 13 per cent for the next five years. It is forecast that its replacement tyre market will grow at a much faster pace than anticipated earlier due to the increasing number of automobiles on Brazilian roads, [which is expected] to reach 63 Million units by 2016.”

Bridgestone launches Battlax SC

A new Bridgestone radial for larger scooters is due for release this year – The new Battlax SC will be launched in Japan on 1 April and will also be introduced into other global markets during the course of 2012, including North, Central and South America, Asian and Oceania. In Europe it will be available as a replacement tyre for maxi scooters of 300cc and above.

Bridgestone US plant reaches production milestone

In its 13 years of operation, the Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations plant in Aiken County, South Carolina has manufactured a tyre or two. Or 100 million. On 14 February the 100 millionth tyre rolled off the passenger car and light truck factory’s production line, and the arrival at this milestone was celebrated by company management, workers and invited guests. The tyre at the centre of the festivities is a Bridgestone Dueler A/T RH-S; this particular specimen was signed by guests attending the celebration and will be displayed in the plant’s lobby.

Rising demand prompts further capacity boost for Bridgestone OTR plant

Production capacity of large and ultra-large off the road radials at Bridgestone’s Kitakyushu plant in Japan is to increase in order to meet growing global demand for these products. The tyre maker announced on 16 February that capacity will rise by 20 tons a day to approximately 165 tons in the first half of 2014. Alongside this increase, Bridgestone intends to increase production capacity at its Saga plant, which produces the radial steel cord used in large and ultra-large OTR tyres. As of December 2011 the Saga plant manufactured around 270 tons of steel cord a day; the size of the announced capacity increase was not disclosed in Bridgestone’s 16 February announcement. Approximately 4.7 billion yen (£38.2 million) will be invested in the two projects.

Bridgestone strengthens UK team

Bridgestone UK has strengthened its sales and marketing team with the announcement of new appointments within its consumer and commercial tyre operations. The new structure sees Brett Emerson and Greg Ward extend their current roles as UK consumer sales director and commercial sales director respectively into Ireland. Jackie Wherity, Ireland consumer sales manager, will support Brett Emerson with Greg Ward being supported by Ireland commercial sales manager Frank White.

‘Support…fleet managers’, Bridgestone asks Truck Point network

Supporting truck fleet operators who are already under pressure from high fuel prices and increased competition is crucial over the next 18 months, delegates at Bridgestone’s recent Truck Point conference heard.

Just as Bridgestone is coming under greater pressure to supply tyres which help truck OE manufacturers meet their stringent European legislation on emissions, the network has a responsibility to support operators as they fight to preserve already tight margins in a tough market, according to Greg Ward, commercial sales director, Bridgestone.

Bridgestone offering free industry seminars at CV Show 2012

Bridgestone has announced plans to offer free industry seminars on “some of the hottest topics” on the company’s exhibition area at this year’s CV Show. For the first time, visitors can get advice, hints, tips and join the debate on wheel security (cost and consequences), the future of fuel efficiency and how to save money through improving tyre maintenance. The seminars will run daily during the show, which is being held at Birmingham’s NEC, 24-26 April.

Market view: MTS/Southam on 4×4 tyres

Micheldever Tyre Services distributed in excess of 800,000 4×4 tyres in the UK tyre market in 2011, especially through its Southam division which has a history specialising in the 4×4 sector. According to the company, this makes Southam “probably the largest distributor of 4×4 tyres in Europe.”

Looking forward into 2012, company representatives warn that major changes face the 4×4 market, particularly in the off-road sector, where traditional all-terrain and mud-terrain patterns are being forced to change in the face of increasingly tough noise regulations. And with tyre labelling being rolled out from June this year, followed by mandatory implementation in November before the rules are upgrade a few years later, this trend is set to continue.

Petrol sales plummet 1 billion less barrels sold in 2011

Petrol sales fell significantly during the first three quarters of 2011, according to research conducted by motoring association the AA. And this was no drip drip. On the contrary the AA figures suggest that motorists bought 2.4 billion fewer litres of petrol than the same period in 2008. Total sales of 13.9 billion litres in the first nine months of 2011, a billion litres less than the year before. And drivers are resolved to cut back further during 2012. With petrol prices being a key indicator of miles driven in the UK, the figures have the potential to impact the amount of tyres purchased (sell out) in the tyre market.

Firms still signing up as CV Show offers free tickets

Many truck-related and a number orientated business have signed up to exhibit at April’s CV Show. At the same time the partnership behind the exhibition has announced plans to give away free tickets to visitors that pre-register.

One exhibitor that is keen to make the most of its presence is Continental Automotive which is launching a new marketing initiative for 2012 called “Did You Know?” “The idea behind the campaign is to provide question and answer-style information for Drivers and Operators,” explains Jackie Dougall, marketing manager for VDO.

US favourite for new Michelin plant?

Speculation still exists regarding Michelin’s furtively-named “Project Cougar”, however it appears possible the Felidae plan may find a home in Anderson County, a location in the US state of South Carolina where the tyre maker already employs some 700 workers. Michelin North America has been named as the company considering setting up two projects in the area. Should they go head in Anderson County, these projects would be established with an investment said to be at least US$550 million and likely to be in the “$600 million to $1 billion” range if built according to plan.

Become a tyre ‘genius’ with Bridgestone training

Those wishing for a greater mastery over the tyre business may benefit from a new bespoke training course Bridgestone UK is starting to roll out. The tyre maker says it intends to create industry-renowned ‘tyre geniuses’ with expertise across all aspects of the tyre sector through its training, which it calls the Genius Training Development programme. According to Bridgestone, the Genius Training Development programme is the first of its kind to provide a clearly defined development structure and is the most comprehensive of its type within the industry. The programme was launched on 31 January, with 30 people from a broad spectrum of tyre companies taking part in the inaugural training sessions.
