High performance cars require high performance tyres – obviously. What’s not quite as obvious is that today’s tough market conditions are sharpening the motorist’s eye for real value and service – especially in the more discerning and therefore challenging high performance tyre market, which increasingly demands ‘high performance service’ to match. Bridgestone provides asymmetric MotoGP tyre for Le Mans

Bridgestone is at Le Mans this weekend for the fourth round of the 2012 season, where it will provide an asymmetric rear tyre to deal with the demands of the circuit’s emphasis on right-hand turns. Hiroshi Yamada, manager at Bridgestone’s Motorsport Department, said: “Le Mans is a special place to visit with the large crowds and history of the venue combining to create a unique atmosphere and over the years the French GP has provided some very challenging races due to the poor weather conditions encountered at this time of year.

Bridgestone to quit electronic paper business

In order to place a greater focus upon its core businesses, Bridgestone has elected to withdraw from the electronic paper market. The company also indicates that increasing competition and rapidly declining prices in the liquid crystal panel business played a role in its decision. At present the exact timing for Bridgestone’s exit from the business has yet to be determined, however the Japanese manufacturer says it expects to conclude its production of electronic paper by the end of October 2012.

Bridgestone net income up 35% in Q1

For the first quarter of 2012, Bridgestone has reported net sales of ¥726.2 billion (£5.6 billion), a three per cent increase over the first quarter of fiscal 2011. The company’s operating income amounted to ¥63.0 billon (£490.0 million), an increase of 13 per cent, ordinary income was ¥61.7 billion (£479.9 million), an increase of ten per cent, and net income was ¥42.2 billion (£328.2 million), a year-on-year increase of 35 per cent.

New plant manager for Bridgestone Americas’ Warren County plant

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations has appointed Mitch Burke plant manager at its Warren County, Tennessee truck and bus tyre factory. Burke has been with Bridgestone Americas since 1989, starting his career as a junior engineer at the Warren County plant. Subsequently, he served in numerous engineering and management roles of increasing responsibility, including positions as quality coordinator, section manager, operations manager, area business manager, division manager of Truck Bus Radial Technical Services, and, most recently, division manager, Operations.

Latin American & Caribbean Tire Expo increases space by 60%

The Latin American & Caribbean Tyre Expo 2012 has reported an increase in its exhibitor list by 60 per cent, with the addition of two new halls to the existing space at the Atlapa Convention Center in Panama. The four-day show and conference will celebrate its third anniversary when it opens on July 25, 2012, with over 160 exhibitors signed up thus far, including Bridgestone, Triangle, Double Coin, JK Tornel, Titan International, CEAT, and “platinum sponsor”, Sailun Tire. “Our vision is to bring global manufacturers and suppliers directly to the Latin markets and to get the Latin dealers to those manufacturers in a familiar venue,” said show director, Linda Bassitt.

Tribunal confirms Maxiprest penalty

South Africa’s Competition Tribunal has confirmed a 9.356 million rand (£721,712.31, 899,154 euros, US$7,241,070) penalty handed down to Maxiprest Tyres by the Competition Commission for “price fixing, division and allocation of markets and collusive tendering”, according to local news reports.

Bridgestone expands ranges/introduces elite programme at INTERMAT 2012

Bridgestone Europe presented a strong line-up of off-the-road tyres at INTERMAT 2012, according to the company. The international fair for construction industries, which took place in Paris from 16 – 21 April saw the Japanese manufacturer display the world’s largest tyre and some of its leading OTR industrial radial tyres.

Products on show included: The VJT (V-Steel J-Traction); VRF (V-Steel Rock Fast); VLTS (V-Steel L-Traction S); VSW (V-Steel Snow Wedge); VCHR (V-Steel Container Handler Rib) and VSDT (V-Steel Super Deep Traction).

Bridgestone Truck Point hits record call out response times

Sometimes punctures are unpreventable. That is why Bridgestone UK is so pleased by its latest breakdown response times. According to the company, the figures show average call out response times of 48 minutes anywhere in the UK – day or night.

The network has more than 300 independent outlets and 1,000 service staff that are trained specifically on servicing truck tyres, reassuring customers that it can properly provide service cover across Europe.

Bridgestone expanding Bloomington, US plant

Work has begun on a US$19.5 million expansion project at Bridgestone America Tire Operations’ Bloomington OTR plant in Illinois, USA, the tyre maker reports. The project is expected to be completed in mid-2013, and most of the investment is being directed towards the purchase and installation of new machinery. Additional capacity realised through the project will primarily go to the production of tyres used in heavy industry, and Bridgestone says at least 40 new jobs are expected to result from the plant expansion.

Bridgestone research reveals driver cut backs

A survey of British motorists found that almost two thirds of drivers are opting to leave their cars behind to travel by other means in order to save money, Bridgestone UK research has revealed. The research, commissioned by the tyre manufacturer, found that 65 per cent of people have stopped using their car so often in an effort to save money and 67 per cent are encouraging their families to walk more as part of a wider cost cutting exercise.

Stoner first as Jerez offers MotoGP “every track condition”

Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner scored his first MotoGP victory at Jerez after fending off Factory Yamaha Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo in a closely contested Spanish GP. Masao Azuma, chief engineer at tyre supplier Bridgestone’s Motorsport Tyre Development Department, said: “I am happy with how both our wet and slick tyres performed at Jerez in what were very challenging operating conditions.”

Pirelli in-season F1 tyre testing at Mugello

While the Formula One season currently involves 20 long weekends across most of the world’s continents – Africa and Antarctica continue to hold out – tyre supplier Pirelli is adding a mid-week run at Mugello, Italy from 1-3 May; the first time that in-season testing has been seen in Formula One since September 2008 (excluding last year’s Abu Dhabi young driver test). The manufacturer explains that the test will allow for greater understanding of the way the P Zero, and Cinturato if rain is forthcoming, tyres work, “accumulating more data” and allowing some of the team’s “third drivers to get time in a Formula One car on the current tyres.” This is the first mid-season test since Bridgestone completed a session in 2008, though pre-, and post-season sessions are common practice.

MotoGP adds Bridgestone wet tyre for soggy Spanish Saturday

Avintia Blusens’ rider Iván Silva put in a hot lap on slick tyres during a damp first practice session at Jerez to finish Friday on top of the timesheets. Conditions were neither fully wet nor dry during the first practice session and only eight riders chose to go out. Sporadic rain continued falling throughout the morning session and continued right until the start of FP2. The earlier downpour resulted in enough standing water on the circuit to necessitate wet tyres in FP2.

Bridgestone UK, Ireland retail networks brought “under one roof”

Bridgestone has detailed the new organisation of its retail network, bringing together its current UK and Ireland operations. As part of the company’s regionalisation strategy – essentially northern European operations being streamlined from the UK – the division is headed by Alex Watson, retail managing director UK and Ireland, who takes up responsibility for Kingsway Tyres Ltd, Fast Fit Tyres and also the First Stop network. He has been involved in Kingsway Tyres Ltd since 1996 and stayed with the company when it was bought by Bridgestone in 2004, becoming its managing director during the acquisition. There are 170 First Stop centres in the UK, and around 2,000 across Europe.
