Michelin releases passenger car tyre wear data

While talk of the new tyre labelling rules remains a hot topic, Michelin has released data showing that its products last the longest. Of course treadwear isn’t mentioned on the new label, but Michelin’s long-term survey of a FN50 fleet recorded every tyre change mileage on its vehicles over the last six years for its most popular car, the Ford Focus. Interestingly the company has also reported the results of leading premium competitors Bridgestone, Continental and Pirelli.

Bridgestone-shod “banger” completes “gruelling” Crumball Rally

Jon Powell has completed the epic Crumball Rally across Europe on a set of Bridgestone Turanza tyres, raising £2,000 for the Friends of Kennel Lane School in Berkshire, where his son is a pupil. Designed to be a low cost event, encouraging drivers to complete the course in a £200 ‘banger’, the Rally ran over three days from 10-12 May. In addition to supplying Powell with the rubber that would see him through the event, Bridgestone also made a £250 donation to his fund.

Bridgestone in Britain for Silverstone MotoGP race

Bridgestone will bring its soft and medium front slicks and medium-soft, medium (asymmetric) rear slicks to Britain as it looks to provide the high-speed stability and warm-up performance necessary for good tyre performance at Silverstone. The manufacturer and sole tyre supplier to the series says Silverstone’s speed and susceptibility to cold weather make it one of the most challenging circuits on the calendar in terms of tyre development. With rain a distinct possibility, the brand’s wet tyre soft (main) and hard (alternative) compounds may also come into play.

Bridgestone marks Bari plant’s half-century

Bridgestone recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Bari plant in Italy. The tyre maker held an open day for employees and more than 700 attendees, and festivities were attended by local management and Ryutaro Ishii, senior vice-president Manufacturing Bridgestone Europe. During the event, Bridgestone presented awards to long-serving employees and also celebrated 2.5 million work hours with “zero accidents” at the plant.

Michelin maintains top position in Japan winter tyre survey

For the ninth consecutive year, Michelin has topped the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2012 Japan Winter Tire Customer Satisfaction Index Study. Out of a possible 1,000 points, Michelin beat nine other brands with a score of 644, 30 points ahead of second-placed Bridgestone. The J.D. Power study was based on responses from 7,461 vehicle owners who purchased new winter tyres for their car between May 2009 and February 2012 and who are still using these tyres. The study was fielded in February 2012 and measured customer satisfaction with winter tyres by examining six key factors: tyre performance in snow-covered road conditions, performance in icy road conditions, durability/reliability, ride/quietness on dry or wet roads, handling/traction on dry or wet roads and appearance.

Lassa Phenoma centre stage at Reifen 2012

In total Lassa will be showcasing 18 different types of its tyres at the Essen show next week. Phenoma, the latest in Lassa’s ultra high performance summer tyre line up, will be in the spotlight at Lassa’s booth (3-225). Available in all Lassa’s export markets and in 11 popular sizes ranging from 16 to 18 inches in diameter, Phenoma is aimed at the sport and prestige segment. According to the company it has a 2.9m shorter braking distance, 5 per cent better wet handling and 2 per cent better dry handling than its competitors.

Biomass-based synthetic rubber developed by Bridgestone, Ajinomoto

Bridgestone Corporation has announced that, together with Ajinomoto Co., Inc, it has developed polymerised high-cis polyisoprene (IR), a synthetic rubber produced using bio-based isoprene, a substance produced from biomass raw materials using fermentation technology. The partners say they aim to commercialise this synthetic rubber for use in tyres and are proceeding with further research.

ATS-E wins major DSV trailer tyre deal

ATS Euromaster will service tyres fitted to global transport and logistics specialist DSV’s 7,000-strong European trailer fleet, having secured the major three year contract. ATS Euromaster’s team of mobile technicians will provide complete tyre maintenance, comprising routine tyre safety inspections and any follow-up service work, to up to 1,000 DSV trailers transiting through the UK every day. The company says it will be fitting “premium remould tyres”, supplied predominantly by Vacu-Lug and Encore, to the trailers, replacing a former Bridgestone policy.

Land Rover recently produced its one millionth Discovery vehicle and, to celebrate this milestone and demonstrate the Discovery's versatility and all-round capability, the company decide to send the vehicle on a trip – from Birmingham to Beijing.

For this epic, 50-day, 8,000-mile adventure, Land Rover chose Wrangler DuraTrac tyres for the three vehicles that undertook the daunting journey across more than a dozen countries. The conditions on the way were challenging and varied, including crossing mountains and driving on all sorts of surfaces.

Changeable UK weather calls for adaptable tyre: Bridgestone

Noting the changeable British climate in the month of May alone, Bridgestone UK has once again suggested the benefit of fitting its A001 Weather Control all season tyre. In recent months the unpredictable weather has left motorists battling vastly contrasting conditions in short periods of time. In extreme cases drivers have had to deal with weather ranging from heavy rain, sun, even hail and snow during the same journey. The last week’s hot weather replaced an unusually cold early May, with hail stones battering the Tyrepress.com office window in Stoke-on-Trent earlier in the month.

Bridgestone cautious about profit growth due to Europe crisis

Bridgestone executives have aired a degree of caution relating to the tyre major’s earnings outlook for this year. According to various news sources Bridgestone Corp.'s chief financial officer on suggested the impact of the euro-zone debt crisis is affecting demand, which in turn is weighing on its business.
